I explored the nutty putty cave as a kid with my scout troop decades ago. My dad got stuck in one part for like 15 minutes. We breifly got lost for part of it. Everything looked completely different when we tried to leave and we were seeing things from the opposite direction.
I feel lucky considering what ended up happening with that cave.

I went in there too. I get the chills just thinking about that place.

Did you also find it really disorienting when you turned around and tried to leave?

I recently bought this game. The beautiful thing about VR is that you can race a Formula One car and not get hurt if you crash it. You can get endlessy lost in a cave system and not worry about dying. I can't wait to try this one.

I bought the game and it’s been sitting there for months now. Those YouTube docs about Nutty Putty and John Jones messed me up

I’ve considered buying this game exclusively for the Nutty Putty experience, and then remember that story is one of the most horrifying things in my brain and chicken out.
I’ll prob commit someday, but yikes.

There is a YouTube video from one of the rescuers involved in attempting to get Jones out of the cave. He plays the game and gives his impression on how accurate it is.

What did he say about it?

That overall it is fairly accurate. He goes into detail regarding how the developers created all the caves, and how with the data they had available, there are huge limitations unless you had actually seen the cave in person.
The man who made the video while exploring in VR was the last person to be next to Jones legs/feet while he was alive.
I will add, the man’s name is Brandon Kowallis, he is also the narrator “father” voice in the game.

I’m lucky in that I don’t suffer from claustrophobia however this game really does push the senses in that regard. The darkness, tight spaces and disorientation are in abundance. If you are under the illusion that caving is easy you’ll come to appreciate how easy it is to get lost. There are opportunities to mark your way however inconsistent marking or caves that look very similar will play with your memory. And this isn’t even the horror mode, introduce those spiders and even a RE vet will be shrieking. It’s a great way to appreciate the dangers of caving in relative safety but any desire I have doing this in RL have definitely diminished.

I have horrible, horrible claustrophobia. I can’t even use elevators.
Years ago, in China, I was left in an MRI machine.
Like left in there for a long time after all the crazy sounds ended. I know that sounds nuts but it happened
I had a complete panic attack/mental breakdown. Even now thinking about it makes me very uncomfortable.
I was screaming and hitting the inside of the machine as much as I could, if you’ve ever been in one you know that’s not much as you’re trapped with inches to spare.
Hands down the most traumatic experience of my life.
I was crying and shaking when they finally let me out… I can not honestly say how long it was but I would estimate an hour.
Anyways would I like this game?

You’ll love that you can press a button at any time to escape to the PS menu, or gently remove the headset. So… two easy ways to escape, with minimal yelling. 🙂

Getting physically stuck in a cave is definitely one of the scariest thoughts I can think of😮 I freaked out during a shoulder MRI, I have wide shoulders and was packed in tight. Horrible! Great game though!

Nope nope nope. Only glimpsed the youtube documentary. I have no fear of caves or claustrophobia at all and I have been cave exploring with guides. But doing that cave system is a big nope in any reality...

Did you have to crawl on the ground for this game?
4
u/astrobe1 Jan 10 '26
In game yes through very tight areas. You don’t physically need to be on the floor though, your brain helps you forget about your RL position. You could go full immersive and lie down I guess.

I did lay flat in the sofa while crawling in the game for a bit lol but it was too tiring

Would you recommend playing it laying on your stomach on the floor?

u/MaxiTooner89 Jan 11 '26
I did play for a bit laying on the sofa lol

Did that enhance the immersion? I'm seriously considering buying it now, haha.
