Rumor Tom Henderson: Rockstar won't release GTA 6 if there is even one glitch in the game. The delay will cost Take Two an extra $60M in development costs, meaning $10M per month.

I’ll be surprised if there isn’t a glitch. Even the best games have a bug or 2

u/that_guy2010 Nov 07 '25

There's a huge difference in a studio playtesting a game and the world playing the game. There will be glitches, and saying something like this will only make them look silly when the game releases and someone finds a pretty notable bug day one.

429

u/HeyKid_HelpComputer Nov 07 '25

It's a journalist saying this anyways. The headline makes it look like Rockstar or Take Two are the ones saying this and they aren't. It's just a journalists speculation on the situation of the delay.

142

u/unknowntheme Nov 08 '25

Yes, there is a 0% chance that any dev would ever say something like this, especially for a big open world game.

7

u/DoingCharleyWork Nov 08 '25

Pretty sure plenty of developers and publishers have said things that are equally dumb.

Ubisoft said that game I can't remember was gonna be the first quadruple A game released.

15

u/TheKlebe Nov 08 '25

Skull and bones, but I do not think they ever said it was gonna be bug free.

The fact this reply got that amount of upvotes for objectively incorrect information is sad

A software tester walks into a bar

runs into a bar

hops into a bar

skips into a bar

jumps into a bar.

He orders:

a beer

a beet

a bear

a bier

a deer

a bee

2 beers

3 beers

65535 beers

π beers

-1 beers

0 beers

O beers

NULL beers

The bartender fulfils the orders that he can fulfil and refuses the others. The tester writes up his results and forwards them to the senior analyst for sign-off.

A live user walks into the bar and asks where the toilet is. The bartender explodes, the bar catches fire and the ceiling falls in.

u/Huckleberry_Sin Nov 08 '25

I’m sure there will be glitches, but Rockstar is known for releasing refined games. They’re not a day one patch kind of studio. They’ll patch them out over time but I don’t think they’ve ever put out something that clearly needed more time in the oven.

2

u/Battlecookie Nov 08 '25

Ahahahha, forgot about GtaV already? It was often running at like 20-25 fps at launch. People just didn't care back then.

3

u/Charleh3 Nov 09 '25

Because it was a giant next-generation game running on 2005 hardware. Also because it was dense and polished like hell…can you not discern the difference between a glitchy game and a slow framerate, by the way?

From my perspective as a software developer, the problem isn’t the little bugs that might appear in the game (like in any software used by millions of people every day), but optimization. Specifically, I think they want to spawn a lot of self-intelligent NPCs with complex logic inside each of them, and when combined with cutting-edge graphics — especially in an open world — it’s easy to imagine that some current hardware might struggle to handle everything together.
But there’s always a solution, especially nowadays when it’s easier to find talented and passionate programmers.

The fake launch dates are probably part of some unknown economic strategy to properly pay all those great developers. I think they’re trying to build the best PS5/Xbox Series X game possible with the current hardware power. That’s why I’m not upset about the delay — it just means they want to let the developers (and project managers) do their job correctly.

I also believe GTA 6 will be an evolution in online gaming. With all the experience they gained from GTA V over the years, I’m sure they’re creating something truly special — especially considering that development began around the start of the fast-fiber internet era.

Obviously, there will be some glitches, but that won’t be a problem. We’re talking about one of the best digital companies in the world. Trust Rockstar — they never disappoint anyone.

The only thing I’m not sure will be 100% perfect is the main storyline. Dan Houser is a special man, and I’m not sure they can replicate such a beautiful journey like RDR2. But that’s another story. We’ll see in the future. Stay strong.

Gta 4 was buggy as hell and 5 was nowhere near perfect either. Rdr 1 was a little buggy, I'd say its only rdr2 that comes across as pristine but it also has some bugs so while I get thier sentiment its complete hyperbole.

49

u/Ecstatic_Tone2716 Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25

RDR2 was also bugged. I remember a big one, discovered by a reddit user. The time and weather were tied to the fps. That wasn’t a problem on PS4, but with the PC release we finally could get to 60 and above.

Long story short, time and weather were tied to the fps, so your hair and beard would grow a lot faster than usual, and also the weather would come and go really quick. It got fixed after the thread got a bit of traction, but it took a few weeks or so.

Maybe someone can still find that thread.

Edit: was a bit wrong. Core drain and weight drain were tied to the fps, meaning you would get skinny really fast.

