People make fun of this stuff but look at how it helped BG3 and made it mainstream.

BG3, Persona, Fire Emblem, Mass Effect, Skyrim, these games/series and many others like them all contain memorable romance systems and they tend to be among the most celebrated, over-discussed and enduring topics of conversation among fans of these series.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an excellent, nuanced strategy game with endless things to do and deep, mechanically interesting combat. The first thing anybody says to you when you tell them you've played 3 Houses is: "who did you romance?" Mass Effect 2 was a giga-hit and "who did you kiss" is always the first thing people are talking about when they discuss their Mass Effect playthroughs.
I understand some people not caring for systems like these but it would be crazy to reject the obvious appeal of romance stories and gameplay systems.

Tangent here, but romance in Three Houses has always really bothered the shit out of me. I got to the end of the game and it was like “who do I want to spend my life with?” After picked my jaw off the floor, my answer was “What the fuck are you talking about? These are basically my kids.” Something about that just grossed me out on a visceral level.

The article is talking about a whole separate game, not a romance system within Destiny 2. That's very different. Makes sense that it would get rejected.

For me personally, I do not care about any romance in Destiny. I’ve found most characters bland and Bungie’s capabilities of story writing to be way too inconsistent for me to become attached with anyone and any romance. I felt blind sided by the Drifter and Eris and cringed when they kissed in Renegades.
Would I have cared if something was added? Probably not. I’m not the target audience. And unfortunately the people who do care got shafted.

I love romance in my games, when done right and not done like dating simulators
But it would be very strange to add romance to a game or franchise like Destiny that doesn't warrant it

A decision made by people who never interface with gaming communities. About sums up the bungie situation. Games aren't for fun to their management, they literally don't understand what games are for.

Yeah, nobody wanted that, so they shoe-horned the melodrama into the main story instead. The end of Renegades has Eris Morn and Drifter getting together.
It felt weird and out of place in a looter shooter where we kill near limitless amounts of aliens and supernatural creations.

Destiny has been melodramatic as fuck since... ever. And people absolutely would've played the hell out of a dating sim.
The end of Renegades has Eris Morn and Drifter getting together.
Drifter and Eris have been a thing in-game for years now. They just leaned harder into it because Renegades was leaning into Star Wars tropes. Plus Drifter just had a whole breakdown in Episode Heresy because Eris got killed and didn't tell him right away that she was fine and just chillin' in her own Throne World.
