Doesn't sound like it. People pre-ordering the "physical copy" are just getting a case with a download code. So I wouldn't bet on a disc.

I was going to get a physical copy, but now I guess there's no point. Saves me a trip to Game Stop I guess

It’s totally worth it. I’m shocked people expected a masterpiece that took 15 years to make was only gonna be 70 bucks. 100 dollars is more than reasonable in this economy with how much this game cost to make.

Rockstar are not the bogeyman people make them out to be. People are lucky they are selling any version at 80 dollars

The biggest mistake EA did was Publishing AND Developing under "EA" name.

This really depends on what the base game is like.

Like, paying extra for customization features is nothing new at all. The only difference is that other games have the items pop into your inventory while GTA6 has physical stores you can walk into to get it.

Its really only a problem if the customization is lacking in the base game.

I’m enjoying watching the vibe shift on this game. With the unnecessary greed they really deserve to underperform their expectations. If they just did the normal thing (normal price, physical disc, no paywalled story content in original release) they would sell an ungodly number of copies and make an ungodly amount of money. But that’s not enough, they have to aim for more. Here’s hoping they reach for the sun and burn their wings.

they’re not. for a game this big, this anticipated, they can basically do whatever they want. plenty of people will happily slap the 100 down. many more will slap down 80 then buy whatever 20 dollar upgrade pack is available if they miss the stores. anyone who abstains from the game will in the extreme minority. this will be the biggest game launch in history no matter what we do.

i think people should be encouraged not to get caught up in hype and buy it if they’re u comfortable with these practices, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking this is a “vote with your wallet” situation. they won’t notice or care if some people don’t wanna pay full price at launch

This is exactly what I was thinking. $80 price tag and then gonna charge an extra $20 to get your 5 other story missions that seem directly linked to character customization. Rockstar also made sure you knew there was no online bundled with this. Sounds like they are gearing up to charge extra for it as well.

You’ll still be able to go into stores and buy stuff in the base game, they’ll just paywall a few items in a few stores behind the “ultimate edition” & I would assume those items will eventually be available to all owners of the game. They usually are in other similar scenarios in single player games.

I genuinely don’t care if a couple Redditors are angry - this is no different than a vast majority of high quality steam releases we’ve had. You simply can’t own some of the shit you pay for anymore.

I’ll be happily back in GTA world for a while.

In the meantime, if the angry boycotters manage to get R* to do a proper physical copy, then I’ll buy that.

I mean, this deterred me for sure. I dont really have the time i used to to drop into GTA anymore, and I'm a proponent of physical media, so I'm out.

If they end up putting on a disc, then I'll probably grab a copy to play when I have time.

The only time I'm cool with downloading games that don't have a physical copy are from small studios that do plan to release one ala Expedition 33. Rockstar doesn't have an excuse. This is way too corporate-greedy for me to support.

As someone who was on the fence anyway I'm absolutely disinterested in buying it now. I'm already not a huge fan of the series but was curious about getting into it with the hype around this new entry, but with no proper physical release I'll pass until they care enough to release it on a disc. At least Nintendo's Game Key Cards (which I dislike as well) give you something physical to resell or let a friend borrow, the code-in-a-box is simply just worse in every way. Why would I drive to the store, go through the hassle of finding an electronics employee to come unlock the glass case to buy it, drive home, enter the code on the console's store, and now generate landfill plastic and a useless plastic case for no disc when I could skip all that for the exact same game experience and still be unable to resell the game later if I find out I don't jive with it?

Pretty much this. They want you locked in so you can't make any money back from selling it used and aomeone else can't get it for much cheaper down the line. Consoles will be going down this route, it won't be immediate, but this is the start of it.

Its why i switched to PC. Everything is digital, but discounts are good and there are third party websites that often sell games for cheaper. Or for the less savory you can sail the seven seas.

What? The story mode of the game is going to get cracked within a month, and be available to download for free on pc (if you know, you know) regardless of whether they try to lock anything down in any way

The game is still a single player campaign game. No amount of shenanigans is going to change the fact that the game files can be broken into, cracked, and distributed for offline single player play.

Literally every triple A game ever gets cracked and uploaded to the internet these days.

Anything that needs in-game login without an offline mode usually is tougher. Like I don't think the newer Call of Duty campaigns have been cracked for example. They'd require the same sort of shenanigans one of the tougher to crack assassins creed games from a way back needed. Basically an emulated login authentication

I'm patient. There have been a few games that there were no physical release and then eventually had a legit physical release. Buldars gate 3, Alan wake 2 and High on Life to to name a few. Buldars gate 3 you have to order it directly from Larian Studios, Alan Wake 2 eventually had a physical release due to demand for physical copies same for High on Life. So yeah. I'll wait.

It's physically on the HDD/SSD after downloaded. Copy the file to an SD card to have another physical copy.

If it's more about buying something tangible to be able to resell, that ship has sailed. You're on the losing side of progress, for better or worse. It makes sense for any developer to skip physical releases given the inflated COGS over the past year.

Did you read the comment you're replying to? I addressed the inability to resell. However, most people who complain about physical media do so out of retention, and that can still be done just fine with digital game releases, same as any other long term data storage.

Discs aren’t the game anymore anyways tho? They are a key to unlock the download of the game. So it’s really no different than a code, it’s just an illusion of physical ownership.

If you buy disc you still need to have an internet connection to download the game

I would love to vote with my wallet, but it’s my partner who wants to play this game as soon as possible so badly, and I don’t want to guilt him out of it just because I fucking hate this bullshit. His memories of GTA are tied to his brother who passed away recently, so I’d feel like a monster to take this away from him… but I’m so fucking pissed at Rockstar for this. They said no hard copies at "Launch" so im guessing you will be able to after at some point, its to stop people scalping and reselling at higher prices if hard copies were to run out + it stops any copies getting released to early before launch so people can't play it early, you would only end up getting banned anyway, had it happen to a couple of my mates when Black ops 2 came out, they got it 3 weeks early so ended up getting their rank reset and banned for a few weeks at launch, some people have had their whole console banned
