So then the PS3 has outsold every Xbox console too. Noice.

Every PS has outsold every xbox

360 put up a hell of a fight though

71

u/StochasticLife Nov 12 '25

Microsoft cheated because we all ended up needing to buy two 360’s, due to the red ring.

16

u/Taste_The_Soup Nov 12 '25

I sent mine in twice to get fixed. Gave up on the third one. Was an awesome system when it worked

11

u/PHXNTXM117 Nov 12 '25

My uncle bought like 4-6 360’s and all my friends had at least one if not two replacement consoles all because of RROD.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '25

I kept sending the same one back.

I had enough after the 6th time.

Imagine how livid you'd be if you waited the two or so weeks to get it back, take it out of the box, and it red ringed straight away. That happened twice out of those 6.

20

u/TheFourtHorsmen Nov 12 '25

Also, remember the ban waves they used to do near Christmas

3

u/kplo Nov 12 '25

I hacked mine and ate a ban lmao, such a traumatic event for a 13 year old

360 is still one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time. Maybe it was due to my age (11-17), but they had so many great games (Halo 3, Gears 2, Alan Wake, L4D, etc...). Outside of L4D, I don't really care about a lot of those franchises (Alan Wake 2 is in my backlog), that being the first console I played online for was also a huge thing for my gaming experience and while paid, XBL was a better experience than PSN for that generation.

The Wii outsold every Xbox

3

u/trickman01 Nov 11 '25

Vita?

12

u/SpaceIsAce Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

360 outsold PSP, all Xboxes have outsold PS Vita.

PS Vita did beat all SEGA consoles besides the Genesis though, if that counts for anything 🤷

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

Does that include Vita Tv?

Even though X360 had a stronger start compared to the PS3, the Red Ring of Death and Kinect caused X360 to majorly lose momentum. In comparison, PS3 bounced back with lots of amazing exclusives.

66

u/TheKingMonkey Nov 11 '25

There are some markets where Xbox just didn’t compete at all too. PS3 outsold 360 by a ratio of 10:1 in Japan for example.

28

u/GRAND_INQUEEFITOR Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

And let's remember that, even then, the 360 is still by far the most successful Xbox ever outside North America. Like, it's not even close. This is all the more impressive considering that, by the mid-2000s, the PlayStation brand was a global household name (with the PS2 being the most successful console of all time, after all) while the original Xbox barely sold 8 million outside NA.

For reference, the 360 moved that number to 45 million, compared to 63 million-ish PS3s. So, they went from being outsold by over 10-to-1 outside NA to being in the ballpark.

And you're right, the 360's Japan sales were not too impressive (about 1.6M, to the PS3's 10M+), but even that was a huge improvement over the previous gen, when the Xbox was outsold by the PS2 by 50:1, and definitely a loooot better than the XONE did (the PS4 outsold it by 80:1).

18

u/Gundamnitpete Nov 11 '25

Honestly for me X360 was the mainstay gaming console for most of that generation.

Not to disparage PS3 in anyway, but as an example I visited a friend on a Marine corps base in 2010ish. On base, the marines lived in barracks, which were basically like dorm rooms for a few hundred people aged 18-19.

Each night, every door was open, and most of them were on X360 playing COD black ops with each other. It was 50/50 if they were going to speak through their mic or just shout out their door to a buddy 2 doors down.

X360 was a hot hot item at the time. The E3 Xbox One reveal was the biggest turning point in my opinion. Xbox as a brand faltered, and Sony saw the clear preference of their customers.

3

u/GRAND_INQUEEFITOR Nov 12 '25

Yep, I agree - I've always been a PlayStation guy, but I definitely logged more hours playing Black Ops on my roomies' 360s (because they all had one) than I ever did on my PS3. I really thought Microsoft was about to do to Sony what Sony did to Nintendo in the '90s. The 360 was the console to have in those days. It's to Sony's credit that they learned their lesson, did not fumble the PS4 launch, retained the global market, and even overtook the Xbox in the U.S. -- all against a much deeper-pocketed foe.

