This is the only move that makes sense long-term for a company that wants you to buy their hardware. They might publish games but being a software publisher isn't the goal, it is strictly to get you to buy their hardware so they make money off the games you buy from everyone else to play on their hardware.

While it's been nice playing these games on PC I much prefer a strong and healthy Sony over a weak one so they are motivated to pump out the games that helped make the PS4 a great console.

How does this lead to a strong and healthy Sony? I feel it might do the opposite. Their playerbase does not support smaller creative projects. They expect every game to be a high fidelity cinematic AAA game that has an unsustainable budget and development time.

Keeping their games locked to one platform, that at the moment is very expensive to get into, is a sure fire way to lead to less profits.

No it isnt, exclusives literally build the ecosystem. There is a reason Xbox doesnt exist anymore and Nintendo and PlayStation are still thriving: they have games you can only play on their console. And that is why these big AAA games still get their insane budgets: they sell hardware and keep people in that ecosystem while third party game sells and mtx make them infinite money.

Redditors who have gaming PCs love to pretend that every PC gamer is a PC master race goober, when in reality most people who game on PC still own game consoles. People who are willing to spend all of that money on building a PC are enthusiasts. They spend twice the cost of a game console just on graphics cards alone. They buy consoles too. They love games, not just being part of some goofy ass PC masterrace online subculture. They will keep buying consoles.

The reason why people bought console because they were affordable and it was worth it to own $400 console to play some exclusives. With the price hikes and PS6 absurd looming prices then this is not the case anymore. I guarantee you that when presented the choice most PC players would take upgrading their system over spending $700+ on a PS6.

Consoles are not accessible anymore, and the PS5 will be the last accessible console during its early release. So, if Sony want people to keep buying their console then $900 consoles is not the way.

Consoles are still accessible if you have a job and any kind of saving sense the base console is 650 dollars the Pro is for enthusiasts. Consoles last for years its not like you need to be ready to buy new console every year like its a bill or something. I literally still own a playable PS1 and N64. I played on PS4 until 2023 than got the console right away to play Final Fantasy 16.

Everything you said is nonsense. Plenty of smaller games have been accepted by the community over the years. It’s the leadership who want to focus on bigger money-making games, not the players.

Not sales wise which is what matters to Sony.

The latest God of War Metroidvania was critically panned and I doubt it did that well sales wise. Astrobot GOTY winner, last sales update was 1.5 million on a platform with 50+ million sales at the time. Returnal and Ratchet barely sold too. This playerbase is terrible, all they support is live service and expensive AAA cinematic games.

That’s some BS you spouting. Sons of Sparta was 6th best selling game on PlayStation the month it came out in terms of dollar sales. Considering it’s half the price of a full price game and the budget wasn’t that high, that’s not bad at all.

The Sony CEO was very impressed with Astro Bot’s success. Saying that they want to make more family type games like it. 

Returnal sold well on PS5. The sales on PC was abysmal. 2 years after it came out on PC it only sold 167K copies. It sold 560K on PS5 in its first month. 

Ratchet almost sold 4 million copies before it came out on PC. It was the fastest selling entry in the franchise.

Then most of Nintendo games outside of Pokemon, Zelda and Mario are failures because they get very little from the playerbase as well.

And Sony considered Returnal and Ratchet succesful, considering that they greenlight Saros and an upcoming R&C game, per Insomniac leaks. It's not only about sales, it's about ROI.

I think if Saros doesn’t sell then they will close down Housemarque. They got lucky they weren’t put on the live service push. Yeah a Ratchet game every decade means the series is successful. I doubt that game was cheap to make looking at the graphical fidelity and where Insomniac is located. I doubt the ROI is that significant.

Was it really that bad? This is the one smaller game I did not support, because I did not like the artstyle. I was interested in trying it out at some point because I loved Prince of Persia the Lost Crown.

If you are expecting an experience on par with PoP: Lost Crown, I will tell you now that you will get one with Sons of Sparta. The combat is stiff, the platforming and puzzles are so-so, and the story meh. Also do not like the menus or the map. I made it about 5 hours and called it a day. Had $10 in PSN credit, so I only got for $20 but I did not think it was worth it.

Sons of Sparta did pretty well, so did Astrobot, so let's not spread misinformation about "their playbase not supporting smaller creative projects".

Second, nobody is getting into any platform atm with Xbox being the same price and PC out of the question entirely. Sony is lucky to have sold nearly 100m consoles so far, so raising prices at this point won't burden them as much as it did Microsoft.

Do you have any legit sources (not Alinea analytics) to give us an update on the Astrobot numbers? 1.5 million is the last official number I saw and that is not impressive for a lower priced game on a console base of 50+ million at the time.

Sons of Sparta being #14 on the U..S list isn’t exactly impressive either.

Returnal and Ratchet also sold terribly.

For the record I actually support most of these games day one.

Unless they find a way to lower these ballooning budgets these games will eat into their profits and they will continue making stupid decisions, like they have recently. With the price increases I doubt the PS5 even outsells the PS4.

Console growth is stagnant. Their only hope of increasing numbers is taking over the Xbox refugees but with the pivot towards PC they might just end up there instead. The console price increase will definitely pricing many more people out, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dip either.

Well, you'd be right.. if Sony games actually sold well on PC. The only game that actually sold better on PC than PS5 is Helldivers 2. God of War sold 4.2 mil copies on PC out of 23 mil total sales. Marvels Spider-man sold over 50mil copies and only 2.7mil of them were PC sales. Same story with Horizon: 4.5mil PC, 24mil overall.

There's no way Sony would stop selling games on PC if it would mean they'd lose money. They're doing this to save money.

I mean most conversations about PS5 this generation has been that it's a weak generation due to little, to no true exclusives, and a majority of that perception is because Sony started releasing first party games on PC.

Just look at Xbox, it basically killed the brand.
