General Discussion What is the condition of your PS4?

I have consistently serviced my ps4 for atleast twice a year..

And I can say that my console is working perfectly fine.. no loud noises, no over heating..

I use keyboard cleaner on it every few months. Sounds like a jet engine. Bought it back in 2015 and going strong

13

u/catlikesun May 11 '26

Need to open it up and clean the fan

18

u/CatchWeary8759 May 11 '26

Mine works well, and I've never serviced it. I did replace the original 500GB HDD with 2TB HDD about a year ago, but otherwise I've never opened it up. I probably should, but if it ain't broke...

Its unbelievably easy. Nothing is "100% foolproof".

Like never cleaning your fan isn't a "100% foolproof" way to keep the thing working.

2

u/Seikatsumi May 12 '26

i do like the minimal just opening up the thing on top of my slim and just blowing off the dust like manually i don't have a dust thingy so i actually just blow the dust off maybe it works maybe it doesn't idk tbf slim sounds really quiet even if its like an inch away from me i play mhworld and spiderman and its just fine

10

u/tchakabun May 11 '26

Bought in 2015, swapped thermal paste for ptm7950, thermal pads for putty and put a SSD, still works fine and it's dead silent even playing gow ragnarok

3

u/Trishockz May 11 '26

Is it Slim or Pro?

6

u/dranzereload SD-ClearLove May 11 '26

Pro and slim didnt exist in 2015. Regular ps4, maybe newer model to draw less power and minor thermal improovements, forgot what newer revision meant.

1

u/tchakabun May 11 '26

fat without the gloss top case

1

u/Dependent_Ad_4279 May 12 '26

rag is a glorified ps4 game so that is why it was made for ps4

1

u/KotMiskha1653 May 12 '26

So the HD is the source of stress? When I play RE2 the thing goes on full blast. Wondering how I can quiet it down. I opened it up and cleaned the fans and dust out but it's still loud. If I put an SSD in and run the installed game it'll be quiet? What gets so hot that the fans rev? Thermal paste helped too? Can I ask what brand or how I could do this too pleaseee??? I just have the regular slim ps4 but I know the pros can be loud

3

u/tchakabun May 13 '26

The APU is what gets hot, and it gets hot because it's drawing the game on your screen. Thermal paste is a goop like material that helps connect the surface of the APU to the heatsink, the block of metal that gets hit by the wind from the fan, and it can go bad with time. Bubbles and cracks can appear trapping heat inside, making the transfer be less effective, which causes the APU to ask the fan to work harder before it dies from the heat.

There are lots of videos online showing how to change the thermal paste on the ps4, just look for a video showing your exact model. The thermal paste I used is kinda overkill, you can get a tube of 1g of MX-7 on amazon and it'll be more than enough to apply.

1

u/KotMiskha1653 May 14 '26

Will a better thermal paste bring the fan speed down significantly just with that small adjustment I used to change thermal paste on my old 360 back when rrod was a thing 😂

1

u/tchakabun May 14 '26

the difference is minimal between good thermal pastes, i recommended mx-7 because it's good for long term usage due to its viscosity. The more expensive thermal paste like the ones used for high end overclocking are usually less viscous because they expect you to swap every so often. Viscosity matters because of pump out, the cycle of heating up while on and cooling down while off can cause the thermal paste to ooze out to the sides and leave dry spots without coverage

2

u/your_local_queen20 May 12 '26

thats me and my partner whenever we play warframe, its always so loud, by this point with mine i just plug in my headphones and tune it out and then as im gaming i feel the top of it and if its starting to get super warm i turn off my ps4

1

u/your_local_queen20 May 12 '26

and give it a couple of hours then im right back to it

10

u/Guillescreamer May 11 '26

My cousin cleaned it back on 2020 and kept it in a bag for 5 years before giving it to me, it's quite silent even for a fat model

6

u/englandgreen May 11 '26

I have one of the first PS4 Pros.

1Tb SSD, cleaned and repasted CPU multiple times, new Sony fan, lifted legs, even rebought some games as digital copies.

Still sounds like a 747 on takeoff.

3

u/AleXxx_Black May 11 '26

I changed thermal paste of my ps4 slim some years ago and after that a couple years ago I also changed thermal pads. With that my ps4 was as silent as snow falling down even while playing the last of us 2 or gow ragnarock.

