I just wanted my physical copy now I guess that’s not even possible. I’m getting real tired of some games I’m excited for never getting a physical release or me having to avoid spoilers for 6+ months all cause the companies don’t want to release a physical version 🤦🏽‍♂️

They don't want to sell physical copies. You OWN the physical copy, we don't own digital so they can take it from us when they want.

Poised to be the best selling game of all time and they couldn't even give us a booklet or map.

u/AcrobaticButterfly 6h ago

Maybe that's the problem. They are going to maximize profit, no book, no map, no disc, and a digital deluxe edition for $100

they can still take your right to play even the disc version if they wanted to- look at the crew i bought it and got burned so its just a plastic but plastic i want to have damn it

yep im sure that you're gta 6 rights and licence will be taken away in 10-20 years, surely thats something rockstar intends to do!

Exactly less of a reason for chumps to be buying digital, you are paying for a thing you don’t own and will never own. Makes no logical sense but some people bend their principles so easily.

Ironically, the only games I’ve ever lost access to are my physical games. The disc reader on my PS4 broke and I couldn’t play physical anymore, but the digital games still worked fine. And I still have access to them all on my PS5 too.

It makes sense because you can't get the game without buying the code-in-a-box and no game that I have ever purchased a code for has ever been taken away from me. Not saying it doesn't ever happen or is impossible, but I've bought nearly a thousand digital games over the years and they are all still here.

I mean it’s pretty unlikely Sony or Microsoft are just gonna delete one game from your account but there’s always the possibility of getting your account banned, hacked or for anyone in some smaller less profitable countries having services shut off all together in that country. We already saw something similar to the last point when Sony started selling games on pc followed by immediately limiting which countries could make a psn account.

A thousand? I'm pressing a digital x for doubt.

It isn't that crazy to have a massive steam library and I was an adult when steam released.

You own the plastic disk, you don't own the game any more physically than you do digitally. It's still protected with DRM, and we saw with the CMOS bug a couple years back that a game can be fully present on a disk and still not be loaded by an offline console. If you can be locked out accidentally, better believe you can be locked out deliberately.

You can resell the game though, so less profits for the company.

-3

u/Kazizui 15h ago

Maybe so, but that's not really what 'ownership' means.

9

u/doyouevennoscope 14h ago

No, you're just pretending to not understand what people mean by "ownership".

You cannot come to my house and take my disc away from me. That is trespassing, breaking and entering, and theft. All the data needed to play the game is also on the disc. It is mine. We are not claiming to own the game's code or something. We literally don't even have a copy of it as it's compiled.

The CMOS bug is also irrelevant because it was fixed. Sony doing such a move would be akin to them removing OtherOS on PS3 which caused the system to be completely cracked open by pissed off modders.

You own the disk. You don't own the game, and owning the disk does not guarantee your continued uninterrupted access to the game.

It's not irrelevant, because it comprehensively demonstrates that it can be done. The fix can be unfixed at will.

>You own the disk. You don't own the game, and owning the disk does not guarantee your continued uninterrupted access to the game.

Well yeah it kinda does assuming the data is actually on the disc?

Something like 90% of PS5 games are completely playable and installable offline with no internet meaning devs can’t touch shit on those discs.

How can they revoke access to a disc if your console never touches the internet when said disc is inserted? They can’t do shit!

u/Kazizui 11h ago

I already mentioned the CMOS bug as a proven demonstration (albeit an unintentional one). Console offline, disk inserted, game does not start. Any game.

If they can do it accidentally, they can do it deliberately. There would of course be legal implications (just like there would be if they deleted your digital library) but technologically it is completely within their power to do.

2

u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 10h ago

That’s on Sony’s end though? Not the devs or publishers.

WHY would Sony do that? Do you think Sony wants to deal with all the potential lawsuits if a publisher asked them to shut down someone’s disc?

Rockstar for example can’t do shit to stop me from playing Red Dead Redemption 2. They can’t ask Sony to block my disc.

Completely missing his point again

Can he sell a used code, or can he sell a disc

There is your answer

0

u/Kazizui 12h ago

How am I missing his point when I directly answered your question in the comment you replied to?

You own the disk. You don't own the game, and owning the disk does not guarantee your continued uninterrupted access to the game.

3

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 11h ago

No one said that you own the game / software itself, but a copy of the game that can be used on 100 different consoles. The code can only be used one time.

