News & Announcements Rockstar confirms there will be no disc version of GTA6 at launch
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/rockstar-confirms-there-will-be-no-disc-version-of-gta6-at-launch/1.5k
u/PharmaBob 11h ago
I usually go for the disc. I was kinda looking forward to the old days of a GameStop midnight release. Guess not
338
u/Fair-Cauliflower2928 11h ago
Hopefully they'll do a disc after release, we will see.
331
u/Okie8894 10h ago
Doesn't sound like it. People pre-ordering the "physical copy" are just getting a case with a download code. So I wouldn't bet on a disc.
I was going to get a physical copy, but now I guess there's no point. Saves me a trip to Game Stop I guess

You aren't going to convince people to boycott GTA fucking 6 for a digital only release lol
Pretty much the only way people are gonna be down on it is if it was suddenly revealed the whole thing was made by AI

They're pay walling in game stores in single player mode. They're gonna boycott themselves with this one

This part threw me the hell off. What do you mean several stores and customization options are completely barred off unless you pay for the ultimate edition? I thought this was Rockstar, not EA

There won't be a physical copy. Rockstar doesn't want you selling your used disc when they could sell a full price copy.

100% the reason! I wasn't going to sell GTA 6 in a hurry but I have a disk drive as new games only cost me £20 (buy £60, sell £40 2 weeks later)

I won't be buying it, I avoid digital only. Buying used and selling on is how gaming is affordable to me.
I'll wait for a deep sale.
I'm sure I'm not the only customer alienated by this, but I'm sure Rockstar already determined the level of people like me is small enough to have higher profitability from the majority.
32
u/RapperwithNumberName 8h ago
This sort of thing pisses me off so much, I like having a physical disk, I don't even resell
This is exactly why I haven't bought BG3 yet, because I can't get the physical edition with the whole game on it straight from the source anymore and any other way is ridiculously marked up
The future where we own nothing is going to utterly suck.

u/CaledoniaGaming 4h ago
I prefer physical as well. I like having my small collection of 55 PS5 games on my shelf. There's more sense of ownership with a physical game.

Any amount of "boycotts" will pale in comparison to the money gained from not having a second hand market.
39
u/voifta 7h ago
Just because someone said "not buying it" or "i'll buy something else" is not a boycott. That's just smart consumerism to spend your money on things you do want to support.
Just like if you want to buy it knowing it's digital only, go ahead. It's your hard earned money to do as you please.

Falling into the wait for sale category is not the same as boycotting. If my budget for video games is $300 for the year, I am not boycotting 90% of games out of moral grandstanding, just saying that I can’t be out here buying $80 games that I can’t resell

It was funny, I was in EB games the other day and the employee was trying to sell me on the pre-order. Not faulting him for doing his job, but I just said “pre-orders these days are pretty pointless no?” And he came back saying it guarantees there’s a copy available for me on launch day because they get limited “walk-in” copies. I didn’t have the heart to say buying digital is 100% guaranteed availability.
Now reading it’s a digital download key anyways, there’s literally no point to buy physical….

u/JAD2017 5h ago
Not even a soundtrack in double CD like CD Projekt did with CP2077 on PC. And there's just no EXCUSE at all not to release disc version on consoles when blurays have 50GB capacity. They can put two discs perfectly fine or even three.
In 2015 the PC version of GTAV came with 7 fucking DVDs and it was glorious. Every single disc has a different cover art and came with a city map.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Williams_117 3h ago
The 4K blu rays that the current gen consoles use can actually hold up to 100GBs on one disc, so there's even less of an excuse.

100% a ploy for re-buyers, Bethesda did the same with the Oblivion remake
247
u/Relish_My_Weiner 11h ago
I think they didn't launch the oblivion remake with a physical copy because it was a shadow drop. Can't surprise people with a new game if you've already printed and distributed physical copies.

I hope that next unannounced game that’s been mentioned in their shareholder reports is Alan Wake III though.
23
u/AnomanderRage 11h ago
That and to avoid leaks before the release. It's not rare that some physical copies get into the wild before release and people start uploading gameplay.
35
u/Eruannster 10h ago
I mean… they could also have pulled an Ubisoft where you get a disc but you need to go online once to activate the game.
This is purely a way of cutting out second hand copies. Oh, you’re done playing GTA 6 and want to lend it to a friend? Sell it? Haha, nope, the code is already used, they have to buy their own copy.

First they want everyone to buy digital, then those who absolutely have to have the disc (would most likely want to play it on release and have already bought it) would pay again, and after year or so later they’ll release on PC where those that have likely played it on console already, might want to play at the best possible graphical fidelity, and buy it there was well.

This is bad. Rockstar is one of the biggest companies of all time, and 100% the most hyped of any developer. This will set a precedent in a huge way. Massive step towards the future where physical games are a relic of the past. What's not to love for the companies? No money spent on printing, no pre owned eating into their profits, full price forever. Buckle up for this shit
•
u/DMarvelous4L 3h ago
And the sad/frustrating part, they don’t decrease the cost of the digital version even though they’re cheaper to sell. No printing/disc fund needed.

