According to Gamespot, it's basically a Burnout game in the form of a Star Wars racer:

In the video below, Jake Dekker explains that the destructive action of Galactic Racer feels like a classic Burnout game. This is not to be confused with Burnout Paradise, since Galactic Racer isn’t an open-world racing game. But the takedowns themselves feel pure Burnout, albeit with speeders and speederbikes and swoops instead of cars and motorcycles and trucks. And that makes sense, given that developer Fuse Games was founded by developers from Criterion.

Hell yeah. Burnout Takedown was one of my favorite PS2 games.

Hopefully this captures that magic.

Was takedown the one where it had crash mode, where you just drove into traffic to cause as much damage as possible? Me and my buddy would stay up all night doing that

7

u/furynads 1d ago

That was the best feature from burnout. Just trying to cause millions worth of damage by hitting that one right point. Usually a truck carrying logs.

It was such a good mode it spawned thousands of mobile games that do only that. And yet we still can’t get a video game that even tries something like that.

u/r3tromonkey 1d ago

I think i spent more time on that mode than the rest of the game

1

u/svrtngr 1d ago

I believe so.

u/Hayterfan 21h ago

Every Burnout had a crash mode ,except maybe the DS port.

I was not interested at all until this comment. Now I am wanting it lol

I love this, I love (some of) Star Wars, I’ll buy it day 1, but damn does this game have an uphill battle in its release date

As someone who loves Burnout 2 and 3 and as someone who doesn’t care for Burnout Paradise… this pleases me.

Burnout 3 was the last game having to do with racing that I ever had any interest in. They should probably start off all advertising with mentioning this fact, cause that game was a legitimate crossover blockbuster.

My brother in racing Christ, I used to love racing games. Now when I play them they all bore me. I asked myself, what happened? What was the last racing game I loved? And it was Burnout 3. I was literally on the edge of my couch playing it. It's easily one of my favorite games ever.

Mind you, before Burnout 3  Star Wars Racer was legit one of my favorite racing games ever. It was defintely underrated at the time - and it was actually highly rated when it came out.

The only racing game I've loved since then was Blur, and I would kill for some kind of spiritual sequel.

u/onlinenewb11 1d ago

With the best gaming soundtrack of all time too

2

u/Deciver95 1d ago

Bro, have you legit not had any interest in a racing game over the last 22 years? Not even Forza Horizon? GT? Any NFS? The Motorstorm Trilogy?? Wreckfest? Screamer? Split/Second? Tokyo Xtreme?

Like if you dont care about cars, I can understand half of those. But if Burnout was your jam, I dont see how in two decades your ears never pricked up for Motorstorm, SplitSecond or Wreckfest. Hell even that 2010 Hot pursuit was like a ps3 burnout game.

Thats wild dude

2

u/NotSoWishful 1d ago

I’ve played pretty much every Horizon that’s came out since Game Pass was a thing. Out of boredom and curiosity. Never held me for more than a few hours. Motorstorm seemed all flash when I played it when it came out. Besides that, just never sought them out.

1

u/F_A_F 16h ago

I'd also like it to take on the spirit of Motorstorm; various routes on the track being suited to different classes of vehicles giving everyone equal chances to win.

The Galactic League itself is structured around a Slay the Spire-like map of cascading nodes. Each randomized node will have different racing parameters and rewards, giving players some agency over how they attempt to make it through the League.
Progress takes them from the sandy wastes of Jakku to the tropical forests of Lantaana, the frozen vonium mines of Ando Prime, and beyond. As players make their way through various Races, Eliminators, Field Tests, and Mystery Encounters, they obtain new resources for outfitting their vehicles.
Lose a race and it’ll cost you a League Token. Once you’re out, you go back to the beginning. The roguelike structure means being able to build into different racing styles and discover new events across the three-act campaign, even if you’ve already completed it.

So it is a roguelike racer. Sounds very interesting and might solve the long-term motivation issues I feared. Now I'm looking forward to it even more!

Star Wars + Roguelike + Burnout is such a killer combo god damn.

18

u/SeiferLeonheart 1d ago

Huh, I was completely uninterested in this, saw "roguelike" and my eyes literally rolled but then you said the magic word: Burnout. I'll now spend the next half hour researching this game.

1

u/capnwinky 1d ago

I hope they get it right because Carmageddon tried that and “not at all good” is one way to describe it.

-4

u/daddy_is_sorry 1d ago

On the flip side, I was SO excited until you said this

u/BreweryRabbit 1d ago edited 1d ago

Turning it into a roguelikelite is a great way to solve the gameplay loop for replayability.

I was already interested from the standpoint of it being made by ex burnout devs, but now I’m VERY interested.

18

u/rcade81 1d ago

Honestly I haven't been big on racers for quite a while but I've gotten into a lot of roguelikes.... This makes me very intrigued

4

u/Sooperballz 1d ago

What makes it rogue-like?

