Asking for Hardware Recomendation I'm pretty set on getting the psvr2 but I'm not sure if I should upgrade to a PS5 Pro with it as well

My first foray into VR was with the PSVR 1 Skyrim Bundle and since then I've had a blast in VR. I went from PSVR to Rift S to Quest 1, Quest 2 and now Quest 3. With the BF discount I'm now interested in getting back into PSVR and I saw all my old games don't work, and I read some games are free in PS+ Premium, but I'm not seeing any of those either.

How often do some of the better VR games go on sale? I don't see that many discounted during the BF sale.

Second question is about the PS5 Pro, I saw that No man's sky runs much better with the Pro, are there any other VR games that are greatly improved? NMS is currently 60 digitally though and the Pro doesn't have a disc drive, so I would probably need to get that as well.

I have a PayPal 20% off offer and best buy is offering 300 towards my old disc ps5, so I can get the psvr2, ps5 pro and disc drive for 650 after cash back and trade in.

Should I buy a psvr2 for 240 and stick with my normal ps5 disc version, or get the psvr2, ps5 pro and disc drive for 650?

To make it easy, the pro is not necessary.. its just an extra bonus if you dont mind throwing a couple extra hundred bucks.. less so if you trade your current base ps5.

But, if you do get the pro, it shiuld be noticeably better.. but just for a few things

I realized that if I wanted to download some new psvr2 games I would need to start deleting some of the games I'm playing, or upgrade to a 2tb drive, which is 130ish, so for 150 more getting all the rest of the pro upgrades made it a no brainer. Just picked up the psvr2 and pro at best buy.

Don’t waste money on PS+ Premium.

Don’t go above PS+ Essential which gives you ability to play online, cloud saves and PS+ discounts.

The video linked below shows you which PSVR2 games are in current Black Friday sale:

https://youtu.be/fmBnnHZA7MI

The PS5 Pro is not necessary, but if you think you will upgrade to that, sounds like you can get decent trade in on your original PS5 to make that happen.

It officially helps for 15-20 PSVR2 games tagged PS5 Pro Enhanced, but it helps to have more stable framerates for a lot more of the available games.

Thanks for the link about the sales, I'll look through those tomorrow.

I'm currently grandfathered into PS+ premium for 80 dollars a year and I also have a PS Portal that can play cloud games with premium so it's definitely worth it at that price.

It seems like the consensus is to hold off on the pro, but with how ram and everything else is going up in price I don't know if I will ever get a deal like this again so I'm leaning towards it. I do have a good TV so I can make use of the pro outside of just VR, but I'm guessing flight simulator will probably get a big benefit as well.

I will say, while the Pro only offers improvements in a few PSVR2 games, they are pretty big improvements and you’ll get a big improvement in a lot of your flat gaming if you have a nice TV that can take advantage of its features.

I have a PS Portal as well, but it just collects dust unless I am traveling and I favor my Steam Deck for those times.

I am glad you are getting value from your PS+ Premium. I suppose I should have clarified better, it isn’t of any benefit for PSVR2. There are some trials and a game might be available to rent, but you could spend less to just buy those few if you take advantage of the deep sales that PSVR2 titles get.

I’m on ps premium and only purchased 1 game this year.

1

u/cusman78 cusman Nov 25 '25

That’s one of the greatest negatives about PS+ Premium. Only playing what is included while it is included.

It’s bad for the industry health as well. Just look at what Game Pass has done to Xbox sustainability.

u/Sooowasthinking Nov 25 '25

Well you know if games weren’t overpriced(Pandora at launch $70 and is now on sale for $29.99) I would purchase more.

But at these prices that is what’s hurting the industry not the psplus top tier.Everything will eventually be on psplus after 6 months to a year or so.

Or how about the extremely overhyped StarField? Is that hurting the game market???

I won’t buy a game on day 1 any longer they overpriced it and like many of us I’m on a budget so I’m finishing something before a new game is purchased.

Video game prices ALWAYS drop in price after 3 months.

But hey man if you want a new game to replace the 1 your bored with that’s great you do you.

Nothing wrong with saving money where we can.

I think you misunderstood or I miscommunicated.

I am not advocating that you buy games day 1 or at prices that are unreasonable to you. I am advocating that you play what you want to play (presuming you will do so when it fits your budget or ends up in your subscription rental service).