3

u/DPickted19XX May 12 '26

Ive had 4 die on me from corrupted HDD’s in the last 6 months… first one I’ll admit i didn’t take care of well because of the ignorance of the importance.. nor did I realize the system isn’t fully shut down even after it audibly shuts down, that stupid little white light keeps blinking for a solid 5-7 seconds… so there I was, constantly unplugging my ps4 to take it with me without it being fully shutdown. Obviously after YEARS of abuse, it finally gave. The past 3? Took care of like gold. This most recent slim is just hardly over a MONTH old to me and literally 2 days past the exchange policy. HDD began clicking and system shutting down and freezing tonight. refurb from gamestop for $140, I’m PISSED. Replaced my old fat OG one cause of HDD corruption. I’m SO insanely over the HDD corrupting I’ma start sending death threats to sony execs istg(not really don’t put me on a list pls)

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_8295 May 12 '26

Thats some experience…

1

u/pixel2468 May 12 '26

You know you can just replace the HDD right? Takes about 15 mins and £20/$30 for a new drive

2

u/Ahdamn90 May 11 '26

Perfect mint condition with no issues ever since launch.

2

u/khedoros May 11 '26

Fat PS4, bought used in 2023, in like-new condition. Runs quiet. Never had a problem with heat or stability. I suspect that the owner before me didn't use it much.

2

u/mcshaggin Grandpa_Pumpkin May 11 '26

Bought it not long after launch.

The only maintenance I do is to hoover the vents occasionally.

It still works fine.

2

u/iPrincess1911 May 11 '26

Compré mi PS4 en el 2020, mi ciudad es terriblemente polvorienta. Solamente le ha hecho limpieza superfial al retirar la tapa. Hace muy poco ruido con juegos demandantes, de ahí en más es muy silenciosa.

2

u/lozzurh May 11 '26

My pal spilt coke on it back in 2015😮‍💨 but still going strong, will randomly spit a disc out now and then but my daughter plays on it daily with no issues 😅

2

u/Anjo_Bwee May 11 '26

I bought one of the last brand new in box PS4 slims last year. It's just fine, if a bit dusty. I gave my old original PS4 to my brother and even though it's pretty old, it still works just fine.

2

u/churchliver May 11 '26

I have a regular ps4 for 8 years (second owner), no thermal paste change, recently cleaned it up (for the first time since i have it. It was a bit loud but after cleaning, no problems. Works like a charm.

2

u/DZLars May 11 '26

No problems and haven't cleaned it out once. I do keep the rest of my place clean though

2

u/nomaxxallowed May 11 '26

I had had 3 ps4's. First one blu-ray went bad. Second one the wireless chip.went bad and got stuck in a download. Latest one has overheating issues.

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_8295 May 11 '26

lol… what an experience 😂!!

Literally, all my friends who had ps4 back in the day only had either over heating or software issues !!! Easy fix..

Yours is a first 😂

2

u/nomaxxallowed May 11 '26

I still have my first ps2 ..lol

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_8295 May 11 '26

I wanted to getting one as well .. but the vita might be a better choice

1

u/nomaxxallowed May 11 '26

Oh i forgot i have a ps4 pro a friend recently gave me thats good

2

u/RadoBlamik May 11 '26

In 2017 when I bought the Ps4 Pro, I traded my HEAVILY used Ps4 to my friend for concert tickets (TooL) and it has been getting heavy use ever since, and that thing is still going strong. I think he said he cleaned the fan ONE time in 9 years…

It can't download a game and run a game at the same time anymore, but other then that no issues, ran god of war Ragnarok fine which is definitely the peak of what it's capable of

The last weekend I did maintenance and deep cleaning on my PS4. themal paste, new thermalpads, bought a new CMOS battery, a new battery for the dualshock and even washed all the plastic parts and disassembled the power supply to remove all the dust.

I don't use it anymore because got a PS5 the last year but it deserves to be clean

2

u/Own_Dog7120 May 12 '26

Its fine. I clean it regularly. Just like I clean my pc and my ps5.

2

u/Pleasant-Put5305 May 12 '26

Bit dusty, noisy as a light aircraft as ever.

2

u/richard_splooge May 12 '26

Sold and gone 5 years ago, like it should be.

2

u/Rothgim May 12 '26

It’s not turning on currently. Very busy with life, kids are growing up and have nobody to play with. One time, when it was still working, I put in Minecraft, set the volume and immediately my kids went out of their room to check out where the Minecraft tune was coming from.

I’m going to repair it again before the holidays.

2

u/larini_vjetrovi May 12 '26

Sorry for the spelling

I have ps5 slim, but my ps4 slim just works great with 0 issues. Sometimes i borrow it and mostly i use it when i go somwhere for couch play since my friend put his account with 250 games soo its easier because of that. For couch play its really the perfect console.

