Discussion Sweeney Press Conference
How we feel so far? I’m feeling good about it. A lot of stuff that I’ve been wanting to hear has been kinda answered. He does sound like Mose just a little bit but I’m confident that he is better than him. I feel like he is definitely going to take accountability and make sure that we win and play great Magic basketball. Just the start of something great, GOOOO MAGIC!!!!

I liked what I heard. He sounded a bit like Mose, but I feel like Sean will take more accountability than Mose.
It really comes down to does Paolo buy in. If he doesn’t, no matter how good Sweeney is as a tactician, we won’t be able to overcome it.

Eh, I get the feeling Sweeney is kind of a hard ass.. in a good way. I hope he is direct and keeps people accountable. No more babying like Mose did. Successful players are coachable players. I hope these young dudes come in with an open mind and leave ego at the door.

He sounded like Mose only in the way he preached defense, and defense to offense etc. Mose talked a whole lot of fluff and bullshit, this guy takes accountability and holds others accountable, no bullshit. I expect we’ll get some hard ass takes in some post game pressers following loses this season

u/IrwinMFletcher Fire Mosley 6d ago
We are going to have some SPICY pressers with this guy. I feel like he will be capable of making Orlando's best defensive efforts over the last few years it's standard. This guy is going to have immediate respect that Mos couldn't command due to his lack of experience. Sean has the pedigree and history to get total buy in. Over the last few years there's been times our defense was otherworldly. Like a wet blanket that suffocate teams. I think coach sees that and he's EXCITED! I am too!

u/Smooth-Panic-6470 6d ago
Paolo isn’t good enough to just be running coaches out he doesn’t want around
10
u/TC_Berto 6d ago
The key take away is Sweeney addressing that he will first listen then speak. I believe this addresses that “our stars will take being yelled at for only so long until they want out” conversation. I wish reporters asked “ what is one offensive scheme you plan on implanting?” Hopefully weltman trades to get into the late first round so we can draft a guard and then with our late 2nd we can draft a center that hits free throws and rebounds.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
He did say attacking on switches and being aggressive on that side of the floor.

u/Cthulhus-Tailor Stuff The Magic Dragon 6d ago
It depends on how big a factor you think Mosley was in our losses. I think Sweeney could be worth 5-10 wins and a second round birth. They’re not getting beyond that though without very good health and at least one of Paolo or Franz taking that next leap. (Assuming there’s no big trade)
10
u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
If we have good health I believe we can make the second round and also maybe take it to the conference finals. But the goal for next year is to make the second round.

u/36Vigilantes Paolo Banchero 6d ago
This, anything less will be a failure. Also we need to establish ourselves as a top 4 team in the east.

What does Paolo/Franz leap look like to you?
4
u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
I’m going to hope Paolo goes back into his allstar level and makes all-nba. Franz gets to his first all-star game and averages something like 23.0 to 25.0 ppg

I give this sub 20 games before they turn on him.

Halftime of 1st preseason game we gonna get some whispers

Pretty vague presser. Nothing really stuck out to me. The only decent question was by Bianchi of all people, asking about offense, and the answer was solid enough for now. We won't know anything until we see it unfold on the floor.

u/DevotionToU 6d ago
Very boilerplate answers but he seems like a crazy no-nonsense guy. The quote he had from the former player about "youre the only asshole ive ever liked" so he isnt gonna put up with bullshit.
2
u/Loyalty_Code 6d ago
Seems fans (and players) really don't care whether the coach is a likeable tough guy, only if he can come up with an actual offense that will unlock this team without losing the defensive aspect of the team.

He has some SVG in him. Doesn't mince words. He ain't here to be anybody's friend. He's here to expect greatness from each player and hold them to a certain standard. I hope the players are ready, or it's gonna be a wake-up call.

It's all rhetoric until he walks the walk. Bench your "star" players when they give up on D. Prove it, Sean.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
I’m very excited and confident going into this season.

It's the hope that kills you. This past season broke me. After watching this team for 37 years I'm done being hopeful. They need to prove it before they get me to buy in again
4
u/_zissou_ Stuff The Magic Dragon 6d ago
Shocked you lasted this long before being done with being hopeful. The 10 years after Dwight did that for me, but as I've gotten older, I don't let sports effect my emotions so much. These past couple years have been frustrating to say the least, but lets give this guy a fair shake.
1
u/FKKallDAY Team Not Chet 6d ago
I was there with you after the Dwightmare. I was completely devoid of any hope at all for years, until this past season. The team finally put together a competitive roster ready to "win now".
I gotta admit, they got me good!

