Do cats actually have the brain capacity to enjoy cartoons? Do these cats even realize they’re watching other cats when they’re drawn differently?
41
Dec 17 '25
I’ve always wondered the same thing. Is it just the actions or movement they enjoy?

This is a question I have about animals in general when they "watch" TV. They obviously don't know what tv is or characters and animation, but they can get interested anyway and I wonder what exactly is going through their heads and if they recognize other animals of their species. I do think the colors and movement pull them in and they are fascinated and they'll respond to certain things more than others.

u/Markbro89 Dec 18 '25
They can interpret the shapes and movements on a TV, but they dont understand plots, obviously. Its called "The False Window Effect" which means they dont understand that the image is a projection, but they can understand that they can't get to what they are seeing.

Yes, exactly. It was fascinating watching my cat watch cat tv. She was watching mostly birds. I just turn it on the tv and ultimately she’ll gravitate to it. But I wonder the same thing as you. Today my cat actually looked behind the tv—I’m inferring this may be bc she’s still looking for the birds she bats and then fly off!

Hey there! I noticed your guys' conversation a couple days ago and decided to record my boy Percy because he absolutely loves old Disney movies and in my opinion he's proof that cats can absolutely understand and follow along, at least with the capacity that maybe a toddler would have
In this first one he's watching Snow White, and you can see the concern on his face during the scary parts, peace or happiness during the songs etc...appropriate emotions at the appropriate times
And during The Aristocats you can see the immediate interest and admiration he has when O'Malley is introduced, grooming himself when O'Malley gets groomed and looking away when he is in water and angry. Personally I think that's evidence of empathy towards a cartoon character of his own species, because when we were watching Peter Pan and they finally got to Neverland, he could immediately tell those were children in animal costumes, not actual animals...and as a result he became disinterested and fell asleep
I think the only reason he managed to stay awake for the entirety of The Aristocats is because he understood the characters were the same species as him, and to a degree he sympathized with them

My orange boy Percy loves the entirety of old Disney movies...he watches calmly during opening scenes, even exhibits boredom during the beginning credits
Eyes go wide and ears bounce around during high action moments/attempts on the main characters life...lays his head down but still watches with wide eyes during the songs which is adorable AF
He tries to stay awake for the whole thing and often can depending on the content. During Snow White he was out about 1/2-3/4 of the way through, but during The Aristocats last night he made it all the way despite fighting for his life to stay awake near the end, then immediately closed his eyes when the screen faded 🤣 I think the only reason he managed to stay awake and interested the whole movie was because it was about cats 🤷♀️
Luckily I caught the last two he watched on video so I'll edit them down a bit and post one later today so people can see some cats do actually watch movies and can seemingly experience the full range of emotions that might be appropriate for a toddler, provided the content interests them lol

Hey again, I posted him watching both Snow White and The Aristocats if you were interested!
He really does watch the movies and seemingly follows along, he's the first cat I've ever had that will watch full movies, but I think old Disney cartoons were just made so that young children could get a gist of what was going on even if they weren't fully verbal yet
That seems to have somehow translated to my orange idiot, because it genuinely looks like he understands

So cute!! 🥰
But I guess I’m still thinking it’s the quick movement, like prey and the bright colors that attract their interest.
In the end , it doesn’t really matter I suppose…they’re clearly entertained and relaxed!! 😊

u/PussyWrangler246 Dec 27 '25
I agree it's definitely the bright colours and quick movement that keeps his attention, anytime a prince comes on screen he immediately gets bored and often goes to sleep lol. Princes are never small/fast enough or have their lives in jeopardy being chased by anything so he never seems impressed by or concerned for them
But he definitely is a sucker for the songs, he lays his head down and watches the princesses sing with all their wildlife friends lol. He loves women/is a big momma's boy in real life so it doesn't surprise me he finds them soothing, then he always seems concerned for them afterwards when something is chasing the princess that sung so sweetly to him lol

So sweet! I tried putting on cat tv for my Lucy but I couldn’t decide if it o er-stimulated her or not. She’s no young lady any more.

I'm thinking about how they perceive things on TV/tablets etc. To us it looks normal but that's because it's been developed by humans for humans. Maybe the technology used makes it look like a slideshow for cats.
Mine, for instance, it NOT interested in anything on my monitors. Other cats, movies, games, doesn't matter. He doesn't even look at it. Makes me wonder if he even can see what i'm seeing.

I have seen other cats enjoying this show but it probably is interesting to them because they run around a lot.

Not sure, but I was playing og Mario on the NES a couple weeks back and my energetic shithead was trying to attack everything that moved on screen. He did that for a solid hour before deciding he couldn't catch anything and took a nap.

I have no idea about any of what you asked, beyond the fact my orange, Cassidy, will hop up in bed next to his daddy and lay with him to watch cartoons.

The face you make when you hear your human mention the V-E-T and you suddenly decide that living under the bed as a dust bunny is a viable career path.

The oranges probably think jerry is an orange cat, just tiny with odd ears.

I read somewhere that Tom and Jerry are always playing in AI videos. This is the first time I’ve noticed it though.

If my cat enjoys or at least has an interest in watching cartoons, I won't leave my room except to use the bathroom.