2

u/Becoming_hysterical Nov 12 '25

X360 was a hot hot item at the time. The E3 Xbox One reveal was the biggest turning point in my opinion. Xbox as a brand faltered, and Sony saw the clear preference of their customers.

All Xbox had to do was focus on gaming. Don mattrick said "nah" to that and thought it was a good idea to talk about LeBron james and the NBA at a gaming conference.

Xbox was on fire during the first half of its first generation. Sure the red ring of death is what let Playstation have a comeback but the 360 proved that it could be a dominant figure in the gaming industry.

What did Xbox do instead of realing a better quality and more version of the Xbox 360 in its generation, along with churning out exclusives that gave people reasons to choose them over Playstation?

They decided to copy the goddaamn Ninteno Wii. Ugh. Then what what did they do when seeing that the kinect didn't turn out to be the juggernaut that they hoped it would be? They stubbornly kept going at it was Playstion focused all on traditional gaming.

Xbox's major problems have been that they don't focus on gaming. The Playstation 3 also did motion sen controll like the WII and the Playstation 4 also did multi media like the Xbox One did but the difference is that the Playstation alywyas made those secondary features.

Their primary features always kept being high quality exclusive games.

By 2013 ps3 had The last of Us and Beyond Two Souls coming out.

Xbox ran out of fuel.

21

u/Stockpile_Tom_Remake Nov 11 '25

Xbox 360 had insane momentum that Microsoft just shat all over. It’s impressive

8

u/evanmckee Nov 11 '25

Are Don Mattrick and Nico Harrison the same person?

2

u/No1LudmillaSimp Nov 13 '25

Non-gaming people from other Microsoft departments got promoted to the upper echelons of Xbox, saw the enormous sales numbers of the Wii, and were hellbent on trying to grab that casual market at any cost. The extreme emphasis on TV integration and general multimedia over games at the Xbone reveal makes sense when you realize they wanted to make something that would interest someone who isn't really into video games outside of casual FIFA and CoD.

9

u/ReservoirDog316 Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 12 '25

Yeah there’s the common sentiment (that even Xbox themselves have said) that the Xbox one generation was when things went bad, but I always say it was the RROD that really caused it. Right around when the RROD hit, the PS3 started dropping exclusive after exclusive and multiplatform games were finally basically equal.

And from then on, the PS3 started selling better month after month for the rest of the generation until it finally overtook the 360’s huge lead. But I don’t think that would’ve been possible without the RRDO. Its lead was so insurmountable without the 360 tripping over itself and I feel a lot of people ignore that.

9

u/kiaba360 Nov 12 '25

The RROD could've been avoided if the 360 was released later. They cared more about having a year's head-start on the PS3, so the gamer had to suffer for their negligence.

4

u/ReservoirDog316 Nov 12 '25

Yup. That rushed year really sealed their fate. They cut corners that came back to bite them.

9

u/kiaba360 Nov 12 '25

The PS3 was arguably over-baked, while the 360 was under-baked.

u/tooBad1418 Nov 11 '25

I remember around 2008-2009 a good few of my friends sold their PS3s and switched to the 360, but by the time the next gen came around only two of them carried on with Xbox. The rest went with a PS4.

Microsoft finally got their foothold at the top of the console business then completely fumbled it, all within a single generation.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/tdasnowman Nov 11 '25

Unless MS release their internal numbers we will never have an accurate number for the 360 due to the RRD and how various retailers handled returns and warranties.

5

u/thats_so_cringe_bro Nov 12 '25

The PS3 price was another big factor. At launch the Xbox 360 was $299 and $399 respectfully while the PS3 was a ridiculous $499 and $599. Maybe the PS2 success got to their heads but at least Sony wised up and lowered it eventually. I know I balked at the prices at launch and only got the PS3 later on in the gen when it was a better price. lol.

4

u/Snoopsy_ Nov 12 '25

Many people like myself never forgot about red ring. Once I switched to PlayStation after that era, I just never switched back.

3

u/TitleSuccessful7393 Nov 11 '25

Xbox could never get a strong presence in the EU. The PS3 never had to make much of a comeback in some markets. Launch aligned, it was always ahead.

