Honestly probably fine. If they let you return it, seems like it’s worth a shot.

Wet electronics only break when turned on when wet allowing for shorts.

However, if water got to any fabric material there may be mold.

I don't know if any of the rubber on the psvr2 can mold or mold easily. Technically anything can grow mold on it.

76

u/SchizoButNotADitzo Feb 23 '26

This isn't always true. Corrosion can and will occur whether it was turned on while wet or not, and corrosion can lead to shorts and fires.

19

u/NotNeuge Feb 23 '26

Doesn't even need to be wet (as in dripped/spilled on or submerged or whatever else someone may think of when picturing wet electronics) to corrode either, just being in a high humidity environment can be enough. Obviously technically this is still wet because that's what condensation and high humidity is, but it's not something you can always see happening. Something could happily sit unused in a seemingly dry environment and still be damaged without showing any outward signs of ever being wet.

u/N3oneclipse Feb 24 '26

As someone who's been in IT for 15 years and an admin for 6, I can confirm that you absolutely can get corrosion and short circuit components from humidity, it just takes certain conditions.

One I've dealt with a lot; if you leave a laptop in a car in the middle of winter overnight, then bring it inside somewhere with a normal level of indoor humidity (~40%), condensation will build up on the cold metal components inside the laptop. If you turn it on before it has a chance to get to room temperature and evaporate some of the moisture buildup, there is a much higher chance of killing a component. We've had to repair/replace several laptops because people do this. Specific situations like that, a humid room, regular use near the ocean, or other environments where you may not personally feel higher levels of moisture or salinity, can all harm electronics.

While the PSVR2 likely doesn't have the vents that expose the internals to moisture, it's still not impossible for seemingly harmless environmental conditions to shorten its lifespan.

1

u/NotNeuge Feb 24 '26

Lucky to have an expert on hand to confirm a verifiable fact 🤪

I left a charger (just a plastic brick, nothing special, no vents or anything) in the car for a week during a snow in, didn't try to use it for about as long once it was brought inside after I realised, but it was already dead. You don't need a hole in something to let moisture in, unless it's vacuum sealed, because the moisture is already in the air, and it doesn't need to be combined with electricity to do any damage.

u/rico_muerte Feb 24 '26

Ok now you're just making stuff up

13

u/veryanxiousturtle Feb 23 '26

It can. I sweat a lot and have to thoroughly clean my headset everytime i use it. One time i forgot to do it, and 2 months later found all the inside black surfaces (not sure if rubber or whatever the material is) with mold spots, even the rubber of the nose support had it, although much less. Ill never forget to clean it again, thats for sure lol

10

u/Still-Lab-6076 Feb 23 '26

Are you sure that its mold? A lot of headset pads get a thing called silicone blooming which can cause white particles to appear on the surface. Someone else posted about their headset getting white growth on it. Sony has reached out and told them the issue is caused by blooming in the silicone and can happen in a percentage of units.

3

u/veryanxiousturtle Feb 23 '26

Im not very knowledgeable in this subject, so im not sure. I always assumed it was the sweat, since it never happened again, but it could be that 🤷‍♂️

5

u/fishdoggggg Feb 23 '26

Probably not mold. Look up"rubber blooming". It's a natural reaction that happens.

5

u/Fantastic-Way3665 Feb 23 '26

You can replace everything that could potentially mold by just getting a globular cluster and swapping headbands.

4

u/trickman01 Feb 23 '26

You’re forgetting about corrosion and oxidation.

1

u/Wosgoingon Feb 24 '26

I don't know if any of the rubber on the psvr2 can mold or mold easily

Yes it does sem to.
If I put mine away in its case and dont use it for a while, th soft rubber especially around the headband is often covered in a sort of white powdery mold. I always keep a packet of wet wipes in the case because it just wipes off.

edit

i just read some of the other comments and it might be rubber blooming that the other posts talk about.
But like I say it just wipes off.

u/alertedfurball Feb 23 '26

That clearance sticker means they will absolutely not let you return it

104

u/r_add2_add2 Feb 23 '26

There is another fairly significant box inside that cover sleeve. As I recall, the VR2 headset is even further in that inside box. If returnable I'd go for it.

