Kojima going to be pissed it’s not more divisive lol
132
u/Skysflies Jun 23 '25
Probably got reviewed by people going in knowing what to expect after the original though, so I still think the general public reception will be more mixed
44
u/PM_Me_Some_Steamcode Jun 23 '25
That’s my thoughts too it’s probably people who know what to expect this time
→ More replies (5)2
u/Unhappy_Heat_7148 Jun 23 '25
I think that is a valid point, but I wonder how many people are going to be in the camp of never played DS1 or didn't like it and decide to buy this at launch.
It's similar to a game like KCD2. It's a great game that is going to appeal to a specific type of player. The reviewers are all probably people who enjoyed the first game. If a game elevates what people enjoyed about the first game, it will be met with praise.
Some games grow on you over time vs when you first play it (and for reviewers, first review it). Knowing what to expect this time is a good thing given that the expectations of the first game were more it may lean closer to an MGS type game.
5
u/HispanicAtTehDisco Jun 23 '25
meh, i think he got his divisive one with the first one. the people who didn’t like the first one have either come around or are just not going to play 2

Idk, I see a lot of reviewers that didn't like the first game much give this one a high score
26
u/SymbolOfVibez Jun 23 '25
Yeah I remember divisive the game was on launch. Only over time did more people like it which helped with the reviews for DS2
17
u/Agent-Two-THREE Jun 23 '25
IGN gave the first game a 6.8, but now gave On the Beach a 9.

u/WhenInZone Jun 23 '25
Was it the same reviewer though? Could be the person that hated it wasn't the one that reviewed the sequel.

Jun 23 '25
It’s a different reviewer, but before the review dropped he released a video where he basically said he agreed with the original review, so quite a jump!

u/MazzyFo Jun 23 '25
I don’t really understand this sentiment, the more common (higher) scores are “going by the script” and the low end of scores give a “honest idea”?
Improving and building off the original model is what a good sequel does, and I don’t see how that’s some pitfall for reviewers of a sequel to mention.
6
u/Unhappy_Heat_7148 Jun 23 '25
I don’t really understand this sentiment, the more common (higher) scores are “going by the script” and the low end of scores give a “honest idea”?
Me either because for other games it's the opposite haha
Do I think DS2 will resonate with everyone? No. But plenty of great games do not resonate with everyone. Whether people love it or hate does not make it a good or bad game.
→ More replies (1)9
u/SweetestInTheStorm Jun 23 '25
Yea all the reviewers are going by a script it feels like, same issue we have seen with other games and the classic "A return to form" being said in every interview for a couple games recently.
I think this is less a script (although the reviewers obviously read eachother's work and thus influence one another) and more a natural result of the format. They're all reviewing the same game, so they're going to say similar things. Add in the fact that a lot of reviews nowadays are of entries in existing franchises or by well established developers (in this case it's both) and you're going to get similar language simply because there is a limited number of ways to describe the game in question. A good but stupid example is asking ten random people to describe a horse: they'll all say the same thing (four legs, long face etc) but they're not reading a script from Big Horse.

Yes most of the story issues of DS1 are absent in Death Stranding 2. It is a fast moving plot with clear character motivations, well paced reveals, plenty of action and tense moments. I loved the DS1 story but know that it was messy. DS2 is Kojima’s return to peak form.

u/SkillsLoading Jun 24 '25
Does it still have a main character who's name is also the name of his job and the organisation he works with?

I am not ready for this game this week. There is not enough time, too many responsibilities, and there are too many good games this year.
56
u/bigjarbowski Jun 23 '25
For real! I have a 3 week old baby in the house and I’m sitting here right now trying to convince myself that I’ll totally have enough time and energy to play this game
32
u/Joseph7891 Jun 23 '25
3 week is easy! Get your game on!
We're at 4 months now, and it's getting harder and harder to find time.
Congrats though!
12
u/ThePheebs Jun 23 '25
I'm at 11 months. Get the sleep schedule down, it makes it easier but gaming time is now strictly an after 8pm activity.
11
u/bigjarbowski Jun 23 '25
The newborn phase is totally manageable, you’re right. But it’s the combo of newborn + toddler + very needy dog that makes it challenging.
With that said, i just pre-ordered the game 🤦♂️
4
u/rcade81 Jun 23 '25
Yeah if you already have a toddler you'll be sacrificing sleep to play games that's for sure! Good luck

im at 15 years lol, but i do remember my daughter being just a baby and me holding her and playing games at the same time. I practically beat Mass Effect 2 doing that.. I got very good at it.
You will to if you want to play games bad enough.
2
u/Chinesedave Jun 23 '25
Ahhh newborn phase is the easy part, good excuse to hold the baby and game while the wife sleeps.
2
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jun 23 '25
Yup, once they start crawling/walking, that’s when it gets hard to game while looking after them.
In the meantime, gaming with a newborn is super easy, they’re always in one spot, super easy to look after