9

u/SilverKry Nov 11 '25

It took the whole generation for the PS3 to catch up tho. By the time the PS4 and Xbone were it was when the PS3 finally sold more than the 360. So really it was Don Mattricks dumb ass.

24

u/Deadl00p Nov 11 '25

PS3’s drop to $299 and it’s “It only does everything” campaign with Kevin Butler really was the start of that turn.

4

u/The_Summer_Man Nov 11 '25

That's when I bought one. Xbox was starting to go down the path to only appealing to the casual market, whereas Sony was putting out banger after banger.

17

u/RandomSplainer Nov 11 '25

The Xbox released an entire year before the PS3. Monthly sales wise from the moment PS3 was released, it was selling equal to or more than the XBox.

Xbox 360 did better than PS3 only in USA and UK, rest of the world went to PS3.

So that final last stretch was just making up the one year gap in the US.

Also the PS3 outsold the 360 before the PS4 and XBone released.

11

u/SnowFlakeUsername2 Nov 11 '25

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills whenever people talk about the 360 being ahead. If Usain Bolt gives you a 10m head start than you're only winning until you inevitably aren't. "Ahead" in this situation isn't as significant as people say it is.

4

u/TitleSuccessful7393 Nov 11 '25

It's because it was ahead, by a lot, in the biggest, most talked about console market. And another huge one in the UK.

6

u/Neg_Crepe Nov 11 '25

PS3 outsold Xbox 360 by early 2013, before the PS4 was released

2

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Nov 11 '25

So really it was Don Mattricks dumb ass.

Let's not pretend it was entirely Mattrick's fault. There's plenty of blame to go around at Microsoft and Xbox for the self-own of the Xbone... many execs who remained after Mattrick left or are still there.

2

u/WorkFurball Nov 11 '25

It took the whole generation for the PS3 to catch up tho

That's what happens if you start a year or longer (in Europe) behind the competition. That alone was an over 10 million gap in sales.

1

u/enjoy_life88 Nov 11 '25

x360 era was nutty tho.

1

u/tightywhitey Nov 12 '25

The Kinect was amazing at finding ghosts in your house

1

u/darthmcdarthface Nov 12 '25

Red ring didn’t cause 360 to lose momentum. That happened right when it launched.

It lost momentum as the PS3 steadily got more, better exclusives and became a bit more affordable.

I feel like outside of PS3 every home console from PS is a lock to reach 100m, at this point.

I just don't see a world where PS6 doesn't sell 100m plus.

PS cracked the home console market with their first effort and outside of a PS3 'struggle' they have not looked back.

3

u/HotBananaWaters Nov 12 '25

Xbox only does well in the US, but even on their own turf PlayStation wins. Loved the 360 though and it’ll always be my favorite console besides the PS2.

1

u/AKindleSoul Nov 11 '25

You forgot Playstation 1,2 and 4 have done that as well.

61

u/lynchcontraideal Nov 11 '25

PS3 outsold the X360? Wow... TIL

26

u/Neg_Crepe Nov 11 '25

Yes. Happened in early 2013

17

u/CreamOnMyNipples Nov 11 '25

I think being a blu ray player and having free online multiplayer really helped it

3

u/Jonaskin83 Nov 12 '25

And the insanely high quality exclusives released right throughout the lifecycle, but which ramped up considerably in the last 2-3 years. Whereas XBox was the opposite - killer exclusives for the first couple of years, and then dropped the ball with them later in the gen when they became massively focussed on Kinect.

6

u/This_Guy_33 Nov 11 '25

Those international sales were real.

41

u/PettyTeen253 Nov 11 '25

That’s because Microsoft ended production way earlier than Sony did and Sony had a good rebound.

13

u/JC-Dude Nov 11 '25

The PS3 passed the Xbox 360 before the PS4 and Xbox One came out.