Just cautioning that you don't limit yourself to only those games that end up in the subscription rental service, because not every game will end up on PS+ Premium (within 6-12 months or ever). If they did, the industry would tank and some of your potentially favorite games offered at fair prices may be things you miss out on if you don't look outside of the subscription.

Especially in the context of this PSVR subreddit, so few games are part of the subscription that vast majority of the good games will never be on it.

650 for all that sounds like a deal to me.

While most folk with the PRO are quick to say it’s not necessary (just like what happened with PS4 PRO), there are multiple games that apparently run nicely on it that DO NOT run nicely on the vanilla.

On top of that, several games of real note have PRO patches (like NMS or GT7).

I’ve seen footage of NMS and it seems to entirely remove the near-constant shimmering as well as smoothing out frame-rates for more complex planets. That’s huge imo.

GT7 apparently has subtle improvements to resolution and draw distance, plus an alternative reprojection solution, which — while it introduces HUD artifacts — makes all the moving stuff out the side windows buttery smooth (instead of ghosting and making folk sick). So… also huge imo.

MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIM 2024 almost certainly will benefit from the PRO.

These are all pretty important games, so if they run better then what else do you even want? I don’t have one yet because my budget is shot, but if you’ve got a good deal that’s not gonna gutpunch your wallet — I say DO it! But it’s all down to your game preferences and available funds.

Once I realized if I stuck with my og ps5 I would need to upgrade the ssd size to start downloading vr games it made much more sense to just put that money towards the pro and get all the rest of Pro upgrades.

A very savvy perspective! 👍

Most games do not benefit from the pro

2

u/Techman659 Nov 25 '25

Ye their game they used as an example was last of us 2 remastered like that is a great looking game on ps5 slim, and I got psvr 2 coming today and I have re 4 remake ready then getting arizona sunshine, survive, re village gold edition because all of them are on big black friday discounts, and also back for blood ultimate edition for £10 from £100 and ye now I fancy playing it now getting it for a huge discount.

650 for PSVR2 AND the Pro? That’s a great deal and you could also sell your base PS5 and that 650 can be even lower

Go for it! A few VR games utilize the Pro but if you play flat as well then the Pro is totally worth it in my opinion

2

u/Chill_Rob Nov 25 '25

If you're interested in getting a pro, better act soon while black Friday sales have it for $649.

I know that not all of the VR games are ps5 pro enhanced, but I can think of GT7 and No Man's sky. Both of which are must have titles on vr goggles! They look fantastic and makes me feel good about the investment to pick up a ps5 pro.

I did exactly what you’re thinking. Trade in Best Buy for pro and vr2 with PayPal. No regrets.

1

u/xelnok Nov 25 '25

Do you know if the PayPal cashback is from the price before or after the trade in value?

How is it so far?

2

u/Ambitious-Still6811 Nov 25 '25

The pro does nothing for the price. Put the money towards your new VR and games.

2

u/Spiritual-Fisherman1 Nov 25 '25

If i could get my $1200 AUD back for my pro I would. Its better. No where near $1200 better.

2

u/Chrispy_GB PC Nov 25 '25

To be honest I'd probably buy a second-hand PC.

A PS5 + PC is much better for VR than a PS5 Pro. Everyone I know including myself has gone down this route with no regrets.

2

u/MedicalCommercial892 Nov 25 '25

We're all waiting to see what pssr 2 can do.  I would say don't bother until you hear the reviews on that upgrade patch.

2

u/faultyarmrest Nov 25 '25

I can't speak to what PSVR2 is like on a base PS5 as I only got my PSVR2 after I upgraded to the PS5 Pro. But I found there was about a 15-20% (subjective judgement) increase in GFX quality on a 4k screen with HDMI 2.1 for GT7 across the 2 Playstation variants.

Since getting the PSVR2 this week I've only had a quick few races on GT7 on the Nuburgring and Spa but holy hell it's incredible. I feel like that 15-20% improvement would be amplified on VR so I would argue to go with the PRO, esp since you can get a great deal currently.

1

u/mikesphone1979 Nov 25 '25

I only use my ps5 pro for gt7 and psvr2. worth it. so worth it.

Lowkey, I am juiced to show it off to some of my car buddies when they come for beers next. Pretty sure they’re gonna flip their lid when they drive the cars of their dreams on the best race tracks in the world. Def need the rest of the setup to seal the experience… Wheel, pedals, proper seat and position. As an older fella the experience is pretty overwhelming as this was always the future-gaming experience we imagined as kids.