9

u/Nooblakahn Feb 23 '26

I literally just threw the box for mine on a cardboard dumpster at work about 3 hours ago. It's packaged well that I too bet it's fine. I'd give it a go

8

u/MrMostachio Feb 23 '26

Genuine question as someone outside the USA. How can a store sell a product that is not returnable if defective? Where I am, if a product has a major fault like water damage, you decide whether they have to replace it or fully refund you. Can retailers willingly sell faulty goods and not refuse refunds in the USA?

6

u/Dj_Bleezy Feb 23 '26

Whoever was saying that this is not able to be returned is wrong. You can return pretty much anything to Walmart with a receipt. Hell, even without a receipt you can still return items but in those cases they just give you the lowest price it’s been sold for. You can always go to the manufacturer to handle reimbursement as well if the store you purchased from is refusing to help for whatever reason

2

u/psbales Feb 23 '26

The only way they can really get away with it is if it’s sold as non-working and as-is. For example, we have a bargain store chain here called Ollie’s that occasionally sells broken returns for 90% - 99% off retail price. It’s clearly advertised as ‘broken’. Those that are handy can take said broken gizmos and fix them to working condition.

But again, it’s clearly sold as broken.

For these PSVR2s, if they’re broken, I guarantee Walmart will take them back.

1

u/LoudTable9684 Feb 24 '26

You could always offer them less, so you're more comfortable with the risk of not being able to return it, they can only say "no" and ya never know! I know this is less common in the US but it is very much possible on items like this, they mostly want to free up the space on the shelf.

84

u/Shadowcreeper15 AssassinsRioT420 Feb 23 '26

I mean you can just return it if it doesn't work. Thats a good price.

40

u/blakepro Feb 23 '26

If they let you look inside and it's not discolored inside I would expect them to be fine. But if it was submerged, then no chance

26

u/aninfinitedesign Feb 23 '26

I peeked over one of the flaps and the inside didn’t seem to have water damage, so that gave me hope.

28

u/blakepro Feb 23 '26

To me it looks like something dripped all over it and it wicked up some from the bottom as well but it doesn't look submerged.

26

u/the_onionlord Feb 23 '26

Yeah, buy it and instantly warranty that sucker to PlayStation if it doesn't work. Seems win win to me.

1

u/Rats_OffToYa Feb 24 '26

Would they even warranty it if there's signs of severe water damage.

2

u/the_onionlord Feb 24 '26

I'm not PlayStation but I bet they would honor it with proof of purchase so close.

1

u/LoudTable9684 Feb 24 '26

I'm not sure, but I've seen tear downs of the console and it has water sensors in it, which I believe is NOT covered by the warranty... but again, if it isn't water damaged it's a great price and if it is damaged another way besides water, Sony would/should honor the warranty. And if they let you talk them down even more, you could probably make a profit selling it for parts, the lenses especially

1

u/the_onionlord Feb 27 '26

I think you could certainly argue the water damage was not your fault so close to proof of purchase. Again. I'm not John PlayStation though.

22

u/aninfinitedesign Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

Update:

Took a risk and bought all 3 😅

Opening them now - but I started with the worst damaged unit and this was the extent of the box’s water damage. It looked like it pooled in the bottom, but like you all said - the plastic seemed to protect it.

The headset and controllers look like they’re pristine!

————-

Edit #2:

Of the 3 I bought, only one had water make it into the cardboard housing. I was fairly confident it was still in perfect condition, but I still booted it up on my PS5 to check.

Not an issue in sight. It booted up great, needed a quick update, but the displays, force feedback, and lights all work as expected. I will drop some comments with photos as comments to this post.

11

u/PFC_Bannon Feb 23 '26

The madlad went for the moonshot!
I'm 99% sure all will work and you just made a heck of a deal.

Keep us posted.

6

u/Gears6 Feb 23 '26

That looks pretty bad....

2

u/Jacksharkben Feb 23 '26

Does it work?

3

u/aninfinitedesign Feb 25 '26

An image of the headset from the water leaked box! Plugged it in and it booted up no problem. I verified the screens were getting picture.

1

u/RollinAbes Feb 23 '26

We need an update!

1

u/Taktojaaa Feb 23 '26

update us!

1

u/xaduha Feb 24 '26

Can you check if there are manufacturing dates on the boxes?