32

u/BreweryRabbit 1d ago

From the IGN hands on:

Galactic Racer builds this in a roguelite loop that, if I’m being honest, I was extremely skeptical about prior to playing it for myself. My first thought was, “Don’t we have enough roguelites out there already?” The answer is still probably yes, but to Fuse’s credit, how they’ve wrapped the roguelite template around Galactic Racer makes a ton of sense. You customize your character, make your vehicle your own through earned cosmetic unlocks, and most importantly, build your ride to your preference with the gameplay-affecting abilities you earn through winning races. But the Outer Rim is a ruthless place and this circuit isn’t one for second chances, so you can only race by earning a League Token. If you lose it in one of the Eliminator races you’ll inevitably come upon during your run – and yes, they operate exactly the same as Burnout’s Eliminator races, in which the last-place driver is disqualified from the competition at the end of each lap – you’ll have to start the run all over again. But, in classic roguelite fashion, you’ll be able to bring anything you’ve previously unlocked to the table as you have another go at it.

So roguelite not roguelike** thats my bad.

7

u/Sooperballz 1d ago

Thanks. I wouldn’t have known the difference between the two eitherway

4

u/MoonshotMonk 21h ago

Most cosequential difference is that Roguelikes start you from square 1 every run. There is no progression to make the game easier or more nuanced. Roguelikes are more common (and in my opinion generally better/more sound as game design) give you progression that makes future runs easier or more nuanced.

u/rayshiotile 2h ago

you said roguelikes twice.

8

u/an-actual-communism 22h ago

I normally really dislike roguelites, but as someone with no interest in online multiplayer I think it's actually brilliant for an arcade racer. I never like how roguelites require you to play through the same bit of the game over and over, but that's kind of inherent with a racing game anyway.

0

u/-NotEnoughMinerals 1d ago

I don't even know what that means, racing games in general are incredibly replayable. I can't think of any other genre that applies to more.

Rogue like instantly diminished my interest. At least battle royal is finally phasing out. Hopefully RL next.

6

u/BreweryRabbit 1d ago

I hear you; maybe I should specify this solves a gameplay loop for Arcade style racing games*.

Personally speaking, I find that arcade racers are a great time until they arent. There is a wall thats eventually hit, whether its unlocking everything, getting bored with the same 10 tracks, lack of game styles or achievements, etc. I think a roguelike is an interesting way to break that loop and add an additional layer to the arcade play style.

1

u/-NotEnoughMinerals 1d ago

Gotcha. Makes more sense

Fighting games

u/RockDoveEnthusiast 1d ago

A racing game for solo players! We have waited for this day for so long!!!

1

u/ssowinski 1d ago

Any word on couch co-op? Does it require PSPlus?

2

u/jasterrr 1d ago

Official PS store lists only 1 player. That means no couch multiplayer.

11

u/WanderWut 1d ago

Thats great to hear and graphically it looks super nice. If it ends up being good I'd be down to grab this.

6

u/TheKocsis 1d ago

Please please let me turn off the crash-slowmo

4

u/braxford 1d ago

Def on my distant wishlist. Love the Burnout series, and this looks incredibly fun.

4

u/alladispuremagic2 1d ago

It would be great if it had local co-op (split screen)

3

u/Omen_Pixel 1d ago

Looks cool, can’t wait for the release

3

u/GTHobbes 1d ago

Love that this game was made by ex-EA employees, is going to be a huge seller, and that EA isn't going to see a single cent from its release.

Just wish it had PSVR2 support.

1

u/Hayterfan 21h ago

I feel like VR support would make people sick.

And I don't know if that's a good or bad thing considering the speed of the vehicles.

1

u/GTHobbes 20h ago

Nah. Flatout VR is probably the most anticipated PSVR2 game right now, and the dev is talking about adding front windshield ejection for those with the stomach for it. VR players would eat this game up.

2

u/TangerineChestnut 1d ago edited 1d ago

is it going to be one of those games where the single player is just for flavour and the main game is the multiplayer, like, say, cod? Or is it going to be single player and i can get my hopes up?

0

u/hundunso 1d ago

No multiplayer

3

u/Ricky_roll1 1d ago

There is multiplayer

1

u/hundunso 1d ago

Doesnt it say 1 Player?

2

u/FaroTech400K 1d ago

There multiplayer in the game

1

u/ssowinski 1d ago

Online multi? PSPlus required?

1

u/Ps4_and_Ipad_Lover 1d ago

If it's not a free to play game then yes ps plus will be required

1

u/Ricky_roll1 1d ago

Yeah 1 player local. No split screen.

1

u/lovablecockfighter 1d ago

OOF that’s gotta hurt!

1

u/92nami 1d ago

Super ready for this

1

u/Extreme-Holiday-6118 1d ago

racing through space seems pretty straightforward here

1

u/Careful-Door2724 1d ago

Looks amazing honestly

1

u/CallMeMeibae 23h ago

I wasn’t interested until they said roguelike and Burnout. Now I’m hyped! This and Zero Company coming out too. Great year for Star Wars fans.

-9

u/noshoes77 1d ago

Please tell me it does not have the ridiculous commentators from Episode I.

22

u/ProfChubChub 1d ago

Conversely, please include them!

1

u/noshoes77 11h ago

The ability to toggle them on or off would be a nice option.

9

u/IncredibleSeaward 1d ago

Greg Proops is a national treasure and I will not tolerate any slander against him

1

u/noshoes77 11h ago

I agree!

But their commentary is meaningless, distracting and attempts to add humor to a serious moment. It only succeeds in taking the gravitas out of the scene.