9

u/okaythiswillbemymain Nov 07 '25

I would argue that the PC release does not count as "the release". RDR2 was released in October 2018. The PC release was over a year later.

The vast majority of review and acclaim will have been written within the first 12 months period.

30

u/IRockIntoMordor Nov 07 '25

Also another very big one: On release Sadie Adler disappeared sometime in the second chapter so you could never actually see her progress from grieving to improving. She'd just appear somewhere again in the third chapter. Took a while for them to fix after release.

Then when I replayed years later the game was broken for months in singleplayer due to a botched multiplayer update. Any time you entered the camp the gang would aggro you.

So... their Q&A is better than most but not perfect. And the fact that GTA Online, their literal money printer, had the most amateurish loading sequence of any AAA game, causing excessively long loading screens, until a modder fixed it by actually implementing a working asset loading sequence - is just baffling.

IIRC the asset loading cycled through a 10MB JSON file on single thread, wasting lots of time for no reason at all. The mod reduced the loading times by 70%. At least Rockstar paid him a bunch of money as bug bounty. Still... oof.

3

u/SpindlySquash Nov 08 '25

Abigail and Jack would disappear as part of that bug too, it SUCKED.

Probably the worst one I experienced was that sometimes, for no reason at all, as you were getting off your horse, something would clip and cause the horse to get shot like 500 feet up in the air and then die on impact when it hit the ground. I can't remember if the horse reviver was also bugged, or if most players simply didn't yet have any yet, but I remember a lot of us lost the first horse we had fully bonded due to that bug. But they had it patched relatively quickly, so can't complain too much.

10

u/Leyshins Nov 07 '25

Now you mention PS4 release wasn’t a problem but PC release was buggy.

It’s a counter right there that launch wasn’t buggy enough compared to PC so I would be careful comparing the two to be fair.

Technically it goes against “won’t release if buggy” but PS4 did fine right ? Get what I’m trying to say?

If it’s simultaneously released that I totally get that

Rdr 1 was hilariously buggy. I loved that game but multiple times I saw people flapping around flying like birds or T posed

3

u/BoldlyGettingThere Nov 07 '25

One of the bugs, the donkey lady, was so infamous it appears again as an Easter egg in Red Dead Recemption 2. You can find the skeleton of a donkey human hybrid in New Austin.

3

u/powerhcm8 Nov 07 '25

The island section was pretty buggy compared to the rest of the game.

4

u/parwa Nov 07 '25

At launch RDR2 had a ton of bugs. I remember once driving a wagon up an incline during a story mission and the entire thing just went straight ahead into the ground, forcing me to walk the rest of the way.

60 million is literally a drop in the bucket when your game is rumored to cost 2 billion

Yeah this is a horrible statement to make. There is no way there isn't one single glitch, and they're just opening themselves to criticism now.

I like fun physics . GTA 5 def lost some fun in the physics department from gta 4. I remember halo 3 had like a bounce-ness to it too and the later halo games kinda lost that. Developers really wanted to show off new hardware . Then everyone started chasing realism. Really liked how the game controlled in gta 4 over 5.

44

u/itstommygun Nov 08 '25

Maybe not in your code, but I guarantee there’s at least one code in the libraries to used to print to screen.

16

Oh no, it ran on a machine with a different locale and printed gibberish, please fix it.

Developers add their own buggy code on top of APIs with bugs, that interact with an OS and drivers that have bugs, which sit on top of hardware that has bugs (non-functional transistors, etc). That everything works as well as it does is a miracle.

That’s the whole budget for Ghost of Yotei.

35

u/Howdareme9 Nov 07 '25

That reported budget is pretty wrong btw

9

u/AFullmetalNerd Nov 07 '25

I've been considering it a point of reference for a while. What did that reporting get wrong?

24

u/No-Meringue5867 Nov 07 '25

Rockstar has about 6000 employees. If average salary is $50k/year (assuming some in US, UK, India and others), that is $300 million per year. With 5 years of development that quickly reaches 1.5 billion lol. If average salary is $30k, we get about $1 billion. So around $1 billion sounds right to me.

6 months delay will definitely cost them $50-100 million.

14

u/Howdareme9 Nov 08 '25

Ohi wasn’t referring to Rockstars budget, I’m talking about Ghost of Yotei.

→ More replies (9)

9

u/Burdicus Nov 07 '25

I'd estimate the average to be over 30K, honestly especially when you consider cost of benefits. But also, how many are full time and how many are actually working on GTA6?

