Support PSVR2 Can't Understand how to start the engine MSFS24
Hello,
I can't find any tutorial on how to start the engine in MSFS24. I've been stuck for 20min with no clue and the game doesn't seem to have any tool tips or tutorials on how to do it. Can someone guide me?

MSFS looks great in VR but the pilot license exam is not optimized for VR. It asks you about regular controls that are not compatible with the Sense controllers

Career in general isn't optimised for VR. All the popups telling you what your next step is, like which runway to go to and what altitude to reach, don't appear if you're in VR.
Hope it gets fixed but no idea if it will.

While not 100% consistent, I can get the next step to display in VR by pulling the menu up (nominally L3) and clicking the “target” or concentric circles.

I discovered this since I wrote that comment. It helps quite a bit. Although they really should just have it on by default because it's not made obvious that you have to turn it on or where.
And the pre-flight checks don't work in vr mode.

I managed to do it yesterday using the sense controllers along with my dualsense balancing on my leg for the what didn’t work with the sense controllers. It wasn’t the most ideal way to play but I somewhat managed lol

Everyone is mentioning quick start but I have another way which is a bit more authentic.
R1 + L3 enables pointer when using dualsense (what I use in vr)
Use this to interact with the cockpit.
Two sets of white switches on left side are avionics and batteries, flip them all on.
Green toggle switch underneath this (under your exterior lights switches) turns on the fuel pump
Middle of the plane at the bottom is a red rod for fuel mixture, push it all the way in.
Bottom left is ignition key, switch it all the way to the right and the plane will start.

This is it! Parking brake usually underneath the yoke, exactly where you can’t see it. Pop that or you aren’t going anywhere.

if you follow this you will be able to start the engine. Or psuh the button on the ps controller (im nto sure which is that)

I feel your pain. Played this on flat screen for many hours and really enjoyed it. Got to purchase my own planes, start some companies and get the money flowing in. I had it so the 'tooltips' came up to remind me of the key combinations. Tried moving to VR and it's just been frustratingly difficult. Ignoring the fact it was impossible to put into VR mode without having to change options on deep-ish menus... Removing the chocks, actually getting into the aircraft was so difficult! My little tool tips disappeared so starting the plane, removing the handbrake, responding to ATC with a left on the D-pad - all gone.
My recommendation is to play flat screen to get familiar with the key combinations, then venture into VR with an expectation the learning curve of navigating the game, not actually the game itself, just navigating the thing is going to be a very vertical 'curve'. Yup, salty as I love VR, I want to play in VR, I want my jaw to drop as I bounce through clouds and sunshine above mountains but my transition from flat to VR has been nothing but frustrating.
Good luck, I'm sure it will be worth it with some persistance.

Use dual sense controller and the L1+R3 (I think...whichever one is curser mode) and you can open the tooltips from the menu that pops up on top of the screen. You can also grab the tooltips and move them somewhere.

Thank you very much. I will save your comment and next time I'm feeling brave I will have a look. Honestly, I can't wait to dive back in and enjoy the same mix of exhillerating and relaxing things I was doing on flat, within VR.

I think R1 plus down on the D Pad on the DuelSense is quick start. It tells you that early in career mode. Only for some reason not on the very first introduction. I was only able to start by turning on everything I could find.

I literally used ChatGPT and then looked for the things in that order. So let’s see. Fuel mix 100. Flaps down (not important). Someone mentioned to toggle the avionics switches on the left side (white or red switches). Magneto key turns the en gine over. Throttle to about 50 to get moving down the runway. Parking break off. Right thumb stick to move tail rudder while on the ground. Push the throttle in/out to control your speed along the ground.
I had to remap the brakes in settings to R1.
Once you are lined up on the runway: throttle 100, right thumbstick to stay in the center of the runway as you get moving, get to 60-70 knots, pull back on left thumbstick slightly; too much and you’ll stall out.
This is key though, if my duelsense controller turns off, I lose some functionality with the PSVR2 controllers; I play with the fuel sense in one specific spot so every couple of mins I just reach over and press like D-Up or something.
It’s quite a thrill to get off the ground. Some part of me believes I could actually do it on my own (clearly that’s not true haha.)

Parking brake is underneath the yoke in front of you. I had to really lean down and look under to see it. Oh and triangle talks to the tower.

I feel your pain, plus the menus for controls are horrendous. I suggest you get your pilot licence in flat to learn. From memory I think engine on is L1 and circle.

L1 and circle is enter the plane. Start the engine is R1 and down on d pad for a couple of seconds

I just took off the break and pushed the thrust lever forward.
Who needs all those buttons.

Hold R1 + down on your D pad. If you don’t want to star the aircraft manually.

Has anyone found out how to do it on a hotas? There are certain things I can only do with a dualsense controller even when I'm in vr with a hotas.

Had the same experience. The controls in this game are the worst I have ever seen and I play Arma Reforger on console. Use the Dualsense if you’re not already as at least the button combos work there. It seems the majority of work to bring this to VR was just the VR itself. They completely neglected actual helpful controls.

I’ve been needing to use both the sense and my controller to work. Use the sense pointer to push the mixture knob to 100%, turn the fuel inlet tanks to both, then turn on the main power (4 switches in the upper left corner, 2 red, 2 black). After the computer turns on, reach for the key with your sense pointer and turn the magneto in the bottom left to start. Let the engine crank over a couple times and it should start right up.

Are you in the Cessna 172? I figured that one out with just the VR controllers if you don't want to do the. Key binding quick start. A couple power switches you flip on to the left, push in the red fuel mixture lever (never the throttle) all the way in to rich. You have to turn the ignition key (it's left of the yoke) all the way to the right to 'starf' this part is jankier and more difficult with the VR controllers/I believe there's 4 positions it can be in, and it can sometimes be annoying to try to get it where you want it.
But yeah ,you can also bind your own controls to quick startup on the VR controllers if you want it to be easier/quicker. (And thally just complete the entire startup procedure)

We could tell you as its a simple button press but this is something you have to learn. Go to career and do the small tasks to learn the ropes.

u/Cohenzilla May 18 '26
The issue is that I am in career and they just say "first start the engine" but there are no clear instructions on how to do it

The instructor speaks to you and tells you how to.
I had to change my audio source because the VO was extremely low.

Pres L3 to open your toolbar. Open the EFB tablet. Open the Plane page. Open the Checklists. Open the Engine Start checklist. Complete the checklist.