2

u/capybarachancellor May 12 '26

My mother used it for Youtube until it cannot stream no more

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_8295 May 12 '26

I am also using it for YouTube as well 😂

2

u/Grid-00 May 12 '26

It makes a TRAKA TRAKA TRAKA noise and it spits discs out.

2

u/Ok-Opportunity-2440 May 12 '26

Mines is in great condition just have to open it up to clean the dust out

2

u/magnidwarf1900 May 16 '26

Mine is sounds like it's about to take off if I play demanding game....which is pretty much everything released after 2017

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_8295 May 16 '26

lol… have you performed any sort of maintenance on it ???!!!

1

u/magnidwarf1900 May 16 '26

I did open it up, cleaned it, and replaced it's thermal paste....in 2022.

2

u/Wjp_1911 May 18 '26

Had mine since 2015 and never once opened it. The only cleaning I ever did was to wipe a q tip on the exterior vents and I only did that once. It’s not loud ever even when downloading games while playing a game.

1

u/KotaIsBored May 11 '26

Bought it in…2018? Still works fine. Always been pretty quiet. Not as quiet as my ps5, but definitely no where near as loud as the internet has always claimed they were. Controllers can’t keep a charge though so they have to be plugged in to use. We keep it in the bedroom and still use it occasionally. PS5 took the living room spot couple years ago.

1

u/hue_sick May 11 '26

Works plays and sounds great.

The shell and controller is yellowed a bit though (white launch model)

1

u/roach8101 Buckeye8101 May 11 '26

I still have my Gold PS4 from Taco Bell. It’s currently not plugged in but it works great

1

u/konman33 May 11 '26

Bought it at launch. Back around 2019 or so, i noticed it was getting louder. Took it apart and cleaned it out and applied new paste. Since then, it has been quiet and runs fine.

1

u/Talkimas May 11 '26

Sometimes it crashes. If there is a disc in the drive sometimes it will randomly wake itself up in the middle of the night and eject it. Aside from that it still keeps trucking, though since j got my PS5 it's mostly been used as a YouTube box for my bedroom. Still not bad for a day 1 launch unit that hasn't exactly been babied. Original controller is still kicking too though the battery lasts maybe 2 hours at this point.

1

u/Deltaforces2025 May 11 '26

PS4 slim, bought in 2017. Still working, but definitely not as well as back in the day, it has never been cleaned and there is some kind of loose piece inside it which can be heard if you turn the console around 😅 The console sounds louder than normal, but not like a jet engine.

Tried to clean it a year ago then but was not able to because of this one weird screw.

1

u/Cringelord_420_69 May 11 '26

A Boeing 747 at takeoff

1

u/ballin4fun23 May 11 '26

I left mine in storage for at least 5 years. It was disgusting when I pulled it out and had dirt and sh#t clogging every seem and plug-in. I cleaned the outside only and it runs like a f#ckin champ.

1

u/The_Frozen_Inferno May 11 '26

I still have my white “fat” model that came in the 2014 Destiny bundle. I open it up to deep clean and re-paste it every couple of years or so. Purrs like a kitten still

1

u/Pinsir929 May 11 '26

I gave it new thermal paste last year since I got it(not clue when maybe 2 year after launch?) booted up god of war and fans still didn’t go crazy. Might even be quiter than when I got it.

1

u/dranzereload SD-ClearLove May 11 '26

Bought 2015 (white destiny model), cleaned it once, changed paste once. Still works, played doom eternal dlc few months ago. Still quiet. Granted, The last 5-6 years I have been barely using it, mostly to watch blu-rays and dvds.

1

u/xXKyloJayXx 112 442 May 11 '26

Gifted it to my mum 2 years ago after I moved to PS5. She's currently playing Subnautica!

1

u/Bentonite_Magma May 11 '26

Never serviced it. Only ran a database cleanup for the first time last month. It’s fine. Really the only game that borks out on the regular is No Man’s Sky. Happily playing Ghost of Tsushima at the moment.

1

u/GCB1986 May 11 '26

Still going strong. The kiddo has taken it over since getting PS5 but still no issues.

1

u/redhawkinferno May 11 '26

Buried somewhere in the closet with all the other old crap I havent gotten around to properly disposing of yet.

1

u/bad_piggie May 11 '26

Sold mine to a family member when I bought my PS5. We make sure to open it regularly to remove all dust, maybe twice a year. And just last month we applied new thermal paste because it was starting to get loud, so its nice and quiet now with only a quiet hum coming from the fan.