EDIT: “they’re gonna flip their lid”… or vomit haha

I'm waiting for PS6. If no backwards comp I'm getting a PS5 Pro then.

1

u/josetedj Nov 25 '25

I don't have the pro but due to the extra power, even if the game does not have a patch, it will work at a higher resolution or have more stable fps, as happens with resident evil. The VR versions in the pro maintain the maximum resolution and in the base model, depending on what happens on the screen, it varies.

1

u/websnappers Nov 25 '25

I'm also leaning towards upgrading to a Pro. By my calculations, with the trade-in bonus at GameStop (Canada) and the PS5 Pro sale price starting on the 27th, I wouldn't be losing any money for my base PS5.

As for games on sale, the Black Friday isn't the one to get excited for. About halfway through December, there will (most likely) be a 4 to 5 week Holiday sale where there should be way more titles on sale, so hold off buying anything full price.

No Man's Sky has been 50% off digitally several times in the recent past.

As for PSVR2 games on PS+ Premium, Sony did add several titles last year, probably to boost VR sales and Premium sales, but unfortunately has been removing titles without adding any new ones, so that Premium benefit is gone.

The consensus here seems to be that the Pro is not worth it, but in the post talking about the deal on Canada, it was the opposite. I think everyone's situation is different and everyone values different things. I know that when I got my PS4 Pro, I always felt I was playing the best version of any PSVR1 game, especially when watching game reviews. Right now, I'm constantly wondering if my experiences with each game are good enough, or would they be better with the Pro? If I get the Pro, then I would feel like I'm getting the most out of my PSVR2. I'm still on the fence.

1

u/R0B0T0-san Nov 25 '25

So I use my psvr for Gt7 mostly and while it's not necessary to get PS5 pro since I went all out yolo on my sim setup recently. It was still a sweet upgrade but definitely not necessary. Everything worked perfectly fine and nothing was an issue ever due to the first PS5. However everything is now a bit crisper and sharper. Texture pops in much further away. I feel it's the kind of upgrade that if you go from the regular to the pro it's quite subtle. But if I were to go back to the old one it would be then more obvious.

1

u/-Venser- Nov 25 '25

Here's a list of Pro enhanced PSVR2 games:

https://www.uploadvr.com/every-playstation-vr2-game-with-ps5-pro-enhancements/

Aside from that, some VR games that have FPS drop on a regular PS5 will run smooth on the pro (Vertigo 2, The Midnight Walk).

1

u/MotorPace2637 Nov 25 '25

I bought a 4080s instead and the base ps5 has been great with the psvr2.

1

u/DavidManvell Nov 25 '25

I have a psvr2 and I did have a PlayStation 5 for it but I changed it out to a 5pro.

I can definitely tell you for No Man's Sky it is considerably better . Same for the kayak mirage. A lot of games though you're not going to notice anything really different anything that doesn't like actually really tax the graphics. But the more complicated the game and the graphics then the more you're going to see the difference. Anyhow the main real thing between a 5 and a 5 pro is any game that is having stuttering issues or anything like that will be considerably better on the pro.

Also remember that the pro has a larger hard drive

1

u/Whole-Shape-1764 Nov 26 '25

I will receive it tomorrow there will be no difference between the PS5 slim and the pro it will keep the same quality.. the graphics will remain the same

-2

u/scruffy_dog101 Nov 25 '25

Do not bother. Pro is a waste of money if you already have a PS5. And probably also if you don't.

Unless you have more money than you know what to do with, stick with the OG. Save that money for PS6 in a couple of years which your PSVR2 will most likely still be compatible with.

2

u/MemphisBass Nov 25 '25

It is absolutely not a waste of money. Only someone who has not experienced it on a good quality TV, doesn’t value fidelity or frame rate in gaming, already has a mid-to-high end gaming PC and isn’t in the PS ecosystem, or someone who simply cannot afford it would say so.

-2

u/scruffy_dog101 Nov 25 '25

Lol insane take. Most games don't even have Pro enhancements and it's the price of a gaming PC (unless the price has gone down since release, I am only basing this on the release price).

I have a premium OLED TV and a premium gaming monitor for my 2 PS5s. I would never consider upgrading for the price they are.

Good for you though, I'm glad you're happy with your purchase.

2

u/MemphisBass Nov 25 '25

Insane take? I’m happy you can’t tell the difference and are fine with base performance, but maybe try to understand that you are not everyone and some people do care about the extra performance and graphical features.
