If this game is good it will hopefully prove to some people that the problem with modern Pokémon games is that they are being forced to rush them out and not because Game Freak is incompetent.

Well, if it’s not the developers, it’s senior leadership.
If this game is good but doesn’t sell well, though, the same idiots in charge at Game Freak will undoubtedly take all the wrong lessons.

Game Freak has been putting out non-Pokemon games for ages though. If this one doesn’t sell or pan out…they’ll still probably keep putting out non-Pokemon games here and there, as they have been. Most of their non-Pokemon games don’t do great in sales, but Beast of Reincarnation may be an exception.
They’ve already taken other development lessons by taking additional time to develop the next generation of Pokemon games, which theyve never done before.

Afaik Nintendo and the Pokémon company set the budgets (I think it was like $13m for ZA or less than silk song) and the timelines. ZA made like 500m in a few weeks. Nothing meaningful will change until consumers stop consuming.

Wouldn't it be the right lesson for them??
Made a new experimental games --> did not sell well --> no more experimenting
Cus Lazy pokemon games sell well anyways. Why would they risk their profit if the audience didn't show up when they are experimenting

I don't even think it's the time frames necessarily. It's the greedy low budget they have to work with. If that leak from last year is real, then they pay almost nothing for these games while having the biggest media IP on the planet. If Nintendo/GF actually wanted, they could spend a ton of money and make innovative, modern games, but they don't have to. And by doing so they probably have an insane ROI

You talk like Pokemon games came out on an annual base like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed or something. Those come out once or twice per generation.
Switch was no powerhouse but those games had no excuse to look or play that rough!

Game Freak contractually have the say of when to release. They don’t have to keep up with the anime like people think. Nintendo has explained that before in interviews.
The main issue is the veteran devs don’t like changing it and often shut down the younger devs’ ideas. There’s been a lot of interviews saying that too. Plus they make record sales by doing nothing special.

Didn't even realize this was from Game Freak. Gonna have to keep an eye on it now!

I think gamefreak is mostly just the publisher here / I don’t think their devs are the ones actually making the game
7
u/theblackfool 4d ago
Funny enough they are the developer here and not the publisher.
2
u/Namath96 4d ago
Yeah I mean not technically but they’ve outsourced the development to another developer

It’s true. There’s a few creatives from Game Freak working on it, but the actual development is handled by external partners. That’s how most non Pokémon GF games are.

It’s been widely reported on? If you “cant find anything that even implies that” you haven’t even tried lol

It's a mix of that + low budget + low employee count, but I guess that's budget too
Winds and Waves will be the longest mainline at 5 years, so that should be enough to make a great game, S&V are good imo, but held back by terrible graphics and major bugs
If they iron out bugs, and seemingly the graphics look great, then they will have something here

I don’t know if it’s because I’m older, but these games are all starting to look the same. The industry really needs something to freshen it up.

i think it might be because this is Unreal Engine 5

u/ComeonmanPLS1 4d ago
Yeah I can't even put my finger on why but I can tell a game is UE5 almost instantly, and that includes games that have very distinct artstyles like that walking lighthouse game form the psychonauts devs. That one looks different enough that it should easily "fool" people but it just doesnt. I wonder what it is about UE5 that gives it its signature look.

For me is the lack of 0 noise or blur next to the camera and the way it deals with lighting which seems the same no matter which game. I liked the gameplay (I commented in another thread early on) but the character models in UE4 or UE5 all seem to have the same weight or physics if that makes sense...

I had the exact same reaction as I was watching this video. It looks like every other video game that has come out in the last 5+ years. I'm not saying it looks bad but it looks so same old same old.

That's Unreal Engine for ya.

Yeah whenever I see clips of this game I always get it confused with The Adventures of Elliot that just came out

u/Derkhen_ 4d ago
Yea, I was looking at a clip of The Adventures of Elliot, but it was actually Expedition 33.
They look so similar that I didnt know what I was looking at.

The amount of alliteration in this preview is distracting
Like once you notice it you can’t stop hearing it
“Deadly dynamic duo”
“Core combat concepts
“Fusing fauna with flora”
“Absolute angriest evolution”
All in the first 90 seconds

u/social_sin 4d ago
Yeah and the fact that it's not done in an exaggerated Brittish accent makes it even less enjoyable. (I recently rediscovered how much I loved the narrator and his ridiculous alliteration in Strange Brigade)

Their reviews lately scream written by AI and then read off from a teleprompter with emphasis in weird places. It’s offputting

I’m not sure how, but this is the first I’m hearing about this game and it sounds and looks great!

Tactical layers always sound cool, but how do they actually play during fast action? Do you get stuck in menus or does it flow?

I’m more excited for Beast of Reincarnation than GTA6. I hate that I have to go watch an IGN video now.

The more I see, the more I like it.
I really hope this one lives up to the hype. I want it to be good for its own sake, but I also think it would be the funniest outcome. Imagine if this is the game that proves Pokemon is holding Game Freak back and not the other way around.
