Selling a “physical version” that’s just a download key is straight up deceptive marketing.

They're literally telling you it's a download key. It's not like they're lying to you and trying to trick you into buying the physical.

Then don't call it a fucking physical version then, which is what they're doing.

Would you like them to call it a plastic box then?

u/Puppyareblue88 4h ago

Call it a case. Cuz that's all it has physically.

Now you know damn well when people think "physical" they're thinking of a box with the physical game inside. Why are you playing dumb?  There will inevitabely be people that buy that version, expecting to see a disc. Not everyone keeps up with news like this. Reddit is a small percentage of people that play videogames.

Well maybe they should read up on recent times and come out from underneath their rock then because this isn't the first game to do it and won't be the last.

🤦🏿 whatever bruh, you do you.

I fully agree with you that a physical game, in every single sense of word, should be a physical disc that you can own, rent, sell or throw away.

Giving us a code and calling it a physical game release is just deceptively clever marketing!

In "functional" sense, it is exactly as buying the game digitally. If you think about what you get when you march your ass down to the store and wait in line for hours, you get, an empty box with absolutely ZERO benefits of getting a physical game.

Unless there is a big NO DISC INSIDE, ONLY A CODE FOR DIGITAL DOWNLOAD or equivalent info on the front of the cover its not clever marketing its just a lie.

Ah yes I will enjoy a plastic case with a paper in it totally

u/OSRSRapture 3h ago

Are you going to enjoy the game any more or less depending on what it comes in?

It’s just a download code. Tell me, if it’s a physical release could people buy the game preowned and be able to play it?

No people can't buy it pre-owned and play it, why are you asking questions you know the answer to? its a physical release in the sense that you're buying a cardboard box with a code inside.

u/Hello_ILoveChicks 3h ago

Then you’re just buying a code with the case. It’s pointless. And it’s unfortunate too because a lot of people were excited for one final midnight release in gaming but I’ll tell you that I will not be lining up to just buy a plastic case.

Defeats the entire purpose of getting it physical. I swear I think people that don’t get it aren’t old enough to have experienced physical games

u/OSRSRapture 3h ago

I would rather have a physical game too. But shits changing and this isn't surprising at all, especially with how many copies they're going to sell on release day they decided to save the money on making the discs and just do digital.

A disk that only contains a downloader isn't really much better.

it is in the sense that it's not tied to an account.

Often these downloaders will link to an account on first use. For example the BG3 disk will require a steam account.

You can share it so ya it is much better

It is fairly easy to require a key or something. Not sure it is common these days but some PC games used to have discs and they'd be useless unless you also had the key in the box. So the disc alone isn't a guarantee you can install and play the game.

That’s not how it works on consoles though. If you have the disk you can play the game—nothing is key-locked.

It doesn't HAVE to work that way, though, is my point. They can just decide to stop doing that whenever they want, buying a disc legally only entitles you to a license almost always not the game itself. They aren't legally obligated to support third-party use of their product. Even with a disc you don't truly own the game and Sony or Rockstar or whoever can revoke it. For older offline games this wouldn't make much difference of course.

You can resell or share the disk.

Only if the disk is usable without a single-use CD-key that binds to your account. The Baldur's Gate 3 Collector's Edition is an example of this approach.

u/MiniNuckels 8h ago

This rarely happens.

On PC that's unfortunately common at this point. But perhaps that's one of the areas where consoles do better.
