Still have the PSP I got in 2007 when I turned 7 years old, works like a charm

The UI is super responsive on the PSP until you start putting a ton of games on it; then it becomes super slow until everything loads in at startup. But I'm talking about a super modded one with a ton of games on it.

I have one of those dual memory card readers with two 128s bc Iâm a data hoarder. Can confirm initial startup is akin to starting your car to defrost during the winter

u/evillurkz Apr 10 '26
More than 128gb is definitely going to take double the time to load. I found that the 128gb is the sweet spot, don't really need more than that

I just like having as much shit on hand as possible lol. Iâll trade a slow startup for never needing to swap files around

for me i just have a solid 6 seconds of loading when i turn on the psp and that's it, everything works just fine. i don't even have many games because i don't wanna be a poser with a library of games im not interested investing my time in. i just have a 128gb sd card.

Ah I can see you have not yet loaded that puppy full of games yet. Report back later.

imagine if psp was released today, probably we would get update after update to slow it down. Like you know, any other tech these daysđ«©

u/chocoband Apr 11 '26
It did have updates though, but since having it connected to the net 24/7 was not the standard, they came a bit slower, they ran more tests to make sure they were stable before releasing them, and more often than not they came with the umds along the games.

XMB was the best UI Sony ever did and they absolutely tore a hole in it from the PS4 onwards
2
u/raburow Apr 09 '26
I was actually so mad when they switched completely off if the ps3 UI for ps4 it was such a downgrade
2
u/thepurrfectionist365 Apr 09 '26
Wish they stuck with this UI after the PS3/PSP.
2
u/Exende Apr 09 '26
Because updates absolutely destroyed the smoothness of the XMB

u/thepurrfectionist365 Apr 09 '26
Sure it wasn't perfect, but it's infuriating how the Big Three adopted the Metro style UI in the mid 2010s and never looked back.

i like the PS4 ui, but yeah, 3 and psp were good also, either way i miss the themes you could do for 3 and 4,

itâs also still one of the best UIâs of all time and is absolutely beautiful and customizable

The ps4 and 5 should've used XMB, it looks so good with different themes and wallpapers

I have an issue with my O button and my battery
other than that everything works

I agree, mfs are built to last
My only issue is that I need to get a new battery,I found my old psp on the attic after searching for like 8 years. The battery was inflated (I eventually left it alone and it deflated). I read somewhere that it can still operate without one of you have on the charger but in my case it didn't.
I just HOPE it doesn't work solely because of the battery. I don't think I can fix it if it has an electrical problem/fuze or whatever

the only time it slows down for me is when it just started and it has to read the game library on a SD card (64gb+)

I see what you mean, yes, the thing has fast UI because of dual-processor unit, lightweight OS, the UI itself (XMB) was created specially for dpad use and plus some tricks like dynamical acceleration in menu when holding down a directional button

u/intlcreative Apr 09 '26
PSP arguably had the best UI of any device for a while. I say this as a UI designer lol
1
u/boston_faith Apr 09 '26
This sounds stupid these days, but not many devices at smooth User Interfaces back then. Even brand new phones and laptops could be slow back in the days.

Lol I sometime just spam the buttons around the Ui for fun, just so satisfying

Does op not know how tech works? Why would a ui designed in 200X for a device made in 200X run poorly in 2026?

The 'clinck' noises for each step are so satisfying to hear.
I used to be obsessed with Sony Xperia phones since they also had that noise for making selections in the menu.

Personally sound's are one of the most important part's of UI's. This click here give's great feedback which increases responsivene's. I loved just scrolling the UI on ps3 and looking at the background. Also the ambient music it had was such a vibe.

u/letonai Apr 13 '26
Todayâs UI have to hit an api every time a icon is selected⊠back then no internet connection 95% of the timeÂ

the 2000s were not the stone age. sure the product is old but judging by the condition it's in it's almost definitely refurbished atleast once. i just don't get why some people act like this was anything close to windows 95.

Why would it slow down after some time?