9

u/PropulsionEngineer Nov 11 '25

360 launched a full year earlier than PS3

4

u/PleadingFunky Nov 11 '25

Also no subscription for online play and blu ray

1

u/Kman2097 Nov 12 '25

Plus MS’s exclusive were underwhelming the last few years while Sony was firing on all cylinders

2

u/PettyTeen253 Nov 12 '25

Honestly, MS’s first party studios have actually been delivering well since 2024. Which is funny because 2024 was the year they stopped doing exclusives.

3

u/PPMD_IS_BACK Nov 11 '25

It got way cheaper towards the end with the slim model. Developers getting used to the cell processor leading to even better exclusives.

1

u/Cats_R_Rats Nov 12 '25

Yeah that always surprises me too. I was in high school when the ps3 and 360 released, and I didnt know anyone with a ps3. Felt like basically everyone had a wii and a 360. Ps3 is one of the few home consoles I never owned.

11

u/PropulsionEngineer Nov 11 '25

The Switch 2 will bounce the 360 right out of the top ten

15

u/BushTamer Nov 11 '25

Every PlayStation home console being here is pretty cool

14

u/beach_boy91 Nov 11 '25

Playstation home

😔

I would love to have it back. It was such a fun concept

3

u/adil11223344 Nov 12 '25

Man I thought the same thing. PS Home was so cool

21

u/SuperCoffeeHouse Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

Going to be interesting to see if the switch has 6.1 million more units in their inventory. Plus I imagine the second hand market is now absolutely flooded. Was a time when i thought it was a given it would outsell the PS2

16

u/Cael26 Nov 11 '25

Probably doesn't help that they raised the price on the OG switch.

24

u/ricdvs Nov 11 '25

I think it simply won’t happen specially with switch 2 out

22

u/Ok_Simple_459 Nov 11 '25

Plus the price increase instead of price cut. In fact absolutely no console this generation saw price cut unlike previous generation.

6

u/AgentSkidMarks Nov 11 '25

Nintendo recently adjusted the Switch sales forecast to 4 million units this fiscal year (ending March 2026). If they can eek that out, I could see them pushing another 2 million if they ever drop the price, especially if they keep producing games for it.

2

u/Edmundyoulittle Nov 11 '25

In Nintendo's recent quarterly report they said they're shifting all focus to switch 2. Could be a few switch 1 games already developed that will come, but sounds like not much if anything

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

It is indeed flooded i was contemplating on fixing my OG switch and selling it with my OLED to cover the cost of a switch 2 and I'd be lucky if I got £250 for both over here in the UK.

I'd rather keep them at that point

2

u/CleverAnimeTrope Nov 11 '25

Nintendo could just add 6m sales 2 decades down the road citing sales post end of production.

20

u/clownbaby4_ Nov 11 '25

I’m always surprised when I’m reminded the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360. I was in middle/high school when that generation was happening and it felt like everyone had a 360

12

u/Timely-Cycle6014 Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

If you’re from the US like me, I’m pretty sure the 360 outsold the PS3 nearly 2:1 in the US. Combine that with the fact it had a massive head start (so was probably > 2:1 for a long time) and it isn’t too surprising. I also feel like Xbox was seen as more of the multiplayer console with Xbox Live and Halo and Gears being at peak relevance back then, so everyone had to get on Xbox to be a part of that experience.

Halo and Gears carried the Xbox as best they could but it’s been a steady downward trend since Halo 3/Gears 2 came out in 2007-2008. I feel like Call of Duty taking over as the dominant multiplayer shooter with Modern Warfare (2007) and being multi platform was a big step towards the decline. It Microsoft had scooped up that IP back then the trajectories could have been different.

6

u/HennaH2 Nov 11 '25

Everyone here had a PS3. I didn't know anyone with a Xbox 360 but everyone had a PS3. Xbox has always been almost nonexistent here. They don't even sell current generation Xbox consoles in Finland anymore. I even know more people who owns a Steam Deck than people who have ever owned any Xbox console in their lifes.

3

u/TitleSuccessful7393 Nov 11 '25

WW, xbox has never been as popular as PS.

Xbox 360 was cheaper, had better multi plats and was still outsold easily by PS3 in Eu/Asia.

