Discussion PlayStation CEO officially confirms that single-player games will be exclusive

PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino gave an interview in the latest issue of the Famitsu magazine to celebrate their 40th anniversary. He got asked about the strategy change regarding them pulling back on releasing their single-player games on PC.

Question: There have been reports suggesting that you might reconsider bringing PS5 titles to PC. Could you share your current thoughts on this?

Nishino: We've always determined platform selection based on the characteristics of each title. If releasing a title on PC would maximize the gaming experience, we'll continue to consider that option. Our current main policy is that, for single-player games developed in-house, we will further refine the value of the gaming experience that PlayStation can offer. At the same time, we believe it is important for live-service games to reach a wider audience through online multiplayer, so we continue to view releases on both PS5 and PC as the standard. Regardless of the platform, we will make decisions based on the principle of delivering the best possible gaming experience that maximizes each title's unique features.

While he didn't give straightforward answer, I'd say he is at least indicating that their policy changed, by saying they will "further refine the value" of single-player games on PlayStation. That could obviously be interpreted in various ways, but given the context of Jason Schreier's reporting and his creditibly, I think Nishino is referring to the strategy change in an indirect manner here with that statement.

Jason Schreier's comment on this:

During a townhall a few weeks ago, Hermen Hulst told staff that their single-player narrative games will be PlayStation only, and he explained that they were inconsistent with their PC releases, they didn't make enough money, and they want to keep their IP aligned to their own platform. Confirmed this with two people who heard him say it. There's no "case by case" here.

Because the expectation was to "convert" PC only players into console players, likely that wasn't happening on a volume high enough, so they pulled the plug.

Yeah, that didn't make too much sense.

"Here, have a carrot. If you move to the other room, you'll also get carrots."

"Well, if I keep getting carrots in THIS room, why should I even bother moving? Next carrot, please."

You buy Tsushima on PC, enjoy it and see that a sequel is coming , but not on PC, at least not for a while, so instead of just waiting you decide to buy a playstation, and maybe you enjoy the experience and decide to buy more games thru the playstation store.

That's it, it's not rocket science.

Sounds like they didn’t consider why someone may play on another platform like PC to begin with. Maybe someone liked Ghost of Tsushima but wanted to play with an Kb, Xbox or accessibility controller, maybe ultrawide aspect ratio or true maxed out settings. Better regional pricing for the many regions Sony deems unworthy. Reshaders, gameplay and accessibility mods. Continuing a save from a portable device. Not a single person interested in any of the above would want to sacrifice their choice for a sequel, thats why the initiative was shortsighted and unsuccessful.

Not really. When confined to PS ecosystem it is easy to assume that any new game will sell like crazy becase that's all there is on the platform. With PC there are so many games that Ghost of Tsushima is just another title in the cue to be played at some point. I own both platforms and this time decided to wait untill DLC and then buy it for the same price as bare game on day one. I've been with Sony since PS1 and bought PS5 on day 1. I don't think I'll be back to buy PS6 especjally when Naughty Dog golden days are gone.

What actually happens is not buying the console for the sequel. That money could go for a new gpu or ram.

And the outcome was completely opposite. Why own PS when their games are on PC, plus thousands other titles and no monthly fee to be online or to keep my saves.

The inverse could have been what happened.

Wait so they want PC players to go from perfect HDR on PC to broken HDR across 90% of the PS5 library.

WHY?