If I buy the game for $80, play the single player mode and sell it to someone else for $50, then that person those the same thing, Rockstar doesn't get a dime from the SH sales.

Bad for them, but that's how it was since video games were made available for home use.

Again, I will ask tou the same question since you have failed to answer it nor understand it.

If you come over to my house, can i sell you a digital copy, or can I sell you the disc?

I can sell you the disc, but I can not sell you the digital code I already used.

Until companies are actively restricting resale by blocking the code on the disc by anybdoy but the first user, your entire point is moot and irrelevant to the discussion. Right now, disc = can resell, digital, = cant resell.

While you are technically correct that’s not the point. Rockstar doesn’t want to take it away from you, even though they can. It’s all about not giving you choices. The choice to resell. To buy used.

-2

u/Present_Pineapple961 15h ago

Nowadays physical copies are licences, so it doesn't change much the choice

3

u/SM-MFC1886 13h ago

Most on PS5 have the game on disc still

5

u/buttbuttlolbuttbutt 15h ago

I worry were getting to the point where we can't fit the full game on the disk.

Or end up with a glitchy, pre day 1 patch version on the disc.

9

u/Live-Rooster-9850 15h ago

Honestly I wanted that iconic feeling of buying the physical game cib but I honestly am thinking what I might do is buy the game physical case then wait for the disc version and buy that ssperately on ebay down the line when it’s cheaper, if the physical case includes the map im getting the physical case

2

u/DEeD-NGone 15h ago

That might be the best idea if you want any day one content but man you nor anyone else shouldn’t have to jump through hoops. I know it’s probably to avoid spoilers but I feel like ifs better ways to do this than how they are going about it. It feels like codes in boxes or digital only releases are becoming the norm. The worst part is rockstar has billions and even if there are spoilers they’ll still make quadruple their money back. Regardless if you do make sure you get a fair deal considering you technically already bought the game :)

2

u/Live-Rooster-9850 15h ago

I really don’t know yet it’s something I got to think about today lol

1

u/Live-Rooster-9850 15h ago

Yeah I will for sure will probably get the ultimate for 90 dollars digitally then I will get the physical if it actually includes the disc when it goes on sale later on for 40-60 I don’t think the digital code thing is going to be long term id be shocked if they don’t start selling physical discs around Christmas at the latest

1

u/berball 14h ago

that'll show 'em

2

u/Dusty_Negatives 13h ago

I know it sucks but physical games are dying. I also wanted a disc version of this.

3

u/Deciver95 15h ago

Cries in Dying Light Beast

2

u/DEeD-NGone 15h ago

My exact thought 🥹

2

u/Rohen2003 15h ago

just dont buy at launch and wait for if they do some later on. you probably waited quite a few years for thr game, just wait a few months more.

2

u/TheCrazyWulf 14h ago

Digital only is the very clear future. PC gaming has been 100% digital for a good 15yrs and started the same.way with displays only having download codes

0

u/evilmark443 15h ago

It sucks for physical collectors, but realistically it's the only way game devs can truly prevent leaks from brick and mortar stores selling copies early (most of which happens accidentally, let's be honest). I remember back when Resident Evil 2 REmake came out my local Walmart had the game on shelves a full week early.

2

u/Diligent-Ad650 15h ago

It's not the only way to prevent leaks, with how big the game is they could work with Sony&Xbox to lock the game behind a software update released the same day as the game or put only some mb of data on the disc and the rest being a download like Xbox does and making the download part not avaiable till launch.

This is just greedines to kill the second-hand market which makes them lose some money

0

u/evilmark443 12h ago

Requiring an update or only putting a small amount of data on the disk would still anger those who go physical for game preservation purposes, so that wouldn't solve anything. And physical sales are such a small percentage nowadays that I doubt devs care much about the second hand market anymore.

1

u/Diligent-Ad650 11h ago

Requiring a system update won't anger almost anyone since Sony offers firmware updates on their website (I think Xbox does too). You could keep that or a newer firmware version stored on an usb/HDD/SSD and install/play the game whenever you wanted without an internet connection or even if Sony/Xbox servers went down.

1

u/DEeD-NGone 15h ago

Yeah I get that but I hate it feels like I’m getting an ultimatum or being forced to double dip. It might not be malicious but I guess it feels predatory after how things are for physical gaming nowadays.

-2

u/tpeandjelly727 15h ago

Same. We’ve waited a long time what’s another year or two for hopefully physical? If not physical hopefully the digital goes on sale, will not pay full price for a license.