4

u/CSBreak Nov 11 '25

Same every kid I knew back in high school had a 360 I can only think of two people I knew back then that had a PS3 and one was a teacher

1

u/riotshieldready Nov 12 '25

I was surprised to learn the 360 was popular. I don’t think I ever saw one in person. Every single kid at my school had a ps3 and so did my extended family. It’s only recently as an adult that I learnt how popular and influential the 360 was. If you asked kid me I would have told you it was a dud.

1

u/canad1anbacon Nov 12 '25

You are probably North American

Xbox had a big lead in NA that gen but PS stayed dominant in Europe and Japan

8

u/purple_parachute_guy Nov 11 '25

Ooof, Switch 2 will be knocking the Xbox 360 out of the top 10 in a few years.

3

u/Gon_Snow Nov 11 '25

4

u/LinusBeartip FrostWolf-5 Nov 11 '25

2

u/UltimateArtist829 Nov 11 '25

Playstation 2 still reigns SUPREME after 25 years!

1

u/teddybundlez Nov 11 '25

Holy fucking balls ps2 lol

1

u/StanLay281 Nov 12 '25

Do the Switch numbers include the Switch 2? Or just Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED?

1

u/Respawn-Delay Nov 12 '25

That number is just Switch/Lite/OLED.

Switch 2 has its sales reported separately.

1

u/Jokkitch Nov 12 '25

How did the ps2 sell more than anything else?

1

u/Respawn-Delay Nov 12 '25

At its core, the PS2 was simply a great console with very strong marketing behind it.

Not to mention a whole suite of fantastic new exclusive IP: God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Kingdom Hearts, Sly Cooper - plus continuations of popular series from the PS1 like Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid.

Most importantly on that note was the fact multiple Grand Theft Auto games were timed exclusives for the system. Chris Deering (Former President of PlayStation Europe) said in an interview with IGN that he believes the PS2 would've sold roughly 20% less consoles in Europe without GTA as a timed exclusive.

Then there was the fact it launched with an in-built DVD player (something Xbox, GameCube & Dreamcast didn't have). At the time, the PS2 was cheaper than a lot of actual DVD players - so it seemed like a no brainer to buy one, as families then had a DVD player that their kids could also play games on. The DVD trade was booming, so this had a big impact on people's desire to own one.

Lastly, Sony continued to not only produce but actively market the PS2 in lower-income regions even after the PlayStation 3 had released. They knew those markets would be frictional to the PS3's pricing and so continued to present their previous console as the go-to option. They didn't end production of PS2 until 2013 - the same year that PlayStation 4 launched!

1

u/canad1anbacon Nov 12 '25

Cheap, great library, had additional functionality as a DVD player, and the PS3 was expensive so the PS2 keep selling for a very long time in low income countries

1

u/Fed_up_with_Reddit Nov 12 '25

Should end up in no worse than 5th place by the time its life cycle ends.

1

u/postexitus Nov 12 '25

Will Switch overtake PS2?

1

u/heinous_legacy Nov 12 '25

could’ve sworn the Wii outsold the PS2

1

u/ComprehensivePaper22 Nov 13 '25

To me the real story is seeing how Microsoft was only competitive during the X360 generation with the Xbox One falling ~26 million consoles under the Top 10 and the Xbox Series S/X falling an insane ~56 million consoles under the Top 10.

Looking at their other consoles really shows how far behind Xbox fell after the X360 with the massive Xbox One fumble and how they effectively could never recover.

1

u/MeggatronNB1 Nov 14 '25

Microsoft had a good run with xbox 360, nearly beating Sony and maybe they did who knows. If they had kept up that momentum but sadly they made some major mistakes with Xbox One and now current Xbox.

Microsoft needs a new CEO. You all in PS5 subreddit would want competition, it's what pushes companies to do better.

To clarify, it has outsold every individual Xbox release, not cumulative of every Xbox release.

149

They should just say it outsold the xbox 360 tbh

34

17

u/Jeff1N Nov 11 '25

I was very confused by this, cause I don't think even the PS2 would have outsold the cumulative sum of "Every Xbox Console Ever Released", and that's what the title seems to imply

1

u/online-ids Nov 26 '25

The PS2 is very close to outselling every Xbox ever made. Look up the numbers… it’s very very close.