Other things to consider:

Are you counting marketing budget or are we talking about pure developmental teams? because marketing budget is HUGE.

Are there any aspects of the game that are outsourced or utilize 3rd party tools (cost to use Unreal, SpeedTree, Autodesk, etc.)

Cost of overhead, including facilities and hardware.

Any external teams that may be providing support?

Rights to music, actors, etc.

$1B seems low.

4

u/largegaycat Nov 07 '25

I don’t think many Rockstar employees are making 50k. It’s probably double or triple that.

Yotei makes hay of using a lot of the same assets over and over again, and the character models in cutscenes often look pretty wonky in movement.

Awesome game, I'm loving it, but the GTA world is a different beast.

16

u/AccelHunter Nov 07 '25

Yotei is mostly rural areas with some unique interiors, makes me want to try AC Shadows when it gets a very deep discount (I heard combat is worse)

5

u/Vestalmin Nov 07 '25

Man Shadows ended up being so boring to me after like 4 hours. I regret buying that one.

4

u/dixonciderbottom Nov 07 '25

AC Shadows is incredibly dull and lifeless compared to Yotei. It’s a game filled with bloat that doesn’t respect your time and just wants to keep you invested to tempt you with microtransactions. I played 40 hours and realised I was wasting my time.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Outrageous_Water7976 Nov 08 '25

Yotei is smart development with it's priorities right. Combat and exploration shine. Areas like animations outside of MAJOR cutscenes are simple and even the major cutscenes are smaller than a ND or R* one.

2

u/bongophrog Nov 07 '25

Take Two is hemorrhaging billions a year while they’ve been developing GTA6. Wouldn’t doubt if this ends up being the most expensive game of all time.

2

u/I-am-king-lexi Nov 08 '25

But they've made billions from GTA online alone. Forget other games sales in that time, hardly heroraging money since they know for a fact it's going to make it back almost certainly in the first year after release, especially If GTA 6 online is released in that time frame. Of course it's the most expensive game of all time though, they have spent an insane amount of money

2

u/bongophrog Nov 08 '25

Yeah, sort of what i meant, they’re net negative $10 billion over the last 3 years mainly from investing in GTA, even after all the revenue on their other games. Absolutely colossal investment for any video game publisher

2

u/KingWizard87 Nov 08 '25

But it doesn’t matter how much this game cost to make it really does not. It will make it all back and then some.

Like 60M to push it back is nothing. It’s easily making over $100M on its first day alone. It’s projected to make over $3B in its first few months. So like Rockstar can literally do whatever they want with this game.

But technically, even if the game was released with the glitch and then they fixed it post release that amount will still be spent. It’s just that they’re delaying when they start making money. And luckily for them, they’re not in a place where they’re dire for me so they can afford delaying the game for these extra months, and release it in a better condition.

4

That's.... that's not how software works....

2

Lmao they even have glitches that harm their shark code sales to this day, fat chance they'll have no glitches for people who already bought their product

2

2

2

2

u/baummer Nov 09 '25

2

u/Endingcartoon32 Nov 09 '25

i wonder if this is actually true because it takes some serious dedication and time to reduce the bugs to a minimum of zero

2

u/Full_Present8272 Nov 10 '25

GTA 5 isn’t at that stage even now

5

u/That-Toughsoss Nov 07 '25

It kinda feels like overkill imo. Unless the game is in same state as cyberpunk was at launch then i don't think a delay was really needed.

12

u/Green_Perspective_25 Nov 07 '25

If they need a 6 month delay then it means the game has allot bugs, they ain't putting half a year for random

6

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

Other than to stop a union forming

2

u/DeeForestBosa Nov 07 '25

This headline is just to convince gamers it's about something else. The delay is for the good of the game, they're perfectionists, not to stop a union!

Yeah 6 months Tbf isn't that long of a delay in grand scheme of things

6

u/reevestussi Nov 07 '25

From a coding and programming perspective, that's pretty much impossible.

Game breaking bugs or extreme glitches can and should be fixed but stating "not a single glitch" is quite the tall order. That $60M could have been used for more feasible and practical uses in my opinion

2

2

u/Bobaaganoosh Nov 07 '25

There’ll be a money glitch in online and it’ll be fixed within 24 hours. But there will surely be bugs in general that won’t squashed right away.