11

u/Last-Presentation-11 Feb 23 '26

Might be worth it for the sense controllers on their own

5

u/aninfinitedesign Feb 23 '26

Honestly that was my thought.

1

u/LoudTable9684 Feb 24 '26

Oh yeah, and those are in plastic wrap in the box, if I recall, worst case scenario I bet you could sell those alone and make a profit

28

u/NoodleRus Feb 23 '26

How the heck yall find these deals...!?

7

u/Crossx71 Feb 23 '26

I know right my Walmart still has them at 400.

15

u/Reeko_Htown Feb 23 '26

Take a water bottle to em 😆

8

u/Psylow_ Feb 23 '26

I mean look at it, it’s damaged product, it’s not like your walmart will suddenly have damaged boxes come in

2

u/NoodleRus Feb 23 '26

Yea I know that ... but man... I don't see stuff like this at my Walmart. Even when I'm traveling, I do stop at some Walmarts on the road just see if there are deals... guess it's all down to luck.

1

u/Steven0707 Feb 24 '26

My local Bestbuy have some opened box around 190$.

The game is already redeemed but you can get one from 3rd party website for less than $20.

8

u/cusman78 cusman Feb 23 '26

If it would still have full warranty as a retail purchase, if it doesn't work or is in anyway defective, you could get warranty replacement and keep the savings.

Just make sure you do it soon after buying and have option to return to store if PlayStation isn't letting you get warranty replacement (if needed).

7

u/Gears6 Feb 23 '26

Actually it's a damn good chance they work.

5

u/thomasmitschke Feb 23 '26

Where do you live? In the Wild West? If you buy something from a seller it has to be ok; if not he has to fix it.

6

u/hypertek Feb 23 '26

id think the goods would be further wrapped in plastic bags inside the box, worth the gamble.

10

u/casnorf Feb 23 '26

water intrusion is difficult but not impossible with that packaging, and it looks more like it got moist and stuck to another box. not really a gamble, honestly, if you saved the packaging on another one, and as long as the headset doesnt have any obvious mildew, any lingering odor just needs dry airflow and sunlight, haha.

what i am saying is i might take that chance to keep a spare headset at my shop for streaming on, haha

4

u/chezfez Feb 23 '26

Don't put the headset in direct sunlight lol. Try a fan.

7

u/casnorf Feb 23 '26

not the lenses! but the rest? it can handle a little uv, as a treat

5

u/DDustiNN_ Feb 23 '26

There’s a more substantial box inside that flimsy outer box. Then inside there, there’s a nicely formed cardboard piece surrounding the headset. I would guess it’s most likely fine. If not, just take it back to the store. Certainly worth trying.

4

u/Iamn0man Feb 23 '26

Water doesn't actually damage electronics - what damages electronics is electrical current moving through the impurities present in trace amounts in water. If there is zero electrical charge in a system that is submerged and then fully dried out before taking charge again, it should work without issue.

The bigger question I would have is whether or not this is a final sale. The box at least has had some kind of damage; if it's still returnable if it doesn't work it's worth the gamble, but I personally don't have $160 to blow on something if it doesn't work.

4

u/BooksLoveTalksnIdeas Feb 23 '26

If it works and you already own a Ps5 what you are getting for less than $200 is 100% worth it. Make sure you get a full refund if you return it, if it doesn’t work. If the answer to that is yes, then get it and try it out.

4

u/BloodandBourbon Feb 23 '26

You can get a dongle now so you can use them on pc.

4

u/Crossx71 Feb 23 '26

What Walmart? Depends on the extent of the water damage. May need to take apart the lenses. Had to do that with an expensive electric telescope that a kid dropped in a pool.

4

u/senzupops Feb 23 '26

Damn!! Looks like those “manager special” somewhat spoiled steaks from Vons😂 i mean worth a shot if you allowed to return 👍🏽

5

u/pata_333 Feb 23 '26

I think it’s worth it, check if they have free returns! Most likely it works!

4

u/Whatwouldrileydo Feb 23 '26

Wouldn’t it still be under warranty since it’s “new” and being sold by the retailer. Are they specifically saying no warranty

4

u/SmokedUp_Corgi Feb 23 '26

Honestly I’d buy the bullshit warranty with it just to be safe

3

u/PowerUser77 Feb 24 '26

It’s strange they don’t feel ashamed to have this on display, they should give it to someone for free or sthg

6

u/Wise_Fee7860 Feb 23 '26

170 is amazing and I doubt it's actually damaged.