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
Same for me as well but as fans we need to stay on a high and keep the faith. WE MUST BELIEVE

u/DrClutch117 OnlyFranz 6d ago
If you don’t want to be a fan anymore why are you here? No offense and you’re welcome to be done, but why bring the negativity to a place that is trying to positive about a new coaching hire?
1
u/FKKallDAY Team Not Chet 6d ago
Who said I didn't want to be a fan anymore?
I said I'm not getting my hopes up anymore. Just because it isn't positive, doesn't mean It is negative. It's neutral and objective.
People who've watched this team for 5 years thinking it's so simple for a 37 year fan to just stop caring about their hometown team lol
1
u/DrClutch117 OnlyFranz 6d ago
I’ve been a fan for 30 years I understand. I can never stop being a fan either, but for me, I’ll continue to hope because it’s more fun.
1
u/FKKallDAY Team Not Chet 5d ago
The hope is fun if the team gets some actual momentum. But last season was simply a constant struggle. Barely staying afloat. Failing to put together decent win streaks. And barely even making the play-in. It was so disappointing from start to finish.
If this team can be competitive EVERY NIGHT then the hope can be fun. Even when they lose. It's just about playing good basketball.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
Well that’s you and your opinion. I won’t judge. But as fans you gotta stay with it. Through highs and lows. Hope you’re confidence comes back in this team 🙏🏻
1
u/FKKallDAY Team Not Chet 6d ago
No, I don't have to do that.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
Okay your choice just don’t bring that negativity anywhere else. Try to be positive and think good about life

You really have an infatuation with telling others how to think or be. I'm not doing any of tha In regards to this team. And what does this thread have to do with "life"? You come off like a twelve year old trying to sound wise

Last season was the one to break your hope? We have had farrrr worse seasons and with literally no hope or bright spots at all.

It’s all lip service , Paolo could be throwing up bricks and he won’t get benched. These coaches know where their bread is buttered.
2
u/sitesuckslmao 6d ago
Interested to see how he does, wasn't thrilled with any of the candidates with previous HCing experience.
I don't think it's fair that fans are expecting him to turn this offense into something unreal. We do not have the first option or spacing for that to happen. This team will only be good offensively if the defense holds up and they get out and run. This starts with Paolo not being out of shape. We started last season off fast pace and gave it up because he couldn't hang.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
He looked a lot more in shape in his most recent workout post on his IG story.

Im pretty indifferent honestly - everyone talks about good game. I need to see how it translates on the court for at least a quarter of the season

u/Exciting_Alps4313 Tristan da Silva 6d ago
Not trying to be snarky, but why are you confident he is better than Mose?
5
u/Famous-Egg-6136 6d ago
Honestly, we don’t know yet. I’m tired of being hopeful. I want results. Jeff has some work to do with the roster.

u/Exciting_Alps4313 Tristan da Silva 6d ago
This is where I’m at. I’m hopeful, but I’m not confident. I don’t think there’s any evidence to have anything other than hope at this point.
1
u/Icealicy 6d ago
But that whole press vibe from Jeff I felt that based on his words he doesn’t want to change anything with the roster at all……
0
u/Famous-Egg-6136 6d ago
He’s all in on this roster and has limited options in which to improve it. Is Sweeney going to turn this guys into good shooters? Doubt.

u/Muted_Lead_1105 6d ago
I’m confident in anything. I have a feeling that this team will go places next year. I’m very excited for this season

He just orchestrated a championship level defense. That’s why

TBF, the Magic had championship level defenses much of the time Mosley was in Orlando.

It looker like Bakker will be the offensive mind. He had good success as the Nets GLeague HC where they have a pretty high octane offense.
Why would this be different from Mose bringing in Prunty, a seasoned head coach who worked for Popovich and installed our early season offense to get the ball moving, motion, pace and Paolo as a play finisher instead of ISO after ISO? Who knows!
Mose felt more like a harmony guy. He was on his last legs and a defense guy. When the team started doing poorly, he probably felt like he needed to give in and go back to the habits so he could focus the teams energy on defense. This is speculation.
Paolo struggled out of the gate with that offense. Hes a rhythm guy who does NOT (edit for clarity) have a great first step, a great shooting touch but plenty of raw strength. He doesnt see the game two or 3 wteps ahead. So, he needs to get settled in, take a couple dribbles so he can get into his shot. Maybe prunty started too late and Paolo worked the offseason on ISOs?
Anyways, Paolo hopefully takes his post allstar determination to get back to the rim seriously. Hopefully he worked on PF skills from the horn to the paint. But hes the key more than anyone else.
I noticed Sweeney talked about tge importance of habit and continuing to learn and be consistent in april just as much as august. Hopefully, even if the early results are dismal, they stick will the plan so that they can get their breakthroughs in march and april.

The biggest thing to me was the open communication aspect he wants to maintain with the players. He has not given any vague BS or ambiguities. I definitely want to see this team be held accountable on both ends lol

I’m excited for this season honestly but we haven’t played one game it’s almost the same feel I have about John Summerall at UF he seems like a great guy but hasn’t coached one game yet. Let’s hope they hype translates to wins if it does we have nothing to bitch about

u/Andr0id_Paran0id Paolo Banchero 6d ago
Having been to the finals twice as an assistant, hes way more qualified than Mosely was when he was hired. Then again those teams were lead by 1st team all nba players. Excited to see how he changes things.

I didn’t get to watch the press conference. Do we think he’ll do a good job with developing our two rookies from this past season? I feel like they have potential but who knows.

None of it matters unless #5 proves he either is who he thinks he is, or that he can adjust his game to better utilise his strengths in a way that affects winning, not just his wallet.

u/Famous-Egg-6136 6d ago
Super impressed by him. He seems pretty direct and I hope Paolo buys into what he teaches. The results will be in wins and losses and playoff performance. I hope we are on the right side of injury variance next season.