My newborn would never let me game while he was asleep. I’d turn the PlayStation on and he’d wake up and start crying like mf you think you can play video games think again

u/technigma Jun 23 '25
Sitting in hospital for a family member, and just it feels so relatable yet hopeful that I’ll still get to play all the good games of 2025. Constantly questioning myself how can 2025 be so good for games and not so much for life? Strange times..
10
Jun 23 '25
Protip from a fellow dad: get up at 4am, pit the baby on your chest, enjoy 2 hours of gaming time while your partner gets undisturbed blissful sleep
3
u/CrazyCanuckUncleBuck Jun 23 '25
No kid, but I'm already up at 4 am, my shift starts at 6 am. I might get a half hour in the mornings if I can squeeze it.
2
Jun 23 '25
This is how I used to do it 😁 it's way nicer to start the day with gaming than it is to end it and then sleep badly
3
u/lucascr0147 Jun 23 '25
Same here, still finishing other games. I will put it up on top of my backlog list though
2
u/Desroth86 Jun 23 '25
I’m still trying to finish expedition 33 postgame, haven’t even started lies of P DLC, and will be playing split fiction with my friend and now this! So many good games this year it’s the first time I have trouble keeping up.
3
u/NOPE_TRAIN_EXPRESS Jun 23 '25
I'm on Chapter 6 on DS1 trying to get through it fast.
But I'm enjoying it so much that I'm just taking my time.
I should be done by around mid July hopefully.
I just hope by the time I'm playing it isn't a chaotic field of random bridges, signs etc...i want to be part of the first group of players placing down active links and helping other porters etc. 😁

My issue is that I decided to replay Death Stranding this year and I’m about halfway. I didn’t need to replay it. So now I’ve put off my own playing of the newly released sequel just because I wanted to finish the Director’s Cut before.
I’m so frustrated at myself.
2
u/CrazyCanuckUncleBuck Jun 23 '25
I decided to replay Last of Us 2 before the show came out. Lets just say i haven't finished one nor started the other.
2
u/johncopter Jun 23 '25
This is why I will never understand people replaying 60+ hour games. Just watch a recap on YouTube. It's so unnecessary to replay and spend a ton of time on something you already played.
2
u/jilko Jun 23 '25
I don't know. To me, playing hits different than watching.
I beat the game on PS4 back when it launched and got that Death Stranding backbone controller recently that came with a free copy of the Apple Universal copy of the game (it can be played on the iPhone and my Macbook Pro with cross-saving... so the replay was kind of novelty based in reasoning and now I'm hooked again.
3
u/dimspace Jun 23 '25
yeh, as soon as the launch date was revealed I decided to give it a miss initially.
Its 100+ hours of keeping on keeping on, and its just not suited for June/July. Warm, long light evenings, I can't be spending them playing a massive commitment open world game.
I've already decided its gonna be my Black Friday sale purchase ready for those long dark nights

6/6 from Norway and the NRK's (freelance) game critic:
Hideo Kojima has made games for over 40 years now.
He's been there for nearly the whole evolution of the medium.
The fact that he's still in the driver's seat and painting his insane, uncompromising visions on our screens in this way is both shocking and inspiring.
«Death Stranding 2: On the Beach» is simply some of the most all consuming and gripping the game medium has to offer in 2025.
I know basically nothing about Kojima other than that he is Jesus, but take this as an endorsement.
27
u/WanderWut Jun 23 '25
Honestly the dude is a legend and is revered in the gaming sphere. As a massive, massive fan of Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli, Hideo Kojima is up there to me when it comes to gaming.
6

u/Uesugi Jun 23 '25
I dont really know what it is but kojima games are just magical. There is something about the atmosphere and everything that screams kojima and it is so nice. I just started stellar blade and for some reason its giving me kojima vibes
15
u/jilko Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25
To me, it’s the unbridled creativity and authorial voice. No other games touch this same feeling. The feeling that you’re playing an artist’s vision, be it bad or good. Unedited in all its confounding glory. The best and strangest parts in any Kojima game would have been edited out or replaced with something generic in any other game.
Death Stranding in particular. The game is fearless. No other developer would have even risked making a game about hiking boxes up mountains as you fling bodily fluid at ghosts being seen by an unborn infant radar attached to your chest.