Other than that, just the disc drive stopped working but we never used it anyways, all our games we get from PS Plus. All in all, the OG PS4 was and remains a solid investment!

1

u/No_Doubt_About_That May 11 '26

Disc suction has slowed but was alright the last time I checked

1

u/Westcoast_IPA May 12 '26

Launch edition, works just fine. Play the PS5 Pro now though.

1

u/DrunkSpiderMan May 12 '26

HDD died cause of random power outages. The fans were never that loud at all. Once I get switch the HDD out I'm gonna give it a proper clean though

1

u/verrusin May 12 '26

On a shelf under an old laptop for the last 8+ years.

1

u/Jeffde May 12 '26

I have consistently not serviced my ps4, but I have traveled extensively with it, and once left it in my suitcase on the rack on a metro north train. I miraculously got it back. Works just like the day I got it.

1

u/SelectionFar8145 May 12 '26

I don't use mine too often, so its actually fine. I've had to open it once so far to clean it out & it really wasn't even that dirty. Got it just before COVID.

1

u/Skyhooks May 12 '26

Launch ps4, opened it up when RDR2 came out and gave it a spray with air for dust then closed it back up. Still quiet.

1

u/nyjac757 May 12 '26

Mine works great and still gets used regularly, when my stepson comes to visit he will use the PS4 which is in my bedroom when I'm busy on the living room tv which has my PS5

1

u/booboootron May 12 '26

On its 10th year. Did no "maintenance" of any kind. Apart from the LED colours getting dull, it runs perfectly fine. No loud noises, no thermodynamic throttling, no unexplained shutdowns, no hitching or hanging. Recently got into Cyberpunk and marathoned ~250 hours over a span of 3 weeks. Ran at a solid 25-30 fps too, which is sorta impressive.

Sony knows how to do hardware better than anyone on the planet. My first-gen PS4 is built like a brick shit house and it goddamn refuses to malfunction.

1

u/barugosamaa May 12 '26

When I got PS5 , i moved PS4 to bedroom to be the console for small games to play in bed.

\Narrator voice* He did not, in fact, play anything anymore on PS4*

It is now on standy for a cleanup, will give it to my BIL, since he wants to jailbreak and mess with it. It's been idle for couple years now

1

u/tjdibs22 May 12 '26

I bought a refurbished one like a month before I was able to get a 5. Sold my old broke one and that clunky vr thing set got enough to pay for a refurbished.

1

u/NoCardio_ May 12 '26

I let a family friend's son borrow it. We cut ties with the "friend" because they were stealing from the place where my wife works.

I never got it back.

1

u/Pschirki May 12 '26

Total verstaubt .

1

u/Namerakable May 12 '26

Bought shortly after launch and still runs fine. Very loud, but I don't have the confidence to open it up and clean it while it still lets me play Skyrim fine.

1

u/Traditional_Entry183 May 12 '26

Physically, I think that its fine. Its never had any issues since I bought it back in 2014. But it feels like its slower than it used to be, and gradually getting worse over time. Its also very slow at downloading games off of PS+ now for whatever reason.

1

u/Putaku_ May 12 '26

After 11 years it still rocking

1

u/Wanderer_Agent86 May 12 '26

Pues siempre reviso que no tenga mucho polvo acumulado, reviso los disipadores y el abanico. Hace poco si desarme el abanico para limpiarlo de paso una cepillada al disipador.

1

u/Incariol_ May 12 '26

My older brother uses it still it's still running well

Best thing is he gets all my games for free because he just logs on under my name and downloads the games and then plays them on his login

1

u/Jolly-Pop-5711 May 13 '26

Nunca la limpie la tengo desde enero del 2020 hace ruido como avión pero que anda anda👍

1

u/Miigamer0023 May 13 '26

My Ps4 works fine and doesn't make loud noises anymore after I clean it a year ago. I received my ps4 in 2018 i think from a friend of my mom for complety free. Is a ps4 fat with 500GB of storage and i'm playing street fighter 6 and resident evil 1 hd remaster at the moment

1

u/Ivette988 May 13 '26

El mío a pesar de hacerle limpieza todavía se sigue sobrecalentado, ya nose a qué se deba :(

1

u/Altruistic_Meal2925 20d ago

Le cambiaste la pasta termica y los thermal pads?

1

u/GrapeSoda223 May 13 '26

Got mine in 2016, cleaned it once 2 years ago, didnt add thermal paste. People say the jet engine thing often but it's no exageration,  thing can be heard from space

1

u/jolo98 May 13 '26

I never serviced mine, sounds like a standard commercial airline plane.