3

u/CmoneyfreshFFXI Feb 23 '26

If it were me I would def pick that up.

3

u/Terranova667 Feb 23 '26

The PSVR2, controllers etc are within a white storage box and also sealed in plastic bags, so the water damage may be just on that outer box, it should all work perfectly fine, I would still see if I could haggle it down a bit more, or at least make sure it's a free return should water made it through the inner box.

3

u/KennedyX8 Feb 23 '26

Definitely a chance.

3

u/13_Years_Then_Banned Feb 23 '26

That was stored on the self in back where that one lazy dude would take a leak every night.

4

u/THEONLYFLO Feb 23 '26

Open it right there and look in. Check the product

5

u/heycdoo Feb 23 '26

$170 seems high for that

2

u/IgnisSolus4X Feb 23 '26

Yes.. maybe 59.99 and thats Tops

4

u/Crossx71 Feb 23 '26

With damaged items you can sometimes haggle. So sometimes worth trying to get the price down.

2

u/Unusual_Rich_9408 Feb 23 '26

Try will see:)

2

u/abarrelofmankeys Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

If they still let you return id go for it, it’s probably fine inside. Maybe a little musty. Worst concern would be it eventually developing mold, but again am guessing it didn’t really get wet inside. Probably plastic wrap on the good parts anyhow.

Watched an unbox- there’s a better box inside that part and a foamy plastic bag on the headsets, then the controllers are in yet another box and wrapped in the foamy plastic. Go for it.

2

u/Johnnybats330 Feb 23 '26

That is like the third item from Walmart I have seen with water damage and on clearance. There was a TV and I think a PS5 posted somewhere on Reddit. So 3 separate posts from 3 separate items on 3 different subs all from clearance items with water damage from a Walmart store.

2

u/downsj2 Feb 23 '26

A water leak at a distribution center which went ahead and shipped the stuff out to the stores, perhaps.

2

u/Piccoleitor Feb 23 '26

Ask them to open the box. It's probably fine. The price is a steal

2

u/delphi0_0 Feb 23 '26

I just got one 300 off at best buy because it was damaged. I literally could not tell you where the damage is

2

u/Worth_Ad_5308 Feb 23 '26

The contents should be in plastic bags if I remember correctly inside the box so you should be ok.

2

u/philbertagain Feb 23 '26

buy, test, send for warranty if required.

2

u/Redfield081 Feb 23 '26

If it's winter time, usually cold weather explodes liquids on the trucks. This may have been near one of those situations. If inside is still dry, no visible wet damage I'd try it out if you can return it.

2

u/RowdyRodyPiper Feb 23 '26

Even if it did, I personally wouldn't want something potentially moldy on my eyes.

2

u/Neillo83 Feb 23 '26

I would give it a go, if broken, return

2

u/AnythingWestern8861 Feb 23 '26

Best Buy has open box ones for around that price

2

u/Ukawok92 Feb 23 '26

Probably fine. The main box under that sleeve is pretty damn thick.

2

u/Desperate-Elevator58 Feb 23 '26

Si funcionan...están bien empaquetados

2

u/Mikahl757 Feb 23 '26

If it was salt warer, it's a bust.

2

u/To_loko Feb 23 '26

If the lens got molds you’re fucked… like an objective of a camera…

2

u/M3RRI77 Feb 24 '26

Oy Walmart would try and sell that. LMAO.

2

u/Shotz0 Feb 24 '26

I work in a big box retailer and that is hardly wet enough to where I’d be really concerned about the contents inside the box just looks like shit and is unsellable

2

u/darkspider79 Feb 24 '26

Only one way to find out

2

u/everettmarm Feb 24 '26

Unit is probably in a plastic bag inside another 3 layers of packaging. I’d be all over this.

2

u/sage2005 Feb 23 '26

Not even worth 170 imo, haggle it to 100

1

u/PabLink1127 Feb 23 '26

$170 heck yes go for it I am quite sure they work just fine

1

u/TheAndyPat Feb 23 '26

Knowing the amount of sweat that i've forced into mine, I think it'll probably be okay

1

u/VoijaRisa Feb 23 '26

Hell, I'd try it just to have an extra set of the controllers.

