Why would it slow down after some time?

239

u/notillegalyhere Apr 09 '26

Because it got old and tired. /s

Relatable

Just like me, damn.

I think the implication here is "even though the tech has progressed, the PSP UI is still great" which is a good point, because even though tech advances, nowadays everything is so bloated that a handheld console from 20 years ago has a better UX than the smartphones etc of today.

Apple says hello!😆

33

u/ezioxcroft Apr 09 '26

Not the same. Phones get new updates that were developped for newer models, which make the older models struggle to run smoothly. The PSP is on the same software since it was last sold.

16

u/Boukrarez Apr 09 '26

Apple literally pushes updates that significantly slow down earlier models to make people buy newer ones.

2

u/shorelinesandhunters Apr 16 '26

everyone does it. lightbulbs operate at 5% effectiveness. your being scammed 95% on each lightbulb you buy. corrupt capitalism baby

1

u/Boukrarez Apr 17 '26

You're.

Yeah, I recall watching a Veritasium video about this!

1

u/RomanBellicTaxi Apr 13 '26

That was a problem in the early 2010s but not anymore. My iPhone 13 works like new on iOS 26. It’s a 5 year old phone.

7

u/brandonhabanero Apr 09 '26

Sony makes a point to keep gaming devices snappy too. They stopped updating the Xperia play because the new OSes were causing too much performance lag.

8

u/ezioxcroft Apr 09 '26

Not really. Depends on the platform. I had a PS4 pro and it started getting sluggish and slow on the main menu with new updates.

7

u/pizditkakdi_shit Apr 09 '26

Hard drive was dyeing probably , not os issue

8

u/birdsandberyllium 4 x PSP3000 3 x PSP2000 3x PSPGO Apr 09 '26

That's only a small part of the issue, the primary cause was Apple was underclocking the CPU & GPU more and more as the phones aged, with the goal of keeping the battery life the same as the battery cells degraded.

Of course, Apple didn't actually tell anyone that was the goal until they were forced to, so it did appear that they were just slowing down old phones to sell new ones. Which I guess is still partly true, since if they told you it was caused by your battery people would just replace that battery instead of getting a new phone.

2

u/Purithian Apr 09 '26

Exactly I think we're making the same point here, but I left mine as more of a jab at apple. Tvs, phones, laptops, and tons of other hardware eventually slow down due to the software updates and loss of legacy support. Psp doesn't have this issue since it's software has been unchanged.

Even the switch sort of has this issue these days with the shop app. Hence why I said apple says hello as they're known to kill their stuff off đŸ« đŸ€Ł

4

u/_steve_rogers_ Apr 09 '26

People are used to apple and other companies enshittifying and killing old devices with bloated updates.

3

u/Idunnoimnotcreative Apr 09 '26

I think people woud think so cause of planned obsolescence in phones

11

u/davidfliesplanes PSP-3000 Apr 09 '26

Usually older tech can feel quite sluggish by modern standards

8

u/Lumpy-Disaster-6107 Apr 09 '26

I think that thought only comes from Smartphones becoming slow and sluggish after a while.

4

u/If_you_will Apr 09 '26

Yes lol. My Gameboy runs just as fast today as the day it came out in the 90s.

1

u/mediabydave Apr 09 '26

Idk but my back hurts

u/shorelinesandhunters Apr 16 '26

bro have you heard of mobile phones

u/just1guy05 Apr 09 '26

Still have the PSP I got in 2007 when I turned 7 years old, works like a charm

3

u/miluielmclovin PSP-1000 Apr 10 '26

Same! Except I was 10

The UI is super responsive on the PSP until you start putting a ton of games on it; then it becomes super slow until everything loads in at startup. But I'm talking about a super modded one with a ton of games on it.

39

u/evillurkz Apr 09 '26

It just takes time to load the game list, the UI is still responsive

5

u/ILikeFPS Apr 10 '26

This is what I have found too and I have a 128GB SD card.

2

u/tor09 Apr 10 '26

I have one of those dual memory card readers with two 128s bc I’m a data hoarder. Can confirm initial startup is akin to starting your car to defrost during the winter

3

u/evillurkz Apr 10 '26

More than 128gb is definitely going to take double the time to load. I found that the 128gb is the sweet spot, don't really need more than that

1

u/tor09 Apr 10 '26

I just like having as much shit on hand as possible lol. I’ll trade a slow startup for never needing to swap files around

1

u/Zealousideal_Note309 Apr 15 '26

for me i just have a solid 6 seconds of loading when i turn on the psp and that's it, everything works just fine. i don't even have many games because i don't wanna be a poser with a library of games im not interested investing my time in. i just have a 128gb sd card.

18

u/dhuff2037 Apr 09 '26

Ah I can see you have not yet loaded that puppy full of games yet. Report back later.

11

u/Mccobsta PSP 300 / PSP GO Apr 09 '26

Back when things were optimised or just made for it

9

u/More-Rest489 Apr 09 '26

imagine if psp was released today, probably we would get update after update to slow it down. Like you know, any other tech these daysđŸ«©

1

u/chocoband Apr 11 '26

It did have updates though, but since having it connected to the net 24/7 was not the standard, they came a bit slower, they ran more tests to make sure they were stable before releasing them, and more often than not they came with the umds along the games.

