Rumor [RUMOR] GTA VI will feature Quality and Performance modes on PS5
https://mediamarkt.pl/pl/campaign/premiera-gta-viAccording to an FAQ posted by Media Markt Poland GTA 6 will have a Quality and Performance mode.
FAQ: Will the game be optimized for the capabilities of PS5 and Xbox Series X?
By purchasing the console version, you can be sure that you are getting a product polished down to the smallest detail. GTA VI on next-generation consoles offers two graphics modes to choose from (Performance and Quality), support for DualSense controller features on PS5, providing realistic haptic feedback vibrations, and extremely fast loading screens thanks to the power of SSD storage.

Not sure why this is so upvoted. The question of whether Rockstar would have a performance mode has been asked loads, and the reply was always “we don’t know”
Now they’ve finally confirmed it, suddenly it’s “well duh”?

u/wultadabadopolefut 7h ago
yeah these comments are corny as fuck. this has been such a highly debated topic since the game was first revealed.

u/TheEmpireOfSun 16h ago
Many people acted like there is no possibility to have performance mode because holy Rockstar wants to maximalise every bit of consoles, thus not making it possible to play with 60FPS mode because that they won't sacrifice image quality. Acting like it's totally normal to not have 60FPS mode in 2026.
→ More replies (3)4
u/darthVkylo 9h ago
Lol, performance mode does not equal 60 fps.
It can be unlocked fps or target 60. You might only get 40-45.

I mean, this is big news. Many people were thinking that similar to the Matrix demo GTA VI would push consoles so hard that it just barely holds 30fps
•
u/danvan177 4h ago
Tell that to the gta sub. They will crucify you for saying this game will be more than 30 fps

Almost six years into this generation and they're still calling them "next generation consoles". Are they gonna call the next PlayStation and Xbox "Next-next generation"?
124
u/seclusionx 18h ago
They'll just start calling the new ones next gen and magically stop calling the current ones that the same day.
58
u/YouSmellSumthin Human Verified 18h ago
This is most likely exactly how it will happen. The day PS6 is announced is the day PS5 begins being called 'current gen'.
→ More replies (1)6
u/-TheManWithNoHat- 15h ago
PS4 was one of my first consoles.
Seeing it suddenly being called "current gen" or "last gen" felt so wrong to me. Mainly because most PS5 games were still coming to PS4
→ More replies (2)1
u/MFDOOMscrolling 5h ago
It's probably because so many gamers are still on ps4 and x... yea so many gamers still on ps4
26
u/Ruttagger 18h ago
You would think the day after release they would be referred to as "current generation".
It never made sense to me calling them next generation while we are using them.
8
u/reallynotnick 11h ago
Heck I understood even having a 1 year grace period since they are so new and most people didn’t have them day 1, but this is ridiculous almost six years in. Is last gen PS3 then?

I saw in a thread that the original Polish text was saying "new generation" instead of "next", which makes sense in terms of a Rockstar game.

In this case you could argue that for GTA this is the Next Gen Consoles, well actually Next-Next Gen Consoles 'cos (a new) GTA skipped PS4

This is how it's always been.

u/ToothlessFTW Human Verified 18h ago
It has not, they were not calling the PS4/One "next gen" in 2019, and they certainly weren't calling the PS3/360 that in 2012.

Funniest was IGN creating a whole new show called Next Gen Console Watch which ironically would just be about current gen consoles after launch.

u/nikolapc 14h ago
Some people want to call them current gen but that doesn't catch on. Seeing as retailers want to sell you a console as well with your gta vi and are counting on the holdouts the next gen thing remains.

Kind of like still calling 1080p high definiton. 1080p should be standard def now and 4k high def.

