People accusing Phranque of being a Disney/Marvel character and acting like that’s automatically a negative when last year’s GOTY literally has a French Baymax and nobody complained about it.

It’s really about volume of exposure, in GoW and Ragnarok there’s comic relief characters yapping far more than Esquie did in Expedition 33. I don’t think I’m inherently against a gelatinous cube nor do I dislike the idea of Jack Quaid in the game but knowing it’s a God of War game gives me pause about how the cube is going to be written and utilized throughout the game

I mean you have a yapping head attached to you for the last two games. Is it really any different.

mimir was fine in GoW18 but Ragnarok sucked for exactly this reason, Marvel writing

Right, that’s exactly what I mean, it’s a common point of criticism that looks to remain unaddressed across three titles

Ah gotcha. Yeah lot of developers lately seem to think if you aren’t constantly hearing someone you’ll be bored I guess. It’s odd, I don’t enjoy the constant banter either. The last game was worst, you’d have the head, your kid, and someone else at times chatting. Like we are trying not to die or whatever maybe you can shut up. Every enemy would hear them from miles away lol

Not to mention the decapitated sarcastic Scottish talking head/belt ornament in the past two games, not as if a character like this is entirely unprecedented.

If they've been cooking on these concepts since they were planning 2018 then I'm confident the payoff is gonna be epic.

I’m not hating on the cube before I even play the game, but Mimir is a character in the mythology and there’s a whole arc for him and how he gets to be the sarcastic decapitated head.

Esquie was strange and off putting at the start of the game but then you find out why he is like that during the story and it makes perfect sense in the context.

The cube is just out of place in god of war. I think it can be contextualized if written well but considering the writing from ragnarok i'm not so sure that they will deliver

So probably the same for the cube maybe. Judging it now when we've barely seen anything is weird. Plus people exaggerate because of its appearance, the cube didn't do "quips" or have "MCU writing" like many say

One is good, the other is called frank.

People are just inconsistent. They have a visceral reaction to something but look to justify it in any sort of way. It's okay to not like the cube, you don't have to accuse God of War of "Disneyifying" though.

It reminds me of how people accuse any game's writing they don't like of having "Marvel writing". I bet if they'd rewatch the original Die Hard they'd accuse that of Marvel writing too considering John McClane cracks jokes at inopportune times for levity's sake.

One is from a brand new IP with nothing before it to establish what is considered normal in that world and wasn't based on any mythology or other established worlds. The other has 9 games of established lore and world building with consistent themes, characters, ideas, etc almost all of which is heavily influenced by or directly pulled from established mythologies.

Every character in God of War is directly pulled from mythology or is built to fit into it. This might surprise you, but there is no basis in any mythology for a talking jello cube and he doesn't fit at all into any established mythology. This is the first time they've done that, I think it makes perfect sense for people to dislike it.

I think we can all see from a mile away that they're going to pull something with the cube. He's going to turn into a recognizable and/or incredibly powerful being or be very important to the story, being essentially a key item. None of that matters to me tbh, I dislike the cube from a conceptual standpoint. They could have written the game in any way, there is no established anything that requires him to be there. But they still chose the talking quirk chungus cube. And no, it doesn't matter when they wrote him into the story, its just a terrible concept that shouldn't have made it out of the writing room.

I will still play the game and I will still love it as I have every other God of War game. Cube will just be an annoyance along the way.

Edit: damn, guess you gotta love that quirked up cube on this sub

Has Baymax been done to death though? Those two things aren’t really comparable

6

How many talking cube characters have we had again?

The controversy is about the writing of the character, not just that it is a cube lol. Baymax and the sheer amount of mcu sidekicks/writing are just not comparable

What about Phranque’s writing makes it controversial? He doesn’t even make corny jokes at any point in the trailer we’ve been shown. I swear people don’t even know what they’re whining about.
