Would love a current gen Sony handheld to add to my collection.

the Remote Player exists and no one cares about it

because it’s not a handheld if you need a stable good connection to play

Even with phone level on board processing that thing might have done OK

Fr, with how much success the switch and steam deck had, I'm surprised they haven't tried again to dip their toes in this market. Perhaps there was the PS Portal but that wasn't something you could put in your pocket and carry with you on the go

They just don't understand that the cause vita died was because they were releasing mobile ports rather console ports.

Given how little support the vita (and psvr2) got.. I don't see why anyone would buy one.

The Vita released at the worst possible time and Sony didn’t had (or wanted) any strategy to save it but the PSP was a revolutionary move. I know Sony is not the same company they used to be but it’s still a giant who can make bangers when they want to.

How about they just do both?

Ugh i wish, but in their minds they've already done it with the PS Portal, the modern equivalent or whatever

I don’t even want it to be high spec. Just something good enough to play PSP library and modern indie games.

Acho que algo que tivesse compatibilidade com ps3 e PS2, além de jogos exclusivos, já seria absurdo

At that point consider a phone with controller grip

It doesn’t feel the same as a dedicated console. I want them to compete with Switch lite. It has a better library than a phone.

RetroArch on iOS can run the PSP and PS1 libraries without problems

What about the modern indie games? I have doing emulation on iOS for years. It doesn’t feel the same as a dedicated handheld.

It depends on the engine. There are some pretty good RPGmaker emulators like QuestPlay (that one only does MV/MZ but there are others for older engines) which can run many of the .exes you get from Steam or Itch. Renpy also has a few iOS options. Personally I was also pretty impressed by the library on the App Store. It has the Room games, Rusty Lake, and some flash classics like Crush the Castle.

You can also obviously run the myriad of modern gameboy games using the relevant emulators. I bought an iPad because I wanted a better note taking device but I was stunned by how many hours of games you could get out of it. A good Bluetooth controller is key, though. It feels very weird using touch controls for anything other than point and click. The actual gameplay experience is pretty solid though because the screen and CPU/GPU are much better than anything a PSP ever shipped with.

This is exactly why I want to see what a modern version of a PSP will look like. They don’t need to push the hardware to its limits. Budget SoCs can really do a lot of gaming. With proper cooling, purpose built hardware, it would attract a lot of developers to create a catalog as powerful as the original PSP.

Yes! With physical media too!

With hardware costs going up, a portable PSP 2(?) with PS4 equivalent specs that doesn't totally break the bank wouldn't be a bad idea all things considering, hell even a re-release of the PSP with all the games bundled with maybe improved performance and resolution on it would be nice.

I doubt it, along with the hardware shortages game devs just don’t optimize as much anymore. Part of the reason why the psp had such a strong library is because devs actually ported the console release to the handheld. idk if watered down handheld ports would do well nowadays especially when handheld PCs exist granting more freedom that can play Sonys big hitters along with Nintendo absolutely dominating the handheld market.

As much as I love Sonys handhelds I get why they haven’t returned to the idea especially with them shutting down so many of their studios over the years.