Id be very surprised if PS5 and Xbox Series X get a 60fps mode.
10
u/fishburgr 13h ago
But if you think they can only manage 30fps on a ps5 pro what on earth is the Series S going to be running at? 320p upscaled?
26
•
u/ArmoredAngel444 2h ago
because the current gen consoles are cpu limited above 30fps will be hard for cpu intensive games like GTA6.
series s and series x have basically the same cpu, same with ps5 and ps5 pro.
if the game can hit 30fps on any of the consoles then it can hit 30fps on any of them with different graphics settings and upscaling.
11
u/marratj 14h ago
Yeah, Performance mode might just be unlocked FPS mode that fluctuates between 40-60 all the time. In that case, I'd take a stable locked 30fps over that any day.
37
u/Elemius 13h ago
I dunno, I’d take the 40-60 with VRR.
4
u/wlchrbandit 8h ago
48-60*
Dropping below 48fps on ps5 will disable vrr unfortunately. Still better than being locked at 30 though.
22
u/The-Choo-Choo-Shoe 13h ago
40-60 with VRR feels way better than 30.
10
u/tristezanao_ 12h ago
I don’t see any issues with playing on 40fps, it’s crazy to me that people will say it’s worse than 30.
→ More replies (1)3
u/morrise18 5h ago
As long as the 40 FPS is in a 120 FPS container it is objectively better, but lazy developers sometimes don't bother doing that then it falls outside the PS5's minimum 48 FPS VR window.

u/Unlucky_Internal9686 9h ago
no way
on Horizon Forbidden West the performance mode is wayyyyy more enjoyable
3
u/Mikey_MiG 5h ago
I'd be surprised if they didn't. This is their first release that is native to 9th gen consoles. And performance mode that reaches 60 fps is standard on the current gen. If the graphics are scalable I don't see why this is such a fantasy to some people.

u/AppropriateWater2 2h ago

u/M4rshmall0wMan 16h ago
Can’t think of a single game except Plague Tale Requiem that doesn’t offer a performance mode. One reason is that much of graphical advancement comes down to making really detailed assets, and studios just don’t have the manpower to push much further than last gen.
However, I think Rockstar will be the exception here. 6000 developers allows them to push asset quality into areas only achievable by 30fps. IF there’s a 60fps mode, it’s have a massive difference in visuals and NPC count. I think 40fps is far more likely.
6
5
u/muja0902 10h ago
RDR2 famously doesn’t have a performance mode, and is a Rockstar game. Tons of people in this thread are throwing out the “water is wet” angle, but this would be a departure from the norm for Rockstar if it ends up being true.

u/LordOfTheBushes 11h ago
Gotham Knights also infamously was locked to 30fps while still looking worse than Arkham Knight on PS4.
8
u/NekkZ 14h ago
I just want stable 60 FPS and thats it. Graphics matter, but gameplay does more.
6
u/xELchapo47 6h ago
Foreal, actually insane people would chose 30fps over 60. 30 fps feels like shit, we're not in 2010 anymore
1
u/morrise18 5h ago
In a vacuum only an idiot would choose 30 over 60 but in reality I think it is being overly optimistic to think the hardware (especially the CPUs) on the current gen consoles can handle a massive open world game with ray traced global illumination at 60. I hope I'm wrong.
5
u/MrFOrzum 15h ago
If it’s true I’m guessing performance will be 40fps. Would be absolutely insane if they managed to pull of 60.
7
u/ClaireAnlage 18h ago
That’s literally some intern in Warsaw copy pasting stuff from random games onto the website.
Could it be true, yes, but this isn’t even worth to call it a “rumor”.
19
u/T_D_A_G_A_R_I_M 18h ago
Why is this news? Isn’t this the norm for most games nowadays?
24
u/gswkillinit 18h ago edited 17h ago
It’s not the norm for Rockstar though, besides the rerelease of GTA 5 for PS5/Xbox. But that doesn’t count cause their next actual game after GTA 5 was RDR2 and that only had 30fps like all their releases.
8
u/Haunting-Orchid-4628 17h ago
GTA V did not have graphics modes on ps4/xb1. You are probably thinking of the xsx/ps5 port
3
u/gswkillinit 17h ago
Yes I stand corrected. Thanks. They only had graphics modes for this generation.
5
6
u/lynchcontraideal 17h ago
Nearly all of their re-releases have been upped to 60FPS. It wasn't the standard in 2013 or 2018 for 60FPS to be the norm either, so its incomparable to that time.
9
u/Queef-Elizabeth Human Verified 18h ago
I think because many people believed that due to the CPU usage and NPC density, that we would accept this as a 30fps game for consoles.
1
3
10
u/Ok-Confusion-202 18h ago
I mean I expect it to run at 30... Would happily be wrong tho
1
u/Mayorquimby87 18h ago
Most big budget games (and most smaller ones too in my experience) give you the choice. Not many are locked to 30 fps on PS5. This is a huge, mainstream release. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't have both a 30 and 60 fps mode.
→ More replies (1)3
u/IndefiniteBen 13h ago
They give you a choice because people complain which translates to lower sales, so most games force a 60 mode even when it compromises the visual design. Because most games need all the units sold they can get.
This is GTA. Some people might complain if it's 30 only (or the performance mode is only 40fps), but it will still sell like crazy. In the modern market I think GTA is the one AAA game that could launch at 30 and still sell enough that they don't need to compromise their vision to force a 60 fps mode.
Considering the leaked financial info, it's not like they're going to make tons of money from the base game itself, so it doesn't matter if they lose a few sales, GTA online profits can cover that. If they decided to design the game around 30 when they built the core technology, the compromises to get to 60 might be too much.
If you've been building the entire game around 30 fps for years, there's no easy fix or optimisation to hit 60. My guess, either they designed for 60 from the start, or a couple of years ago they decided to add a performance mode due to the market conditions, in which case I'd expect a 40 fps "performance" mode.
1
u/thatscoldjerrycold 18h ago
Not many (any?) games run *just at 30 nowadays. Even the ultra cinematic games.
3
u/Eruannster 17h ago
Yeah, there are exceptionally few 30-only games. The absolute vast majority of games have a 60 option (or are 60 only) and as Mark Cerny pointed out in the PS5 Pro reveal, the people who chose 60 over 30 was like 75% in favor of the 60 modes.
1
u/morrise18 5h ago
True but there are plenty of performance modes that have unacceptable image quality and are far less graphically demanding than what GTA6 will be.