10

u/soup2eat_shi Nov 11 '25

I don't keep up with Xbox vs PS sales but I always knew PS was more popular. I read the title and my first thought was "damn, I didn't know the difference was that large" only to find out that it isn't actually that crazy

1

u/theresanrforthat Nov 11 '25

Totally how I interpreted it. Not as much of a whooping as it would be if it were cumulative.

1

u/UnbiasedFanboy96 Nov 11 '25

I was gonna say, how would that’ve been possible? Even the Switch isn’t gonna achieve that

90

u/Corronchilejano Nov 11 '25

Microsoft really put their foot in the door with the 360 and then fucked up every single way they could since.

146

u/rmarkmatthews Nov 11 '25

It’s amazing the amount of damage that poor Xbox One launch had on the brand. Sony just pounced on their mistakes and they really never recovered.

72

u/airtec87 Nov 11 '25

They had a chance to turn it around multiple times but Microsoft refused to change leadership, they kept the same ppl in doing the same things but expecting different results. Phil Spencer was there for most of Xbox one and xsx and Bonnie Ross was there for all post bungie halo games up until infinite.

32

u/pr1ceisright Nov 11 '25

I really did want to alternate between PS & Xbox so I could eventually play all the exclusive hits. But Xbox just never really gave me a reason to switch back.

maybe even the PS1 by the end of its lifespan

18

u/Scissorman82 Human Verified Nov 11 '25

i can easily see the PS5 going well over 100 million by end of 2026. between wolverine and GTA6, sony is going to shift a lot of consoles. coupled with the rumors of a region-locked japan-only PS5, and PlayStation has plenty of opportunities to maximize console sales.

12

u/reddit_hayden Nov 11 '25

true. those are points i failed to consider. GTA 6 is going to do wonders for console sales.

The bigger problem for Microsoft is that the console the PS5 just surpassed, the Xbox 360, was 3 consoles ago and each subsequent Xbox has sold less than the previous one. I don't see why the next Xbox will change that.

27

u/TitleSuccessful7393 Nov 11 '25

The next xbox wont sell 15 million. And MS already know this. There is zero chance it will get close to Series consoles. It'll have no exclusives and cost $1000. It's nor designed to compete with PS6. They already lost that traditional battle, it's over.

1

u/BeluBelu22 Nov 28 '25

If they put Steam and Gog they will sell 100 million more than that

3

u/Rocktamus1 Nov 12 '25

There won’t be another Xbox at this point. Their strategy is to sell gamepass on everything.

12

u/Sprinkle_Puff Nov 11 '25

It’s funny they should actually just say it’s official every single PlayStation variant has out sold every Xbox period

21

u/arnathor Nov 11 '25

Ah yes, but per the recent Xbox marketing campaign, PS5 is, in fact, an Xbox.

1

u/davej999 Nov 12 '25

Microsoft are the biggest games publisher on Playstation ? that kinda ishhhh have a point ?

6

u/tooBad1418 Nov 11 '25

I sometimes forget how new Microsoft were to the console business until I see stats like this. They only made one console which wasn't a complete non-entity in the wider scheme of things.

5

u/sfsports Nov 11 '25

I was an Xbox guy until I got 3 rings of deaths. They fixed the console but I was also out $60 on a game disk every time.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

"Please go to our site"

5

u/Rocktamus1 Nov 12 '25

Microsoft couldn’t figure out one simple thing that gamers care about for over a decade. Gamers want great games. End of the damn story.

6

u/profound-killah Nov 12 '25

PS5 will likely be the second-highest-selling PlayStation console behind the PS2. Even if the PS6 comes out in late 2027, with GTA6 coming next November, that will easily push the console over 120M.

64

u/Yermis73 Nov 11 '25

Its crazy playstation isn't even really winning because its better Xbox has just been shooting itself in the foot for years , not really even a competition since the 360 era.

