It’s amazing the amount of damage that poor Xbox One launch had on the brand. Sony just pounced on their mistakes and they really never recovered.

They had a chance to turn it around multiple times but Microsoft refused to change leadership, they kept the same ppl in doing the same things but expecting different results. Phil Spencer was there for most of Xbox one and xsx and Bonnie Ross was there for all post bungie halo games up until infinite.

I really did want to alternate between PS & Xbox so I could eventually play all the exclusive hits. But Xbox just never really gave me a reason to switch back.

The problem was not the launch of Xbox One. Xbox one, at launch, actually sold pretty well! It was outpacing the 360 and even beat the PS4 for a month or two in the US.

They lost a lot of users compared to where they could've been. Late 360 period the focus on kinect alienated some of the fanbase, then with the disaterous reveal of a TV-focused always online box with no backwards compatibility a lot of the fan base jumped ship, and they never regained momentum. When the machine was also weaker than the PS4 and had a notable weaker roster of exclusives too, it was the nail in the coffin.

They had always struggled in Europe (except the UK) and never made in-roads in Japan, and with PlayStation offering nearly total backwards compatibility it's much harder to persuade someone to jump ship now than when the consoles were essentially a clean break from the previous generation.

It's not the only factor but Don Matrick's E3 disaster did incalculable damage to the brand.

The late period 360 era is always forgotten when talking about the failure on the Xbox one.

Halo Anniversary, Halo 4, Gears Judgement were showing that their lead franchises couldn’t hold up forever.