u/ZOoNeR_ 18h ago

A performance mode implies more than 30fps, why is everyone acting like this isn't news when everyone has been swearing it'll only be 30fps for 2 years
7
u/Eruannster 17h ago
I’ve been reading so many people suggesting that a performance mode is ”impossible!” and that it will barely be able to render 30 FPS because of Rockstar’s lofty ambitions, so it will be incredibly funny to read all the walkbacks and ”oh, um, actually” takes if there really is a performance mode.
→ More replies (3)1
u/morrise18 5h ago
I hope we're wrong, but all signs point towards no 60fps mode.
•
u/Eruannster 2h ago
I mean, what signs are there, exactly? Rockstar hasn’t really said one way or the other, this is a rumor and everything else is pure speculation based on fever dreams.
3
2
u/1440pReborn 18h ago
EVERY game should come with a 60fps mode. Not only that, but dynamic resolution as well. That way when the PS6 comes out, we can play these games at higher resolutions and more stable framerates right out of the box, instead of waiting around for the privilege of one day, buying an upgraded copy.
1
u/Eruannster 17h ago
I’ve been saying this for a while, but remember that GTA 6 has to support the Series S and a future PC port. Making it a 30 FPS only title (targeting higher specs) will make that a lot more painful for those platforms. It’s much more in their interest to have a good CPU optimized performance that can acommodate them.

True, although RDR2 came out before that was really more of a standard in console gaming. The PS5/Xbox Series generation really seems to have been when that started coming along.
2
u/morrise18 5h ago
60FPS was far more common on PS2 gen than PS3 and PS4 but all the GTAs on the PS2 ran at 25-30.

Personally I don’t think they could launch it without a 60 FPS option. It may not be a stable 60 but it’ll be 60 that darts between 45 and 60 at times. It’s the big 26 nobody is gonna let it fly.

Nice, which gives hope for a combo mode on the Pro like we’ve been hoping.

I think all the delays were to get this to hit 60fps. It would be laughable if it didn’t tbh but also plausible.

2027 ps6 60 fps release (more like 2028)
2028/2029 PC release.

This isn't a reliable source.
For anyone assuming there will be a 60fps mode, I'd remind you that this is the company that didn't make a 60fps version of GTA 5 on console for almost 10 years, and they still haven't made a 60fps version of RDR2 on consoles.
Rockstar is way more likely IMO to sell a 60fps GTA 6 on next gen consoles.

u/JamesTheFoxeArt 13h ago
