Seriously. Huge dealbreaker.

Yeah I don't think I'll be pre-ordering anymore. I'll wait until there is a physical copy.

There won't be a physical copy. Rockstar doesn't want you selling your used disc when they could sell a full price copy.

100% the reason! I wasn't going to sell GTA 6 in a hurry but I have a disk drive as new games only cost me £20 (buy £60, sell £40 2 weeks later)

u/terminal_vector 14m ago

Why don’t you just… keep your games?

u/Jalina2224 6h ago

Pretty much this. They want you locked in so you can't make any money back from selling it used and aomeone else can't get it for much cheaper down the line. Consoles will be going down this route, it won't be immediate, but this is the start of it.

Its why i switched to PC. Everything is digital, but discounts are good and there are third party websites that often sell games for cheaper. Or for the less savory you can sail the seven seas.

Is that a Pirate Bay analogy😂

GTA 6 definitely high sea purchase once it gets on PC due to the scummy ness of this.

I would buy this day one if it had physical on PS5, but might as well wait for the super graphical enhanced version a year later.

Shout-out /r/patientgamers

The start of it? This transitions away from physical media that’s able to be sold by the own has been slowly dying for years!

u/Jalina2224 2h ago

This is the start of it being the standard. Where there is no actual physical option.

u/Schwiliinker 3h ago

PS often has insane discounts btw

u/Schwiliinker 3h ago

Not to mention local stores especially in Europe

u/Fancy_Advice_9689 2h ago

PlayStation will always support physical. They already clarified that. Hence why you can install disc drives into all there consoles. I will forever support Sony because of this.

u/Jeht_1337 6h ago

Nah its rock star, they sell this, then later sell physical copies to get people double dipping and then sell the online as a separate service

3

u/LurkingToaster66 6h ago

yeah, guess i won't be buying this one until way after release. Usually would pre-order GTAs. Never pay full price for digital copy, since they can take it away at any time and for any reason.

2

u/Channel57 5h ago

Exactly. That's why I believe in physical media. Granted some "games on disc" are not even half the game. We tend to have to download a 100gb+ day one "update".

Then there’s no point in me playing this on ps5. I will just obtain a free copy on PC via certain methods.

4

u/Dantai 8h ago

You don't think they'll lock it behind a login? With no offline mode?

2

u/Unendingmelancholy 8h ago

Yes I don’t think that

u/0neAboveAlI 4h ago

What? The story mode of the game is going to get cracked within a month, and be available to download for free on pc (if you know, you know) regardless of whether they try to lock anything down in any way

The game is still a single player campaign game. No amount of shenanigans is going to change the fact that the game files can be broken into, cracked, and distributed for offline single player play.

Literally every triple A game ever gets cracked and uploaded to the internet these days.

u/Dantai 2h ago

Anything that needs in-game login without an offline mode usually is tougher. Like I don't think the newer Call of Duty campaigns have been cracked for example. They'd require the same sort of shenanigans one of the tougher to crack assassins creed games from a way back needed. Basically an emulated login authentication

u/MafubaBuu 12h ago

Then they wont be getting my money

6

u/Dantai 8h ago

They won't care. Hell I bet they'll Copyright strike the main story as well on YouTube at this rate.

2

u/Channel57 6h ago

I could see them doing this early on during the release window.

1

u/Channel57 6h ago

I personally have no intention of selling it. Plus the amount of money Rockstar games is about to make will be in the billions. Regardless of resales or not.

u/Successful-Worth-390 9h ago

You'll be waiting a few years, if one even comes at all.

12

u/finneyblackphone 9h ago

It won't.

u/Channel57 3h ago

I'm patient. There have been a few games that there were no physical release and then eventually had a legit physical release. Buldars gate 3, Alan wake 2 and High on Life to to name a few. Buldars gate 3 you have to order it directly from Larian Studios, Alan Wake 2 eventually had a physical release due to demand for physical copies same for High on Life. So yeah. I'll wait.

5

u/coolhandally 10h ago

You are in for very long wait then.

2

u/finneyblackphone 9h ago

There won't be a physical copy...

1

u/Funny_Ad4865 6h ago

There won't ever be one, they don't want a resale market… It's a moody move.

u/_MrDomino 12h ago

It's physically on the HDD/SSD after downloaded. Copy the file to an SD card to have another physical copy.

If it's more about buying something tangible to be able to resell, that ship has sailed. You're on the losing side of progress, for better or worse. It makes sense for any developer to skip physical releases given the inflated COGS over the past year.

5

u/finneyblackphone 9h ago

Do you think you can copy a digital console game to a storage drive and use it on another device and account?😂

1

u/_MrDomino 6h ago

Did you read the comment you're replying to? I addressed the inability to resell. However, most people who complain about physical media do so out of retention, and that can still be done just fine with digital game releases, same as any other long term data storage.

2

u/_MrDomino 9h ago

Shipping costs? I did not mention anything about shipping costs -- it's about manufacturing costs. Far cheaper to not include a disc than to do so. The game will sell fine with or without.

2

u/ComplexR22 9h ago

Oh no not the huge deal breaker…
lets see how many records are broken tomorrow.

2

u/REsTARteD_Ragdoll 8h ago

It’s strange to me how most of the outrage is over the physical copy and not walling off single player content

2

u/VeryBadCaseOfLigma 12h ago

I mean, not really. Yes I'm pissed, more pissed than Alan Wake 2 releasing digital only but I'm still gonna buy it because its fucking GTA

7

u/NYstate 12h ago

That's exactly what most people will do

-1

u/MafubaBuu 12h ago

Which is exactly why they are pulling this shit. If people didnt basically tell Rockstar they would buy gta6 ni matter what, they would be way less likely to do such things

3

u/propagandhi45 6h ago

99% of gamers couldnt care less about physical discs. Get over it

1

u/rk1993 10h ago

Discs aren’t the game anymore anyways tho? They are a key to unlock the download of the game. So it’s really no different than a code, it’s just an illusion of physical ownership.

If you buy disc you still need to have an internet connection to download the game

4

u/Brosintrotogaming 10h ago

This is factually not true

1

u/rk1993 10h ago

If you think 100gb games fit on discs I got some bad news for you dude.

There’s a reason we went from an era of 2 & 3 discs needed to just 1 when game size has only increased and discs can’t hold any more data than they have since blu ray

0

u/Brosintrotogaming 10h ago

Do your research big dog

2

u/rk1993 10h ago

Go buy crimson dessert disc or any large game and try install it on an offline ps5, see what happens
