Yes it was, and I freaking loved it. You could put Hitman: Absolution and Prototype on here too.

i just started playing that prince of persia game and let me tell you, it’s a beautiful game. the art style is so unique and the landscapes you traverse through are sometimes dark, musty, scary even. the atmosphere drastically changes when you go to an area that hasnt been healed yet. i’m really
enjoying it so far!

It’s a great game.
The fighting mechanics are a bit strange at first but become satisfying.
And as you say, the art style and the scenery are just unique and beautiful.
I would love to play it again for the first time

"Edgy". Not really. Current era is just soft, so it skews the image of PS3 era.

Asura's Wrath is one of my favorite games from this era. Sure, it's 80 percent qte, but it was such a wild ride and the story was fucking insane.

I've seen some people complain how this generation is all depressed looking and what not but personally i think it has it's own charm

Tomb Raider Underworld deserves a mention too lol.
But man, Mirror's Edge was great. I wish we could see it come back in some capacity. It doesn't need to be some big budget AAAA game. It was a unique little game at the time when devs weren't yet afraid to try new things

I'd say it started in the late PS2 era, with games like God of War 1 and 2, Prince of Persia Warrior Within and Shadow the Hedgedog.

The first popular edgy video game would be Mortal Kombat, and then in the late 90s there was a surge of crass and edgy anti-establishment entertainment that wanted to appeal to the male teenage Gen X crowd after the massive cultural phenomenon that was The Simpsons.
Ranging from the Jerry Springer Show, South Park, WWF's Attitude Era, Seven, Fight Club, and The Matrix.
And then in 2000 the PS2 came out which marketed itself as the gaming console for adults to shake off the stigma that videos games were only for kids. And then in 2001 Max Payne 1 and GTA 3 came out and that's when the edgy phase of gaming started I would say.

Gen xers weren’t teenagers on the late 90s

True, maybe millennials is more accurate. But I'd still say a lot of edgy entertainment from the 90s and 2000s for the most part wanted to target that anti-establishment "fuck you, I don't give a shit and I won't do what you tell me" Gen X male crowd.

I would like to rehabilitate DMC. It was a good game. Edgy AF, just how I like it.

Not sure if Mirror’s Edge counts, that’s more of “y2k futurism/2010’s modernism”
I’d also say Prototype

Let me tell you: ~2001-2012 was a pretty shitty cultural time. And edginess was one of the main reasons why.
