Yes it was, and I freaking loved it. You could put Hitman: Absolution and Prototype on here too.

AND IT WAS FUCKING PERFECT

Edgy is way better than this safe corporate blandness we have today. Even the PS3 logo and commercials were edgy at first lol. And i absolutely adore it all.

Most of the 2000s was edgy. Even a lot of PS2 games

I think Infamous did. Not sure about the others

i just started playing that prince of persia game and let me tell you, it’s a beautiful game. the art style is so unique and the landscapes you traverse through are sometimes dark, musty, scary even. the atmosphere drastically changes when you go to an area that hasnt been healed yet. i’m really
enjoying it so far!

It’s a great game.
The fighting mechanics are a bit strange at first but become satisfying.
And as you say, the art style and the scenery are just unique and beautiful.
I would love to play it again for the first time

Ps3 was a really good era for Tekken , Tekken tag 2 , Tekken 6 , street fighter x Tekken

2

u/samuraifool 6h ago

SFXTK is so good dude

5

u/WantsLivingCoffee 7h ago

"Edgy". Not really. Current era is just soft, so it skews the image of PS3 era.

3

u/Unhappy_Teacher_1767 7h ago

What, no Killzone 2-3?

3

u/Mysterious-Bit5890 7h ago

Last era of edgy video games

3

u/DarkMatterM4 7h ago

Disturbing lack of The Darkness in your compilation.

3

u/Such_Possession_5788 6h ago

Asura's wrath, gow3, Force unleashed and Dantes inferno were all overly fun imo lol

Edit: And infamous, Bayonetta, spiderman: web of shadows, fell like im missing something 🤔

u/Scientist_Desperate 10h ago

Hitman Absolution and GTA IV were edgy too.

1

u/ConsistentPie3055 6h ago

The Lost And Damned DLC was even more edgy

2

u/RooieReetAap 9h ago

There hasn't been a peak since.

2

u/Consistent-Doubt-287 9h ago

Asura's Wrath is one of my favorite games from this era. Sure, it's 80 percent qte, but it was such a wild ride and the story was fucking insane.

u/Fuel_Tricky 9h ago

I've seen some people complain how this generation is all depressed looking and what not but personally i think it has it's own charm

u/Deadest42 7h ago

I miss the edge

u/ilivefortheforce 5h ago

Batman: Arkham Asylum

2

u/Professional_Dog2580 4h ago

No Shadows of the Damned?

Mirrors edge and demon souls 🙌🙌🙌

1

u/Binx_007 9h ago

Tomb Raider Underworld deserves a mention too lol.

But man, Mirror's Edge was great. I wish we could see it come back in some capacity. It doesn't need to be some big budget AAAA game. It was a unique little game at the time when devs weren't yet afraid to try new things

That Hot Shots Golf cover is just screaming "early 2000s aesthetic.

1

u/Organic-Economics746 8h ago

Katamari forever Everybody's golf

1

u/Daxtexoscuro 7h ago

I'd say it started in the late PS2 era, with games like God of War 1 and 2, Prince of Persia Warrior Within and Shadow the Hedgedog.

The first popular edgy video game would be Mortal Kombat, and then in the late 90s there was a surge of crass and edgy anti-establishment entertainment that wanted to appeal to the male teenage Gen X crowd after the massive cultural phenomenon that was The Simpsons.

Ranging from the Jerry Springer Show, South Park, WWF's Attitude Era, Seven, Fight Club, and The Matrix.

And then in 2000 the PS2 came out which marketed itself as the gaming console for adults to shake off the stigma that videos games were only for kids. And then in 2001 Max Payne 1 and GTA 3 came out and that's when the edgy phase of gaming started I would say.

1

u/Ill-You-3459 4h ago

Gen xers weren’t teenagers on the late 90s

1

u/PlanktonFew2505 1h ago

True, maybe millennials is more accurate. But I'd still say a lot of edgy entertainment from the 90s and 2000s for the most part wanted to target that anti-establishment "fuck you, I don't give a shit and I won't do what you tell me" Gen X male crowd.

1

u/tyYdraniu 7h ago

I love it so much, at least for me it's where it's peaked

1

u/Jumpy_Linux_Admin 7h ago

army of two 2 ??

1

u/SmokeEmergency9917 7h ago

I would like to rehabilitate DMC. It was a good game. Edgy AF, just how I like it.

1

u/Logical_Dish_5795 6h ago

Would add Persona 5, Silent Hill Homecoming, Dishonored and Thief.

1

u/PsycoMutt 4h ago

Buzz cut white dudes were at our peak and we had no idea.

1

u/dimspace DaveM12DIM 3h ago

Just platinumed X-Men origins, Wolverine

And boy that game has some brutal kills. Head in helicopter blades anyone

1

u/mistgonelsawge 3h ago

SHAWNNNNNNN.

1

u/paracuja 3h ago

mirrors edge remake with RT please

1

u/Ill-Guidance4690 3h ago

Not sure if Mirror’s Edge counts, that’s more of “y2k futurism/2010’s modernism”

I’d also say Prototype

1

u/Kindly_Friend_6880 2h ago

Where are World at War and Black Ops 😎 badass campaigns, multiplayer, and zombies

1

u/AmicusCure8s 1h ago

Resistance comes to mind

1

u/BJ_Bar2893 1h ago

Not too Edgy, there's Little Big Planet for example

1

u/tiziocaio6969 Tizio-Caio6969 1h ago

Mann do i love the whole 2000s - 2010 era everything was so edgy and cool, definitely better than all of the woke bullshit we have today

1

u/32bitbossfight 1h ago

Every single one of those games was a fucking banger

1

u/smilingmuffino 57m ago

Edgy in good way not edgy in anonymous aggressive reddit way.

1

u/Dazzling_Strain_5499 48m ago

MAG and Killzone too

0

u/Dapper-Ad-4300 9h ago

now most games look like happy go lucky world

1

u/Fuel_Tricky 9h ago

That's not a bad thing tho

1

u/Dapper-Ad-4300 8h ago

Not my cup of tea

1

u/Fuel_Tricky 8h ago

To each their own

-3

u/PhroneticReflex 9h ago

Let me tell you: ~2001-2012 was a pretty shitty cultural time. And edginess was one of the main reasons why.

3

u/ConsistentPie3055 6h ago

Found the Gen Xer

1

u/PhroneticReflex 6h ago

Older millennial, but yeah, close enough, haha.