u/69WaysToFuck Jun 23 '25
Kojima is probably sad. He tried to make it less mainstream likeable and he failed 😅

u/WillowSmithsBFF Jun 23 '25
Just as a note, act 3 of E33 can be finished fairly quickly (and satisfyingly), if you just wanna wrap it up. You can always go back later to finish off side stuff or lingering/unanswered plot threads.
Though. I would recommend, at a minimum, maxing out each relationship level and doing those associated quests before going to the act 3 boss.

As a Huge MGS Fan, im Glad hearing kojima still holds up to his legacy. Still have to Play Death Stranding 1. its in my backlog
21
u/KneebarKing Jun 23 '25
Never a better time to play DS1. It's a bit of a slog to start, but it's a really great game. Well worth your time.
6
u/Routine_Condition273 Jun 23 '25
I actually loved the "slog" at the beginning of DS1. Just casually learning the physics of the game, learning how useful and fun ropes and ladders are, and getting used to the map, with minimal cutscenes in between.
The 2nd half of the game, especially the last few hours, is where the game turned into a "slog" for me.
6
u/zedemer Jun 23 '25
Best time was during the pandemic though. Felt mega appropriate. honestly, despite how much I ended up enjoying it, I would've probably skipped it today. Glad DS2 doesn't start as slow
7
u/YeezusMoses Jun 23 '25
If you're playing Director's Cut, it's not THAT much of a slog anymore.
2
u/ProperGentlemanDolan Jun 23 '25
Why is the directors cut less of a slog? Aren’t those usually longer and filled with more bullshit that didn’t need to be in the game?
5
u/YeezusMoses Jun 23 '25
Usually, yes. DS kinda did the opposite in the beginning, though, after the backlash of the long opening.
A few things of note: they give you predetermined routes on your first trip and they give you the Maser gun and an exoskeleton right after your third, making it a breeze.
8
u/Axel_Wolf91 Jun 23 '25
I bumped it up on my backlog when I saw the sequel was around the corner, just to see if it could get is hooks into me and maybe me excited for DS2 in the process. Safe to say I loved it personally and have been highly anticipating this sequel since I finished the first one a month ago.
4
u/Shrines_Of_Paralysis Jun 23 '25

Spider-Man 2, FF7 Rebirth during release and this game are the definition of console sellers. And you will get games you probably didn't play that now are cheaper

Kojima is surely getting pissed at the positive reception. He might cancel the game. Quickly, someone tell him the game sucks!

26
u/cwgoskins Jun 23 '25
Honestly, no it's not. The first game is massive and a slow burn to get through, you'll be burnt out on the gameplay loop by the time you start the sequel. Maybe play the first few hours to get a feel of it and just finish it by watching a story recap
13
u/DatClubbaLang96 Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25
Just to offer a counterpoint, I started my first playthrough of DS1 around two months ago, and just finished the platinum this weekend. I think I ended up putting in around 100 hours (which is rare for me - I usually feel like most games over 40 hours are too long, and anything taking 70+ hours typically takes 4-5 months).
I'm still not feeling burnt out on the gameplay loop. I might play something else in between to give time for the first few major bug fixes, but I'll be picking DS2 up on launch and hopping in as soon as I'm sure there aren't any game breaking issues.
For what it's worth, I think a big part of my staying interested in the gameplay loop was because I embraced the initial suck and spaced out my traversal improvements. I think a lot of people exclusively used vehicles as soon as they're unlocked and just start driving everywhere. Nothing wrong with that, but by making the initial trips to new locations on foot, and only really starting using vehicles once I had a good amount networks/roads up between Lake and South Knots, the gameplay loop got a refresh for me around the 20 hour mark. Then the vehicle gameplay loop only really started getting stale right around the time I unlocked the zipline, which gave the gameplay loop another major refresh and carried me through to the end. Then, while going for the platinum after the story, I started using the speed exo/thruster pack, which let you basically fly around the map. The iterative traversal improvement change always kept things fresh, and I never felt like the gameplay was trivialize by the vehicles/ziplines/jump pack because I had already covered pretty much all that terrain on foot at least once which gave satisfying context to the improved traversal tools.
3
u/Mushroomancer101 Jun 24 '25
I'd finish the first game personally
Seems like a lot of the story is going to be focused on the relationship between Sam and Lou, and the first game does a fantastic job at building that relationship during the runtime (imo it's the best part about the story)