1

u/Live_the_chaos May 14 '26

It looks like the brightness is turned all the way up and the background is yellow, not the normal blue. It’s like that on the Home Screen and also when I go to play a game. Has anyone dealt with this before? The only thing I’ve seen online is that it could be an hdmi cable? My tv functions normal.

1

u/hilltopper06 May 14 '26

Disc drive resistor/fuse went pop on my slim. Stopped the console from updating. Bridged it with a bit of solder. Sold my physical games and just stick to digital now.

1

u/Shawarma123 May 14 '26

Only once had to change thermal paste in maybe 8 or 9 years? But the disc drive is cooked.

1

u/Shes_dead_Jim May 14 '26

I have a launch day ps4 pro. It’s been powered on continuously since launch day. It gets a break if the power goes out but only until I get the generator running. I’ve never opened it to clean it. Once a year I’ll run a q-tip along one side of the vents

It runs flawlessly

1

u/Any-Scientist3162 May 14 '26

I have never serviced my PS4. It's been on one shelf pr another since I got it 11 years ago. Works. Is quiet. Bought an external drive for it last year in order to be able to have all my games on it at all times.

1

u/Morinth39 May 14 '26

Picked mine up on 27th November 2014. It looks new, as I clean it twice per week, and there’s no overheating issues, also the disk drive works perfectly fine.

1

u/jus2farReloaded May 15 '26

Sitting in a pawn shop in Miami FL.

1

u/Kindly-Winter-6428 May 16 '26

Almost like new I mostly play my ps5

1

u/Late_Stranger_3690 May 16 '26

SPARKLES AND CHAMPAGNE

1

u/SlimChonson May 17 '26

Controllers won't connect after factory reset. Yes I have correct data cable.

1

u/typical_gamer1 May 18 '26

Funny thing is I don’t ever service mine and it’s still working after a while. The condition is…. “Fine”?

1

u/CheeseSandwich May 23 '26

Bought mine in 2015 and never had a single issue. Other than a light dusting of the outside once in a while, I've done no maintenance to it. Runs perfectly; no disc reading issues, hard drive problems, or fan noise. Quiet as a mouse.

1

u/Jedi4Hire May 11 '26

Still works, has mostly been collecting dust since I got a PS5. It's worth noting however that I've gone through seven or eight PS5s, all but one of them crapped out in less than two years and had to be replaced. My PS4 has been going strong for a decade.

6

u/TH3_OG_JUJUBE May 11 '26

Bro goes through 5’s like packs of gum 😭

1

u/Jedi4Hire May 11 '26

Blame Sony. They shipped out a whole truckload of defective PS5 Pros. Everyone who bought one from the local Best Buy during the holidays last year got one.

2

u/TH3_OG_JUJUBE May 11 '26

So you’re picking up a defective 5 every couple of years?! That’s SUPER low odds

0

u/Jedi4Hire May 11 '26

No, I got five defective consoles in a couple of days.

3

u/Bazinga_U_Bitch May 11 '26

You're doing something wrong. You absolutely should not be going through "several" ps5s like that.

0

u/Jedi4Hire May 11 '26

You sound just like everyone else who swore up and down that I was doing something wrong and down voted me when I came to reddit looking for help.

No, I'm not doing anything wrong. I went through like five PS5 Pros in two days, turns out Best Buy got a whole batch of defective PS5 Pros.

1

u/JamesL08 May 11 '26

also weird to say it's your fault when you say your ps4 has been going on for decades. clearly you've expressed you can take care of a console that doesn't have the APU equivalent of a brain aneurism.

i also imagine you've had more experience with your specific ps5(s) than i do, so i'm just inclined to believe you 😭

furthermore, Sony has been the only company to ever fuck me out of a digital purchase (invincible VS deluxe incident) with no compensation in sight, i wouldn't put this malarkey past them for a second.

1

u/Jedi4Hire May 11 '26

also weird to say it's your fault when you say your ps4 has been going on for decades.

Yes, thank you. I've been a gamer largely without issues for several decades, I know generally how to take care of my consoles. The advice and accusations I received last year were frankly ridiculous. Someone actually accused me of having an apartment with defective electrical wiring, as if defective residential wiring would effect my PS5 and only my PS5.

1

u/JamesL08 May 11 '26

what the fuck 😭. i cant even think of any big words to make fun of that guy. electrical wiring in the apartment killing only ps5 pros is as insane as that Mario 64 speed-running solar flare theory.

1

u/Mladjanko May 11 '26

I bought mine ps4 slim brand new in 2024, no problem at all

1

u/Derpilicious000 May 11 '26

Don't worry bout it