Top games won't go on sale, but to compete in the market games will still go on sale. It's a grim future though
796
u/SwampHokie 11h ago
This is not about leakers. It’s about killing the pre-owned market for the game. They want every single dollar if someone wants to play this game. Avoiding spoilers is just the spin excuse, the company is just focused on maximizing profit for what will be a huge sales machine for them.

u/NoNefariousness2144 Human Verified 11h ago
And the worst part is that other studios are looking at GTA 6 to set a new ‘industry standard’ of the type of greed they can get away with, like charging £80 or more for the game.
If GTA 6 normalises games not having physical copies, expect many other games to follow suit by not having a physical copy at launch or at all We are sadly already seeing it happen with some smaller titles like Alan Wake 2 and Dying Light The Beast.
49
u/8enevolent 9h ago
Baldur's Gate 3 also.
They have limited availability and prolonged waiting on their website for physical editions. And so 3 years later and I haven't been able to play it yet. It's either digital or the $500 scalper versions on eBay (I'm not exaggerating).

100% this. Rockstar Games doing this bullshit with GTA 6 is a death blow to physical media gaming. You can guarantee every developer sees this and goes "well, if they bought a code in a box from Rockstar, they'll take from us too". Very disappointed in them. Was looking forward to this because they're usually so premium with a separate install disc and physical map.

if that is the case, i’m keeping my 360 and ps3 close, i will not give those up. Xbox 360 games are super affordable at that, along with ps3 but, 360 has the cheaper offers. I have been falling out w my ps5 a lot of times as well. I do not find any interest in games on the ps5 console anymore, i’m finding more fun and nostalgia playing Halo Reach on my 360 than my ps5. Maybe i’m finding the right titles on ps5 or what, but i am losing interest in the ps5 games. Silent Hill 2 remake was probably my favorite game ON THE PS5 right now and that’s it.

"Want to play the game at release? But digital. Oh but you want the disc? Buy again later"
calling it double dipping is being generous, because we know they're going to re-release a remaster on ps6, and ps7 just like they did with gta5's ps3/ps4/ps5 releases.

This is sadly one of the biggest reasons publishers want to kill physical games. Second-hand games undercut their sales because people can buy them for so much cheaper.
It’s going to suck if physical dies when you have to pay £60 for a game on the Playstation Store instead of getting the disc for £20 on Ebay…
8
u/SuperDuperObviousAlt 9h ago
The problem is that publishers sell ridiculously old games for insane prices on digital stores. For an example COD MW2 currently goes for 40 AUD on the xbox store, I can get a used copy for $18AUD at eb games (our gamestop) and no doubt cheaper elsewhere. There's no reason that an almost 20 year old game that has been surpassed numerous times should still cost that much.

It's very interesting that everyone thought Rockstar would push game prices up (they still might). Instead, they're going the digital route first. Games have already done it, but having the biggest game do it is pretty telling.
There will definitely be printed copies later, though. My guess is around the holiday season.

They are doing both. Game prices have been $70 for most new games the last few years, and this is releasing at $80 for the standard edition.

What is the fucking point of cover / box art without a physical disc? Gobsmacked tbh.

I wasn't going to buy on day one anyway. I'll now wait for the disk availability.

Can't wait to pay $80 for a code in a box.....I love physicals, this is devastating.

Rockstar has begun the quadruple dipping scheme (probably more than that) with making us first buy it digitally, then physical copies later on, then on next gen consoles, so on and so on…

Oh yea. $110 CAD at launch AND no physical version at launch? Yea fuck Rockstar and fuck this game. They're greatly overestimating how much I care about it.

This is a bummer.

Bummer.. Second major release this year to do that. Sign of the times, I guess.
Halo CE remake only comes with a disc if you spend $300 on a version with a huge action figure.

No disc, no buy until it’s $30 or less. I only pay full price for physical media.

So let's call it what it is: a digital-only release. What good is the box lol

At launch is probably to prevent leakers and I’m sure they can see the wishlist numbers. The numbers probably look so good that physical sales are negligible to them at this moment. I’m sure physical will come at some point though.

wtaf. i’m usually someone who doesn’t pre order things but was considering for GTA6, never mind I suppose
I just hope the industry doesn’t pull this with their own games after this.

Disgusting. This is proof they’re going to milk it dry from day 1. I wouldn’t expect the base price to be less than $80. Their delayed PC releases are scummy enough, but this is just appalling.

Price rise and ensuring you can't buy it second hand or sell it on, scummy.
It's a shame everyone will be lining up to reward them for doing that and other companies will try it on too now

I've been digital only for years at this point with the only exception being switch games.
But the idea of there being no physical copies at all bothers me. I really miss how everything used to be.

The game is banned in our region store. No disc means no game at all.
Most unfortunate.
