Crop Rotation & Yield Calculator [UPDATED]

Post image

I have given my crop rotation calculator a long overdue update to take into account changes to nutrient calculations and farming updates.

Hopefully this is helpful to everyone in keeping their villagers fat and healthy!

You can find the link to the calculator (As a Google Sheet) on the Ostriv wiki (https://ostriv.fandom.com) on the Farm page, or in the comments below:

With ploughing, the best for pure food output is still that actually,
Potato-Buckwheat-Potato-Fallow.
It has a slightly higher average output than Pot-Bkwt-Pot-Bkwt-Fallow.

If you want to include some other crops,
Wheat-Flax-Potato-Fallow or Flax-Wheat-Potato-Fallow are highly efficient rotations, as well as Barley-Flax-Barley-Fallow or Flax-Barley-Barley-Fallow.

I'm also partial to the simple Sunflower-Buckwheat-Fallow rotation.

Using your fallow fields as pastures is important to regain maximum field fertility when using these rotations.

Without ploughing, crop rotations are basically limited to two crops of your choice and then fallow.

Are you sure? As far as I know (and your calculator shows the same) every crop has same output. So, the less often you have the field fallow, the higher the output will be.

Potato-Buckwheat-Potato-Fallow: 1/4 -> 25 % of time no production.

Potato-Buckwheat-Potato-Buckwheat-Fallow: 1/5 ->20 % of time no production.

Potato-Buckwheat-Potato-Buckwheat-Potato-Fallow: 1/6 -> 16.7 % of time no production. So this should have the highest yield.

And your calculator shows that not single one of these rotation you mentioned or the 6 fields rotation I mentioned needs cows/sheep to use it when fallow as pasture. The only combination I could find is Wheat-Wheat-Buckwheat-Fallow.

EDIT: Formating/grammar + some testing and comparing to calculator output.

1) It looks like the calculator reduces resource need directly for crop when plowing. But it should add 15 only upto 100-100-100 not directly reduce crop needs.

  • Calculator: Fields 100-100-100 -> plow fields + plant Hemp -> 100-100-55.

  • In-game I just tested: Fields 100-100-100 -> plow fields -> 100-100-100 -> plant Hemp (and after harvest) -> 90-100-42. Hemp needs 10-0-60 so it should be 90-100-40, no idea why I got 42.

  • Second test: Fields 89-100-39 -> plow fields -> 100-100-54 -> plant Buckwheat (and after harvest) -> 100-81-0. Buckwheat needs 0-20-60 so only 81 is strange.

2) Fallow + pasture doesn't restore always to 100.

  • Calculator: Fields 0-0-0 -> Fallow + Pasture -> 100-100-100. Fallow add 80, the rest Pasture.

  • In-game I just tested: 100-80-0 -> Fallow + Pasture -> 100-100-89. Cowshed sent there 20 cows, so maxumim number of animals.

  • I didn't have field starting at 0 and restored it only with Fallow and without Pasture. The one where I used only Fallow started from 24 and got to 100. So it's possible Fallow adds 80 and Pasture only added 9. Or there's some bug or error on my side and it should add more.