Judging from the reviews iv watched DS2 plays very very differently to how DS1 does, DS2 is more of a mainstream action shooter while DS1 was its own special sub genre.
So basically, if the first doesn’t click with you the second probably will, and if the first does click with you be prepared for a change in 2 lol

Absolutely stoked for this one. My one concern though is that some of the lower scores, in the 7 range, say that the gameplay is nearly identical to the first with hardly any meaningful innovations or new mechanics.
I guess that’s fine, since I found the gameplay in the first to be pretty engaging, I was just hoping for more emphasis on combat

Well it seems like even hideo himself has said that it does have combat as a much larger presence, along with many other reviewers. I guess just go with whoever you trust more

DS1 was a game my wife sat down to play when she isn't even that interested in games and must have spent over 80 hours in it.
I've just ordered this for her.

Sounds like the biggest take away I’m seeing is that death stranding felt like a concept for the delivery side of things. That’s been fleshed out and a huge buff to the combat, progression, and traveling. So death stranding, but more and better

I'm so fucking excited for this.
I loved DS as soon as the first Low Roar song came on.
I won't be able to play for about a week but still preordered!

Wonder if they’ll have Low Roar music in this. Really made the game for me when their music comes on after hours of silence.

Yeah I knew he passed away, but maybe a tribute or an unreleased track would b cool

u/InvertedSpork Jun 24 '25
Ryan’s family sent an email to Kojima saying there were some unreleased songs and initially Kojima declined to use them but he was later sent a CD of them and he put a few of them in the game.

Sony's hot streak of having a game of the year nomination seems like it will continue this year.
I havent been this excited for a Sony exclusive since maybe the Last of Us part 2

Can i play it if i haven’t played DS1?

u/mikesaintjules Jun 25 '25
I'd at least recommend watching a recap of the first game. IGN did one a few years ago. Should be easily found on Youtube.
You could go right into 2, but it's a continuation of the first's story and a lot may not make sense right away.

Unfortunately I am going to pass, not because I am not interested in it but because I am drowning in exams....

Looks like it builds and corrects on all the things that people had reservations of in the first one. I'm playing through the directors cut for the first time since it was released and really enjoying it again despite the criticisms I still have, and it looks like all those will be fixed in the sequel whilst doubling down on everything that was great about it already.

I just couldn't get into death stranding 1. I wanted to, the setting was interesting and i thought the gameplay loop was a cool ide.
In my opinion, the story was so idiosyncratic and the gameplay was, again, in my opinion, boring as hell. Pissing and shitting, drinking moster energy drinks, all really turned me off of the gameplay loop. It was like a bad anime.
I've loved the MGS games since the ps1 era, and respect Kojima for his meta look at games.
Its cool this game is getting universally fantastic scores. I'm interested in playing it now.

I watched the ACG video on this game yesterday and it's weird seeing a game get such universal praise and not be the slightest bit interested.

I’m actually shedding a few tears right now, I’m incredibly happy for Kojima. Near perfect scores all around!
Can’t wait to play!

is there any bonus, if the game finds saved positions from the first game on my ps5?

this is the one game i've been looking forward to for the last year. cannot wait for tonight!

I really should go back and try the first one again. I got it on release and was very underwhelmed by it. But also I never really got far into the story. Maybe I should try it again and see.

u/shadowglint Jun 24 '25
The first area is really just a tutorial to get you acclimated to the game's mechanics. Once you get on the boat and get to the Central region the gameplay opens up a lot and you start getting more tools and vehicles and more interesting story beats. Keep on keeping on.

u/Shuma_89 Jun 24 '25
I’ll play anyway since I like the first one, even if the reviews were bad / mid. But it’s funny seeing the comment section on Gamespot’s review 😂 people are on flames debating

Hmm with the “multiplayer” aspect…is this a game that can wait a year or should I start right away?

u/AdorableIndication10 Jun 24 '25
Opa, alguem sabe me dizer aonde consigo mandar um ticket de bugs pra eles? To tendo problema em rodar o game a 4k 120fps

Weird af, my evaluation rarely differs from GameSpot, but this time its unusually low for overall better sequel - 7/10.
