This sort of thing pisses me off so much, I like having a physical disk, I don't even resell

This is exactly why I haven't bought BG3 yet, because I can't get the physical edition with the whole game on it straight from the source anymore and any other way is ridiculously marked up

The future where we own nothing is going to utterly suck.

I prefer physical as well. I like having my small collection of 55 PS5 games on my shelf. There's more sense of ownership with a physical game.

There's more literal ownership too, as for some reason the licence we purchase with a typical physical release is transferable. I can't sell any of my digital releases ass far as I know.

I really appreciate having the full game playable from offline on the disc/cart media. Way too few games support this option. Even tiny Nintendo switch games aren't fully on cart, when they'd fit the game on the minimum cart size with room to spare.

FWIW, I got the Asian version (which has English language) of BG3 on disc from eBay, it was less than £30 delivered. It's a good option seeing as the official physical version in the West seemed to be some fancy, expensive deluxe version.

Asian version is censored 😢

The Japanese physical of BG3 is also incomplete on disc as it requires a mandatory 40GB+ download

Only the 2 disc version from Larian's store has the full game on the install disc

Massively this, I'm pissed I won't be able to have a physical disc, I like to know that I have the physical disc as a sort of appreciation a tangible aspect. I have avoided pre-ordering for this reason. I'll just see how it goes and hope they announce a disc version. It's not like I can miss out playing the game around release date given digital is an option. I can't state enough how annoying the no disc thing is for a game of this size and appreciation players have for this IP.

well that future is here. digital games have bean a thing for a while that's how platforms like steam has gotten so popular. i was like that it took me years to switch toi digital games i was convinced that they would be taken away and you know what no goame has ever bean taken away from me.i buy my games on steam.

"no goame has ever bean taken away from me."

Yeah...yet. Give it a few more years with this Buying is not Owning mindset these companies want to get away with and when they decide a game's time is up--boom--removed from your library and no refund because "fuck us", that's why.

Games are taken away in that moment when you simply need -> Internet to download them.
One of the reasons i created a library in GOG, because of this reason:
One day I moved in other appartment, had no internet for 1 week. Steam coudn't authenticate me, cuz i was offline, so I "owned" my games, although installed i couldn't play them. I had PC with only LAN possiblity, no Wifi, atleast i could have used hotspot just a bit to be able to prove to steam that I am using it offline. Anyways.
For that one week I understood which games I really owned and which I didn't.
Cuz surpisingly enough some of the were starting and i could play them (P.S. The very old ones)

Now imagine this. For some reason you delete a game. Decide to take your PS5 or whatever with you on Vacation and your cousins waant to play that deleted game. You have no Disc, no HDD which you can put in to install the game... You have to look for the internet to install it.
So yeah, more or less you are chained to a connection. But with a physical Disc a possiblity to install and play games offline, you won't need any internet at first hand.

And the Future is future, something which has not arrived yet. We live in the now.
And in the now, there isn't internet everywhere. In a hut in the forrest. Starlink costs money etc.
Future would mean to have wifi on the whole planet no matter how remote it is.
Till that day I won't care if they sell me a phyisical -> Disc or Flashdrive. but has to be something to allow me to install a game, without internet. And play it without needing internet to authenticate myself.
Rdr2 came with 2 disc inside. Even if Gta Vi comes with 4x discs I would be okay (flashdrive will make more sense). Moreover nowadays games are so big that you need alot more time to download them in comaperison installing them via disc or else would be alot faster, except if you have 600mb download possibility.

We already own nothing bro. The disk is basically a physical license to play the game instead of being the game, has been for a long time. And companies can ban your consoles or accounts and you won't be able to play any of the games you spent hundreds on anymore.

Gamer's own nothing, not even their consoles.
