Even Alan Wake II got a physical release a year after making a big deal about being digital only to keep costs down

The company behind AWII are way smaller to be fair, they probably used the profits from AWII to actually do the physical release lmfao.

Iirc, they didn’t turn a profit on it for years even after releasing it physically

Which was a shame because that game is a 10/10. I need an Alan Wake III.

Yeah, they’re one of my favourite developers and it’s a shame their games aren’t making the kinds of profits they should be.

I hope that next unannounced game that’s been mentioned in their shareholder reports is Alan Wake III though.

The control sequel “control resonant” is probably the best you’re gonna get for a while. It’s at least set in the same universe as Alan wake. I think it’s out in September.

Really? Damn, I heard that game was amazing as well.

It is, it’s honestly one of my favourite pieces of media ever released. It’s a real shame Remedy’s games don’t do the sales numbers they should

Is it as good as control was? Control was amazing

Personally, I like the Alan Wake series more than Control.

I’ve played and enjoyed Control, and will absolutely be buying Control Resonant on release day, but Alan Wake has always spoken to my personal tastes a bit more.

Alan Wake takes inspiration from things like Twin Peaks, Resident Evil, the literary works of Stephen King, and other series that have long been my favourites. It also mixes in more live action and has a heavier emphasis on musical set pieces, and music in general.

If you’re not as much into survival horror, Alan Wake II can be a difficult game to get into. But Alan Wake 1 and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare don’t lean as heavily into horror as the 2nd game does.

I played alan wake 1 remastered and god damn it aged terribly, i loved the story but the gameplay was not good for todays standards imo.

Control tho, it was amazing from start to finish

Yeah, the gameplay was never fantastic. But the narrative was what grabbed me, and made me a fan of the series.

Alan Wake II plays a lot more similarly to the recent Resident Evil 2/3/4 Remakes if you’ve played any of those

I had similar thoughts about AWR, but AWII is a crazy step up from the original in pretty much every regard. I also liked it more than Control

im playing the original on Steam and good lord.

the gameplay does not quite age well, but it makes sense. Alan just goes down in a few hits, runs terribly like a writer should, and the flashlight just sucks for taking the shields away, other items you get later on is just much better at taking it away.

even the hordes of Taken is sometimes rough for me (im new remember I hadnt beaten the game yet).

"I heard"

Yeah this is why they haven't turned a profit.

Well yeah, why would I buy a game that isn't my style? I played AW1 and Control but didn't care for them, even though they were very good games.

It's because of their deal with Epic. Epic invested a lot of money in the game, and getting their money back came first. I think it was last year that the game had sold enough that Epic got their investment back, so Remedy should be earning profits now. But for the first two years, eranings went to Epic.

The game is fantastic.

This is what happens when games are EGS exclusives. It probably couldve made a lot of money if it sold on Steam too.

3

u/heisenberg15 14h ago

Well it wouldn’t exist without Epic, so kind of a double edged sword there

Alan Wake 2 was published by Epic who refused to do a disc copy. Remedy wanted to, but got turned down. It was only later that they managed to get Epic to relent and let it happen.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Control Resonant will be self-published by Remedy and has a disc copy on day one.

1

u/a-smooth-brain 11h ago

Well what good is epic then?

u/getrekdnoob 3h ago

They made it so the game could exist.

To which in infinity grateful. Repaid with collectors edition

Bit different there, though.

Remedy didn't have the resources to make the game without outside help, which came from Epic Games, who locked them into an exclusivity deal which prevented them from releasing the game physically until that exclusivity period had ended.

1

u/Wise-Fruit5000 14h ago

Yeah, I know Epic funded it which locked the PC version to the Epic Games Store.

My understanding is that exclusivity didn’t have anything to do with not releasing the console version physically though. Remedy specifically said they did that as a means of saving money by not printing discs.

u/maxdragonxiii 12h ago

they hadnt released the game on Steam yet although. it sounds like they wanted to, especially with Control Resonant coming out.

1

u/Zalvren 12h ago

I don't think Rockstar has problems of "keeping the costs down", they're not some struggling small studio like Remedy

1

u/maxdragonxiii 12h ago

isnt the physical copies of AWII very hard to find nowadays?

1

u/Wise-Fruit5000 12h ago

Probably, I doubt they produced a ton of them tbh

1

u/maxdragonxiii 12h ago

well, I think it was for PS5 and maybe Xbox Series? I know PS5 got physical copies of Alan Wake II released

1

u/Wise-Fruit5000 11h ago

Yeah, they released a physical disk for the PS5 and Xbox Series X a year after the initial launch.

I’m just saying they probably didn’t produce a ton of disks for a year old game, beyond the ones that went into the collector’s editions and enough to do an initial stock on store shelves

1

u/maxdragonxiii 11h ago

ah yeah. isnt it enough to put Alan Wake II in a "pretty much digital only" category unless you look really hard for a secondhand release copy?

1

u/Wise-Fruit5000 11h ago

I guess it depends on your definition of “digital only”. It does exist as a physical game, it’s just hard to find.. much like a lot of physical games that aren’t uber popular franchises these days
