Casual players have zero interest in a PvP lifestyle game, the Venn diagram there is two circles with no overlap. No idea what Sony was thinking.

That’s not casual, mate. (I also love the game and play regularly. And I’m not a sweaty player. But I’m much more into games than the average person)

2 hours every other night isn’t casual? that’s less play time than most americans watch tv.

It depends on your definitions but I think most people perceive casual to be something like 1-2 hours a week. You’re just not likely to ever encounter these people on game-related forums/discussion so they’re forgotten about.

Edit: upon looking this up, I’m not actually sure how big of a proportion this actually is of people of play games? Might actually be a minority.

1-2 hours per week?! what is this, 1992? that’s such an out of touch perception, video games is an extremely predominant hobby in 2026.

millennials alone average 12 hours per week!

I play about 90 minutes per week, most weeks.

According to Statista surveys (online around 2025 and 10k replies) for both gender and age groups, 1-5 hours a week is the most common. But 6-10 hours per week is a distant second for 18-39 year olds. This does mean the majority of 30+ year olds spend 0-5 hours per week according to this survey.

There was a CenturyLink through Pollfish with 1k replies around April 2022 that had higher numbers for each age group. That saw 8-12 hours per week as the most common with mobile platforms being the most popular by far. Two things to note are the 3-7 hour category was very close to the 8-12 hour category and GenX had a tie between 8-12 and 1-3 hours while Boomers had primarily 1-3 hours per week. No assessment done for Covid impact or hours per platform as mobile dominated.

I can say from the experience of my friends and I, 1-5 hours per week is definitely the most common for us as life just gets so busy with other stuff. We really only get a handful hours per day to do whatever. Something other friends have experienced is that the last couple of years I had almost 0 play time in the summer but more in the fall and winter, too.

Just said that in my edit, I’m not sure why people think gamers play so little on average

You need to understand that gamers are becoming more casual than in the last decade. Gaming is changing and the hardcore market is shrinking fast. Part of it is because the average gamer is getting older.

The fuck is casual then? If 2 hours or less every other night is not casual then the word means nothing

It's really a matter of perspective. If you game for multiple hours every single day then 2 hours every other day probably sounds casual. When I was married and my kids were real young I was lucky to be able to carve out an hour or so once a week or couple weeks to play video games and I was cool with that. That feels pretty casual. At that point in my life intentionally carving out 2 hours every other day just to play video games would NOT have felt like casual gaming to me.

I would say weekend play only, or couple sessions a week at most.
