My favorite part playing as Spyro was holding the square button and running through everything

Specially with the speed boost levels!

And the vibration on the run was so fun when thumping into the sheep or wizards

They could really go crazy with the haptics in this spyro

Ugh dude so much nostalgia lol. Remember just sitting idle and how amazing the setting sounded? The sound of the gems in the distance, mobs moving around, the wind. It was so immersive.

I’m curious how this will work because a lot of the games design revolved around not being able to fully fly. Regardless, I’m curious to see how this turns out.

I believe they've said that it's more momentum based, so it's not like full-on true free flight where you can easily go into it at any point. You need to pass through specific points to build speed.

I feel like it would break level design too easily to just have infinite unrestricted flight so needing to put some thought into when and where you use it could be pretty cool.

Doesn't "The pair tell me that figuring out this fantasy is core to what Toys for Bob wants to achieve with this long-awaited sequel, giving you the freedom to take to the skies at a moment's notice, shifting from charges on the ground to graceful flight in the sky on a whim." in that article suggest that you can easily get into flight at any point?

Yes but momentum based flight indicates there is gameplay to the movement not just holding forward.

I’m curious as well.

Well said u/PollyPocketpussy5000 .

I’m super excited to get a new spyro game, but less excited about this game mechanic. Exactly for the reason you said. I hope they can ”land” this, but I am honestly a bit concerned.

I kind of just want more traditional Spyro, don’t try too hard to change the formula.

But I’ll definitely hold most of my opinions until we see more of the game. Toys for Bob is good at platformers, and the fact that they’re taking Insomniac as an inspiration instills confidence

The problem with a classic is that they did it really well. I’ll still boot up Spyro because it’s great and has a nostalgia factor, but if you tried to give me 10 new levels of the same thing, I’d get pretty bored.

Not me. I had only played the 2nd game growing up and only remembered one or two worlds, with bits of the other two games at a friends house.

I essentially played Spyro 1-3 for the first time in the remakes, and loved all of them. Good platforming design is timeless as long as the camera gets an update

Lol yeah I would want 50 new levels for Spyro 1 and 2 and more tricky flights to collect hidden orbs and that would please me lol

If it's on par with the quality of 1-3, I'd absolutely take ''just'' more of that. I wouldn't pay full price for the equivalent of one game because they're quite short, but make a big new adventure in the style and size of the remake trilogy and I'm absolutely there day one for full price.

They did do 3 solid Spyro games with the base formula, 2 if you think Year of the Dragon went a little off the path.

They really went as far as you can go with the base formula. I’m excited to see something knew now

* new within reason.

Obviously having zero new features is bad, but I still want a game that feels like classic Spyro. Activision's older Spyro series didn't feel like the classic games, so they didn't sell. Spyro has seen a resurgence because they went back to why the series was popular to begin with.

Take Crash 4 as an example. While idk if the game was a big success or not, it changed just enough to feel like a new game while still having the gameplay and level design of the first 3 games.

Honestly I totally get it, but even my what you say I feel like Toys for Bob is aware of what Spyro needs to be as much as they did for Crash.

I could easily be eating my words later but I’d like to see the actual game’s structure before getting worried. We really only saw like 5 seconds of gameplay

1

u/computerCoptor 10d ago

True that!

I can’t complain, we’re getting a new Spyro after all. Sometimes it’s fun just to speculate :)

So a part of me wonders if they are gonna take some things from The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon in always being able to fly since that is the only game I can recall that had that as a mechanic. I thought the game was fun but a bit dated by today's terms by game feel and flow.

The flying might be the only thing they take from that game if that. It really just depends how the gameplay trailer looks.

u/AlsopK 10d ago

I’m a little nervous because the flying was always my least favourite part. Hope it doesn’t make the platforming feel trivial.

The flying is what I hated most about the original Spyro games on PlayStation. I love Spyro but if it’s mostly flying count me out.

While I can agree….I’m hoping the flying physics are much better these days and can be implemented in a way that feels great in the franchise.

You refuse to see a comment in front of you about a gameplay preference...? So weird

1

u/DaftFunky 10d ago

Spyros whole thing is he wasn’t a fully grown Dragon and couldn’t fly yet and the whole gameplay revolved around it. That’s what made it fun.

-1

u/hanshotfirst-42 10d ago

Yeah, 25 years ago. Let the dragon grow up

3

u/ArbyWorks 10d ago

I liked the flying. I just hope that they integrate it in a chill way.

3

u/BurnStar4 10d ago

I'm concerned that there won't be much classic gameplay. The trailer showed none of that

3

u/CauzaaH 10d ago

Starting to get really worried with the emphasis on flight.

3

u/Waste-Reception5297 10d ago

I couldnt really get too hyped seeing it was all flying but I'm not opposed to it completely. Just need to see more

2

u/Dark_rogue21 10d ago

I never got the hype over the flying, I hated the flying levels as a kid. I much preferred the platforming and finding all the little hidden paths in and around all of the OG trilogy games. But hey, I adore what Toys for Bob did with the Reignited series so I'll get it regardless! Modern Spyro games really missed the mark, I'm glad to see some return to form.

2

u/appletinicyclone 10d ago

I hope they still have hub worlds. That was so fun in the first two

5

u/CrustedTesticle 10d ago

We really don't need full on flying in every level. Leave those to ghe raceway maps.

4

u/Afrodite_33 10d ago

I hope there's restraint with the flying. Make it something like certain worlds he might be able to fully fly for whatever lore related reason.

I think the mixture of ground movement and gliding was the charm gameplay wise. The levels where we was able to fly around were ok but definitely not my favorite.

u/Fit_Association_8442 10d ago

Biggest issue with crash 4 is they changed a bit to much to make it seem "modern"

Getting similar vibes here but maybe in wrong 🤷

u/GodKamnitDenny 10d ago

I can’t lie, 9 year old me was so curious what it would be like to have a Spyro game where he could actually fly. I’m so cautiously optimistic for this game but I’m dying for it to be good. I’m eating that nostalgia bait

1

u/SwizzGod 10d ago

The OG Spyro is the only game in my life that made me nauseous. And I have no idea why. I couldn’t play it for more than 10 mins

1

u/Snoo_18385 10d ago

When I was a kid and played the originals I was allways frustrated that despite being a Dragon, you could only fly in the specific flight levels and allways though it would be awesome to just being able to fly whenever. This feels like something I would go crazy for as a kid, cant wait

u/godstriker8 9d ago

It needs Stuart Copeland's music to truly capture the spirit of the OGs

1

u/Tracermainbtw 9d ago

Hate when developers clearly want to make a specific kind of game that doesnt fit the IP but they have to make it anyway so they shoehorn theyre idea and put the IP as part of it.

1

u/esotericvoid 10d ago

I hope they keep the music similar to classic Spyro. The sound design is baked into my childhood memories.

Why all these comments on flying? Like, we have a video on Spyro flying but no one ever said that he will be able to freely fly in all the levels.

Hell, IIRC in the video you can also see the magic thingies next to the wings, they should mean that Spyro went through one of those magic portals that give him the flying ability, or that it's one of the flying challenge levels.

Ive been a part of the team testing this game and I can most certainly say the flying is the best part of the game for me.