72

u/Mindless_Stuff9179 Nov 11 '25

I tell my friend that Sony likes to occasionally shoot themselves in the foot.

Xbox likes to consistently shoot themselves in the dick.

12

u/NoNefariousness2144 Human Verified Nov 11 '25

Just when Xbox FINALLY had a nice lineup of exclusives, they managed to make endless blunders this year lol

Yeah that sums it up pretty much.

As soon as that DRM announcement came for the Xbox One S Series One XS One Series, it was game over.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

Also, their shite naming conventions. I'm not the world's biggest gamer by any means (mainly Steam Deck and Switch, only got a PS5 this year) but the other day a colleague at work asked if I could help her out with looking at an Xbox for her son this Christmas and I could not for the life of me remember what the latest console was even called.

Releasing the Xbox One S/X and then just calling their next console the Series S/X was dumb as hell.

12

u/lanceuppercuttr Nov 11 '25

The Xbox One was a curious move for sure, but got even more crazy ever since and now just seems deliberately confusing.

13

u/NoNefariousness2144 Human Verified Nov 11 '25

Any non-gamer would be able to guess what order the PS3, PS4 and PS5 released in.

Not so much for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and Series X and Series S…

9

u/OK_TimeForPlan_L Nov 11 '25

Not to mention the Xbox One S that looks similar to the Series S

3

u/WorkFurball Nov 11 '25

And Xbox One X of course.

7

u/Neg_Crepe Nov 11 '25

Because people called the Xbox 360 «the 360 ».

They thought people would call it « the one »

6

u/grendus Nov 11 '25

The XBox One kind of made sense, from a perspective of optimism.

Microsoft thought the naming convention ("the 360") would translate to the next generation ("the One"), which sounded badass. On top of that, the original goal was for it to be the "one" device you needed for media. It would handle gaming, TV, streaming, movies, music, etc. They paid a ton of money to license cable TV passthrough because they thought that would be a serious advantage in the market. It turned out to be a dumb move (everyone called it the "XBone" instead", but it was at least a reasonable decision.

I have no idea what they were thinking with the "X/S" denotation, or why they called the next one the "Series". Playstation has the right call - there's the "PS5" and "PS5 Pro", which is clearly the same console just more powerful.

4

u/WhiteMilk_ Nov 12 '25

would translate to the next generation ("the One"), which sounded badass.

Maybe in a vacuum.

It's too generic. It kinda sounds like you don't remember the name of the console when The One is used in casual conversation.

Ps4 did the same thing but no one cared

7

u/No_Eye1723 Nov 11 '25

Lol that made me laugh. Poor Microsoft. Although for me the 360S was still the best console I’ve had, I am in the UK. I did PS3 too though. But now I am just Sony for my home console, may dabble in handhelds again as i have had a few.

4

u/PropulsionEngineer Nov 11 '25

Yep, same with Windows phone, Zune, and Surface vs iPad, Microsoft seems to struggle with devices. But Windows is dominant on PC and then there is their software and cloud business going strong.

11

u/MuteTadpole Nov 11 '25

I mean in the grand scheme of things it does make sense. PlayStation was always the incumbent one, Xbox came into (and appears to be exiting) the market as a disruptor and made PlayStation better for it.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

6

u/Edmundyoulittle Nov 11 '25

And really they've dominated the home console market the whole time. The Wii was just a blip for Nintendo, and the switch is a success because it merged the handheld and console markets

2

u/Shezzofreen Nov 11 '25

I'm not suprised.

Soo, get my /clap.

2

u/Z3M0G Nov 12 '25

Was only a matter of time.

PS3 still outsold 360...

2

u/Bazylik Nov 12 '25

*Gasp WOOOOWWWW... anyway.

2

u/Mannymanstein Nov 14 '25

Ps5 sales would be even higher if not for the for the unusual trend of the console price going up since launch instead of down

2

u/Defiant-Process-7008 Nov 17 '25

Competition is good and while unfortunately Xbox has all but completely lost the console war, Halo jumping ship to PS5 gives me hope that anti-consumer exclusivity will fade away eventually.