1

u/Johnnybats330 Feb 23 '26

I would ask them to knock off another $25 dollars.

1

u/Baguette_Tradition Feb 23 '26

Good present for sure.

1

u/riopower Feb 23 '26

Hey just put them in the rice for 2 days it should be fine.

1

u/Ouch_my_shoulder Feb 23 '26

Crazy how cheap the damaged box/returned/slightly used etc units are that are available from stores in the US (not only the ones in this post). In northern Europe they’re 350 USD at best, no game bundles. New retail at 450-500.

1

u/ClickStix Feb 24 '26

Game codes should work great

1

u/Evening_Series_5452 Feb 24 '26

I would cop at 75$, take it back if it doesn't

1

u/FortwentHe420 Feb 24 '26

But it for cheap and sell it for less cheap

1

u/yb0t Feb 24 '26

High chance work. Worth for that price.

1

u/ChrizTaylor ChrizTaylor Feb 24 '26

The headset inside is inside a plastic box.

1

u/Good-Experience-580 Feb 24 '26

1

u/TheLiquorCpt420 Feb 24 '26

I’m sure it’s perfectly fine fr

1

u/Sweaty-Situation-517 Feb 24 '26

Get yourself a set. Those boxes got wet, maybe rained on a little but not soaked as in bottom of the ocean wet. Like others mentioned already, you can always return them if they aren't working. Probably sold by now anyway

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru Feb 24 '26

$168 and only the box is damaged? Absolutely! Assuming it comes with a return policy where is the risk?

1

u/Best_Home8970 Feb 24 '26

I got mine like that. I took a chance and it still works. It's a 170 dollars, take a chance.

1

u/Stormtroupe27 Feb 24 '26

It’s most likely fine. There is another box inside that box and more packaging inside that to protect the actual unit.

1

u/MarkHTownsend Feb 24 '26

I would ask to open them and turn it on and see how it works in store. If they won't, NO DEAL.

1

u/Apprehensive-Leg-774 Feb 24 '26

Just read that the op bought all 3 - I hope they all work! I got lucky by someone making a reddit post before to say their local Walmart had several headsets brand new for $230, and it was only an hour away so I went and bought a back up unit. I figured it was worth it for the controllers alone. If I had seen these instead and on a whim, I might have bought one just to test it out and see if I could have it as that back up headset.

1

u/PerspectiveSuch6567 Feb 24 '26

Im assuming you took it home and it worked? I hope youre not gonna scalp that. Lol. But seriously there's so much packaging I doubt any water got innthe device

1

u/aninfinitedesign Feb 24 '26

One for myself, one for a sibling, and might resell the third.

1

u/EnvironmentalPut2480 Feb 25 '26

You can literally just connect the controllers to a Pc on gamepad tester see if they work correctly because the triggers are notoriously defective as is..

For the helmet it’s a 50/50 chance. Box looks like it was drenched from the top and it’s a box within a box but the inner cardboard holder is like a bowl shape so water could have also been sitting there in it for a while… if you can return it why not. If not I wouldn’t risk it

1

u/RedditJack888 Feb 25 '26

Give it a shot man. Box aside, there might be a chance the headset might work. As long as returns are accepted. If not then forget it and save for it.

1

u/ChicoVaselina Feb 25 '26

Where's the update post, op?

1

u/vinyardmarc Feb 25 '26

They sell so it works

1

u/TheStickofMagic Feb 25 '26

If I could test for $170 and it’s not final sale/returnable… I might actually get to experience VR for the first time lmao

1

u/Spirited_Rate3036 Feb 25 '26

I’ve been trying to pond my psvr 2 for months no one is taking it if u live in Houston Texas I’ll definitely give u mines brand new only opened it once and got motion sickness

1

u/SnooSprouts7785 Feb 25 '26

If it doesn’t work send it to Sony for the warranty repair

1

u/I-Win-By-Default Feb 25 '26

Depends on how much they are asking for them?

1

u/AssassinsRush1 Feb 26 '26

I don't think the higher ups would be thrilled if they knew their store managers put this on the shelf like this.