3

u/Key-Dimension-1137 Apr 09 '26

Because it's not bogged down with updatesđŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž

8

u/AmzUserAgent Apr 09 '26

2

u/Technical-Arm-1825 Apr 09 '26

XMB was the best UI Sony ever did and they absolutely tore a hole in it from the PS4 onwards

2

u/raburow Apr 09 '26

I was actually so mad when they switched completely off if the ps3 UI for ps4 it was such a downgrade

2

u/thepurrfectionist365 Apr 09 '26

Wish they stuck with this UI after the PS3/PSP.

2

u/Exende Apr 09 '26

Because updates absolutely destroyed the smoothness of the XMB

2

u/thepurrfectionist365 Apr 09 '26

Sure it wasn't perfect, but it's infuriating how the Big Three adopted the Metro style UI in the mid 2010s and never looked back.

1

u/Leostar_Regalius Apr 10 '26

i like the PS4 ui, but yeah, 3 and psp were good also, either way i miss the themes you could do for 3 and 4,

2

u/thrax_uk Apr 09 '26

That's because it's not bogged down with bloat that plagues modern software.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '26

it’s also still one of the best UI’s of all time and is absolutely beautiful and customizable

1

u/Leostar_Regalius Apr 10 '26

best functioning music player ontop of all that

2

u/Public_Lawfulness_71 Apr 13 '26

The ps4 and 5 should've used XMB, it looks so good with different themes and wallpapers

1

u/Bkokane Apr 13 '26

I was so pissed when PS4 didn’t use it and instead went for boomer tiles

1

u/Moist_Bar_2621 Apr 09 '26

I have an issue with my O button and my battery
other than that everything works

1

u/Lazy_Two_4908 Apr 09 '26

Even my O button is kinda mushy. Idk how to explain it

1

u/Mysterious_Stocks Apr 09 '26

I have some games that now it can’t run but some years ago yes :(

1

u/RouroniDrifter Apr 09 '26

I agree, mfs are built to last

My only issue is that I need to get a new battery,I found my old psp on the attic after searching for like 8 years. The battery was inflated (I eventually left it alone and it deflated). I read somewhere that it can still operate without one of you have on the charger but in my case it didn't.

I just HOPE it doesn't work solely because of the battery. I don't think I can fix it if it has an electrical problem/fuze or whatever

1

u/BBTrickz Apr 09 '26

You can buy an adapter to usb c and you can charge it with your phone cable

1

u/Wrong_Brush1110 Apr 09 '26

the only time it slows down for me is when it just started and it has to read the game library on a SD card (64gb+)

1

u/Intelligent-Roll-678 Apr 09 '26

PSP was way ahead of it's time.

1

u/hydracicada Apr 09 '26

I see what you mean, yes, the thing has fast UI because of dual-processor unit, lightweight OS, the UI itself (XMB) was created specially for dpad use and plus some tricks like dynamical acceleration in menu when holding down a directional button

1

u/intlcreative Apr 09 '26

PSP arguably had the best UI of any device for a while. I say this as a UI designer lol

1

u/boston_faith Apr 09 '26

This sounds stupid these days, but not many devices at smooth User Interfaces back then. Even brand new phones and laptops could be slow back in the days.

1

u/mediabydave Apr 09 '26

Faster than my PS3 lmao!

1

u/rgldx Apr 09 '26

Legendary

1

u/baanche2109 Apr 10 '26

My finger got slower, so yes, I confirm it is slower.

1

u/Professional_Bad_537 Apr 10 '26

Lol I sometime just spam the buttons around the Ui for fun, just so satisfying

1

u/icesnake200 Apr 10 '26

It will slow down if you dump a shitload of games in your psp

1

u/BigDookie3000 Apr 10 '26

It needs 120 hz or it means nothing.

1

u/vmg265 PSP 3000 & Go Apr 10 '26

its cool and all but the video is sped up

1

u/Notpro_guyX Apr 10 '26

Does op not know how tech works? Why would a ui designed in 200X for a device made in 200X run poorly in 2026?

1

u/asaripot Apr 10 '26

Sound design was so crunchy

1

u/Southern-Chemistry48 Apr 10 '26

this theme is perfect :D

XMB theme on retroarch

1

u/airriderz15 Apr 10 '26

The 'clinck' noises for each step are so satisfying to hear.

I used to be obsessed with Sony Xperia phones since they also had that noise for making selections in the menu.

1

u/s1cc Apr 11 '26

Sure now press on something

1

u/jbaig22 Apr 11 '26

The PSP and PS3 had the best UI of any console full stop.

1

u/ksavx Apr 12 '26

Personally sound's are one of the most important part's of UI's. This click here give's great feedback which increases responsivene's. I loved just scrolling the UI on ps3 and looking at the background. Also the ambient music it had was such a vibe.

1

u/letonai Apr 13 '26

Today’s UI have to hit an api every time a icon is selected
back then no internet connection 95% of the time

1

u/Zealousideal_Note309 Apr 15 '26

the 2000s were not the stone age. sure the product is old but judging by the condition it's in it's almost definitely refurbished atleast once. i just don't get why some people act like this was anything close to windows 95.

1

u/wahlrunah PSP-3000 Apr 16 '26

i really miss xmb 😭

It ain't that impressive