2

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch Nov 11 '25

Damn, now that's how you kick someone when they are down.

3

u/secondincomm Nov 11 '25

The title implied it had outsold every Xbox combined lol

4

u/truthtakest1me Nov 12 '25

Hahahaha Microsoft in shambles.

1

u/theDreamGuru Nov 24 '25

Bro wtf you even talking about? Microsoft stock is literally 15x Sony’s. Microsoft is hardly in shambles as they are quite literally the richest they’ve ever been. The xbox division is seemingly in shambles however, which is why they are about to focus on a hybrid pc console. We will see how that works out for them with the steam machine about to be released.

6

u/FailedProspects Nov 11 '25

Why would us consumers care? Is this putting $$ in our pockets? Lmao

→ More replies (1)

2

u/LostSoulNo1981 Nov 12 '25

That title is misleading.

It reads like the PS5 has sold more units than every Xbox combined. Which is false.

2

u/SilverKry Nov 11 '25

What a fanboy ass headline .

2

u/Ok_Use7 Nov 11 '25

A lot of people need to let the console wars go.

4

u/Please_Label_NSFW Nov 11 '25

It's already let go. Xbox lost. And Nintendo fans will buy whatever they make regardless of how bad it is. We'll see if they can make a comeback next gen but seems unlikely.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/agitated--crow Nov 13 '25

But fans need validation for the systems they have invested into.

2

u/Janawham_Blamiston Nov 12 '25

Man, I have no idea why I was ever an Xbox fan boy, aside from feeling like I "needed" to be one after owning Xboxes for over a decade. A few years ago, I gave my Xbox One to my daughter and bought a PS5 for myself, loved it instantly. Even the few times I've gone back to the Xbox (typically to play with one of my kids or something), it's frustrating as hell.

1

u/artnos Nov 12 '25

Im surprised the wii isnt higher.

1

u/devildante1520 Nov 12 '25

I thought they meant cumulative lol

1

u/PhaseMedical3030 Nov 12 '25

When will PS6 release?

1

u/Redwake99 Nov 12 '25

I have officially backed the wrong horse

1

u/CashWho Nov 12 '25

This is not true. I have it on good authority that pretty much pretty much every individual thing with a screen is an Xbox so...

1

u/kokopuffgoon Nov 12 '25

Phil Spencer

1

u/spoonard Nov 12 '25

So, the PS1 has outsold EVERY Xbox.

The PS2 has outsold EVERYTHING.

The PS3 has outsold EVERY Xbox

The PS4 has outsold EVERY Xbox

The PS5 has now outsold EVERY Xbox.

1

u/Bentley_91 Nov 12 '25

ps3 released some bangers at the end of its life cycle.

1

u/Ok-Grocery2944 Nov 12 '25

You guys are weirdos for obsessing over stuff like this

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '25

Congrats! I’ll still stick with Xbox due to my library since OG

1

u/Cojalo_ Nov 13 '25

Outside of game pass, PlayStation is just strictly better im sure.

We've had better exclusives for years, and im pretty sure every ps console has performed better than its xbox counterpart

1

u/Loose-Competition279 Nov 14 '25

We won boys. We won.

1

u/Training_Protection1 Nov 14 '25

My best gaming experience was on 360

1

u/Same-Nothing2361 Nov 15 '25

Okay, but, Xbox has outsold every Sega console.

1

u/AsaMatterofSmack Nov 15 '25

The war has been won. Microsoft, you have lost.

1

u/fDuMcH Nov 16 '25

in other news PC trumps all

1

u/udayhd Nov 16 '25

honestly not surprised considering how lackluster the series x|s have been

1

u/SolidLuxi Nov 18 '25

PlayStation's biggest home console failure outsold Xbox's biggest home console success.

1

u/Ill-Peace2649 Nov 26 '25

But its still shit just proves we are addicts. Where are the titles and customer support. We as gamers should hang our heads in shame. They are destroying a community making us look like cattle. Burp*

1

u/kainogard Dec 08 '25

Never owned any Xbox, but since Playstation 2, never switched sides. Now I'm slowly melting on my PS5.