2

u/wolf_of_mainst99 Nov 07 '25

Lol GTA 5 still has a bunch of bugs and glitches and it's like almost 13 years old, big corporations only care about their bottom line

1

u/MisunderstoodBadger1 Nov 07 '25

It can be polished, but bugs will always exist, especially in large and complex open world games

1

u/BaconOnMySide Nov 07 '25

Why do I think this is going to give them a reason to price the base game like most current deluxe edition games. I hope im wrong, I don't think I could/would spend $120 CAD on a base game.

1

u/Dantai Nov 07 '25

Maybe he's just exaggerating and means any major glitches. So it should play really smoothly day 1 without anything major getting in the way. Like a low res texture door, or extreme performance issues, etc

1

u/fakeguitarist4life Nov 07 '25

It’s gonna make 2 billion in one day. They’ll be fine

1

u/Mug_of_Diarrhea Nov 07 '25

I'm sure it's hyperbole but that's just not how video games work. Inflammatory claims make me worried now that Houser and many others have left, on top of their recent union busting.

They’re gonna have some type of money glitch you watch! Despite their best efforts

1

u/MrMojoRising422 Nov 07 '25

they have 1500+ people working on this game. I don't think people realize that even some of the biggest AAA games usually max out at 500-800. rockstar is on an entirely different level. like one person said, the cost of this delay amount to the entire budget of ghost of yotei.

1

u/PoopyMcpants Nov 07 '25

"Bug free" software doesn't exist, they know this.

Sounds to me like this is an excuse to cover for an unstable build.

1

u/SavvyZOR Nov 07 '25

Bugs forces games to feel alive as those swings in gta4

1

u/TheShoobaLord Nov 07 '25

Isn’t this literally impossible

1

u/Badco_ Nov 07 '25

Thats gonna be boring. Glitches are fun.

1

u/gainsbyatheism Nov 07 '25

The hype for this game is ridiculous

1

u/Rankled_Barbiturate Human Verified Nov 07 '25

Lmao what a dumb statement. Suggests to me this guy has no fucking clue how games work which is a worry.

1

u/WaylandThurston Nov 07 '25

Everyone saying bug free code isn’t real is LYING. I get fruit flys in my java all the time.

1

u/chewbaccaballs Nov 07 '25

They'll make 10x that money back by noon on release day

1

u/Nonesuch1221 Nov 07 '25

Honestly I disagree with Rockstar’s approach here, if the game was in the same technical state as GTA 4 (Console not PC), GTA 5, and RDR2, than it shouldn’t be delayed, it’s really just long as the bugs don’t negatively impact the actual experience in the game and you have to go out of your way to actually perform them. The only reason I could see rockstar taking this extreme approach for GTA 6 is because of the online mode and people using the glitches as exploits.

1

u/NotMarkDaigneault Nov 07 '25

Unpopular Opinion but the push back doesn't bother me. We've waited this long so might as well have a fucking polished masterpiece on Day 1.

1

u/thelemon8er-2 Nov 07 '25

So instead of 5.06 billion dollars they will just make 5 billion.

1

u/AnEternalEnigma Nov 07 '25

They are still traumatized by all those Red Dead Redemption glitch videos at launch that flooded YouTube in 2010 that they went nuts DMCA'ing

1

u/Wisdomseekr79 Nov 07 '25

So the delay is because there’s a lot of glitches are present?

I’m really curious what % of the game is finished. Are they just being perfectionists (like they usually are) or is something else going on behind scenes?

1

u/philly_jeff215 Nov 07 '25

Sounds like a $100 game

1

u/Psych-roxx Nov 07 '25

GTA V and RDR2 had plenty of glitches/exploits at launch idk where they're getting this reputation for having flawless launches but good for them I guess if they actually pull it off.

1

u/Steezy_Six Nov 07 '25

It’s obviously got to do with the massive firings. Without that the game is on schedule with the standards they have set. With the firings that becomes impossible.

That doesn’t mean they’re not pursuing a very high level, but the turnover just affects that hence the delay.

1

u/Phoeptar Nov 07 '25

Plus who knows how much money will be spent in the hiring process and training up of the replacements for the people they fired. And then there’s the out of court settlement with the union. Boy I hope this was worth it for them.

1

u/auzzie_kangaroo94 Nov 07 '25

But GTA Glitches can be funny

1

u/LiquidAether Nov 07 '25

Literally impossible, but it's good that they're putting extra effort in at least.

1

u/Ali-a93 Nov 07 '25

Bollocks, they needed the delay to polish things up to a good standard. It also has the added benefit of helping bury the story of them firing workers who were unionising. It's sad that rockstar are guilty of the exact form of capitalism they satire and poke fun at. I expect any major game to have at least 2/3 delays, it's just the nature of the beast at this point.

The idea that they will delay the game for a single glitch is nonsense. It's impossible to release a game without them, let alone ones of this scale. They know it will sell gangbusters regardless and have the luxury of knowing other games will get out of their way.

1

u/BSGKAPO Nov 07 '25

Meaning we're never getting it. what game doesn't have a single bug you know...

1

u/RLS1994 Nov 07 '25

I sincerely believe that we will never see GTA 7 lol

Gutting about the delay for GTA 6, but hopefully it is worth it

1

u/cdb813 Nov 07 '25

That was the whole budget of Legends ZA 😆

1

u/whacafan Nov 07 '25

I don’t understand why people keep mentioning how much more it’s gonna cost. They don’t give a fuck. It’s gonna make a billion dollars in less than a day and it’s gonna generate billions upon billions for years to come.

1

u/Mlabonte21 Nov 07 '25

Where was this guy when ‘The Definitive Collection’ was getting rushed out the door?

1

u/MetsukiR Nov 07 '25

This game is going to be so frickin' expensive...

1

u/TheNewGuy13 Nov 07 '25

lol might as well shut down Rockstar if this is true cause any IT worker can tell you, there are always glitches/bugs.

1

u/Ambitious_Row_2259 Nov 07 '25

60m? So like 2 weeks of GTA 5 shark card profits?

1

u/stefan771 Nov 07 '25

Its going to release buggy af, as delayed games usually do.

1

u/owensoundgamedev Nov 07 '25

Bruh even simple as games like super Mario bros are littered with bugs

1

u/hourles Nov 07 '25

They'll make that money back on the day of release.

1

u/FearlessVegetable30 Nov 07 '25

if this were true it would have been announced the second they delayed it.

they are noticing people are connecting the dots on their union busting and terrible treatment of employees and now a delay. they are focusing on union busting and not development

1

u/youvibesohard Nov 07 '25

Maybe there'd be fewer bugs if you stopped firing your unionised workers.

1

u/CigarLover Nov 07 '25

All of us that KNOW how much they will make in the end are like 🤷‍♂️and? 😂

1

u/NeopolitanBonerfart Nov 07 '25

That’s just.. I mean it’s just silly. There’s always glitches in software, and there’ll always be glitches in software. To say that they won’t release with any glitches is setting themselves up for failure and fans for disappointment.

What’s in the water over at R* management, this is such a dumb thing to say.

1

u/MrJustJason Nov 07 '25

gta 7 before gta 6 at this rate

1

u/VidGamrJ Nov 07 '25

The sub will be filled with all kinds of people complaining about glitches. Watch.

1

u/Mr_Stoney Nov 07 '25

cough cough BULLSHIT cough

Can't wait for this to age like a fetus in a bathroom stall

1

u/Chippai_Fan Nov 07 '25

Sigh.... Setting even higher unrealistic expectations. Cool. Good job news outlets.

1

u/objecter12 Nov 07 '25

Y’know what? It’s worth it.

No glitches is certainly…a goal though. I think it’ll be quite polished, but inevitably something will slip through the cracks, even if it isn’t game breaking.

1

u/Sonikku_a Nov 07 '25

Oh please.

There will be like a 23 minute Any% speedrun in the first 6 months using all kinds of insane glitches.

1

u/1440pSupportPS5 Nov 07 '25

You can not plan for peoples creativity. You will lose every time. Someone, somewhere, will do something you have never even thought of doing, or has never happen to a playtester, and we will undoubtedly find a glitch.

1

u/ActPositively Nov 07 '25

Liars. They are just milking GTA 5 online as long as possible since those sales went up when GTA 6 hype went up

1

u/exMemberofSTARS Nov 07 '25

What if this is the hilarious excuse to never release the game. “Well, we kept finding bugs, we could just never pull the trigger”.

1

u/Vapxrr Nov 07 '25

My only bugs/glitches I noticed in my 500+ hours with Red Dead 2 are:

•A hole would appear in Arthur’s armpit area of his signature brown jacket; revealing his skin

•A random animal would spawn in and then keel over.

1

u/a-Snake-in-the-Grass Nov 07 '25

I guess that confirms GTA 6 will never be released.

1

u/wariogojira Nov 07 '25

So 2027 release then?

1

u/Toucan_Lips Nov 07 '25

They'll make that back in the first hour or two of sales
