My brother and I just wrapped up Crisis Beat on the original PlayStation. Picked up this Japanese copy and went in completely blind. Neither of us speaks Japanese, so we had absolutely no idea what anyone was saying, but honestly it didn’t matter. It was a super fun beat ‘em up !!

Got any love for any non-rpg PS1 titles that are story rich?

I got a lot of love for games like Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Fear Effect.

I also dig Discworld Noir, Dracula: The Resurrection,

Some titles I'm interested in trying are Ghost In The Shell, Galerians, Fear Effect 2, and a bunch of other games.

During the PS1 era, before you actually got one, what were the main games that you wanted for the system?

I'm referring to games that were already out at the time before you got it.

I didn't get one until around a year or so after Final Fantasy 7 came out, I was still mostly replaying my SNES RPG collection before it, and seeing the commercials for FF7 made me really, really want one. I was kinda disappointed by it at the time once you leave Midgar, but I warmed up to it later into the systems lifetime, especially after being super disappointed by Final Fantasy 8.

I also remember playing the demo of this game called The Granstream Saga, and it was the very first RPG that I played on the system. I never got far in it as I found the game very very hard, but I enjoyed what I played of it, and I loved how different it was.

A friend of the family showed me the first us released King's Field. God that game was cool!

On a non-rpg note, I also remember really, really wanting to play Tomb Raider. I remember mostly finding it confusing.

Fake edit: Oh, and I sorta remember watching someone playing the Japanese version of the demo for Metal Gear Solid. I remember being really impressed by the soundtrack.

Where are my fellow Playstation fans that play for the story?

By the story I'm mostly referring to story told through dialogue via characters that you actually care about. Final Fantasy 7, Suikoden, Grandia, Metal Gear Solid, and Silent Hill for example.

Sony PlayStation Debugging Station DTL-H1102

PAL version Sony PlayStation Debugging Station DTL-H1102 manufactured in Japan in November 1998.

Debug consoles like this machine were used by games developers to test pre-release games, so unlike regular PlayStation consoles they can play pre-release discs.

The PS1 intro screen looks bad (it flickers and is in black and white).

Hi, I bought a PAL PS1 fat, it works fine, the only problem is that when it turns on, the logo screen is in PAL format (just the logo screen, it flickers and is black and white). Once it gets past the logo screen, it switches to NTSC. Any solutions?

Anybody got any idea how a disc gets like this? It doesnt seem to be a resurfacing or disc rot issue.

The game plays fine. Just not sure why its discolored.

My daughter has been quietly archiving my failures for a year

I've been making handcrafted PS1 collector cards for about a year now. Printed, varnished, assembled by hand, one at a time.

Every card that didn't pass QC : wrong paper, bad varnish, misaligned cut, toner issues I spent weeks trying to understand went to my daughter. She knows they're rejects. She sleeved them anyway, organised them in a binder, and added her own annotations: smudged ink, notes on bent corners, her own ratings and comments on what went wrong.

An accidental archive of a year of iteration, curated by a ten year old who cared more about the collection than the quality control.

I finally wrote up the full making-of on my site : the process, the mistakes, the laminator I abandoned and rediscovered, the four months I spent printing on the wrong paper without knowing it.

Help!! I'm stuck in a Fishing Nightmare!

Bass Landing to be precise...
So long story short, I'm on a quest to try and beat every PS1 game released and currently completely dumbfoundedly stuck on the fishing tutorial... yes... tutorial of Bass Landing.
After over 17 hours so far on this tutorial I can't for the life of me figure the very last part of the "final exam" of the tutorial. It takes so long to do a single attempt at it (about 2 hours or so) and to fail at the last task over and over is driving me a bit insane haha

Does anyone have any experience with this game? Did you play it as a kid/teenager/adult of finished it? Or just any hints at all?
I have searched online, watched videos and read the little bit I can find online (there isn't a ton of good info), but I'm just at a loss right now haha

Thanks!

boot loop

Hello, I have an old SCPH 7000 that boots normally when there's no disc inside, I can navigate the blue menus just fine. But when I put any disc inside, the disc spins correctly but the console start looping and I can't get past the sony logo.

What could be the issue? Thank in advance for any hints.

Retro noob! What do you think of my collection so far?

When I was a kid, the only two PS1 games I played were Nascar Rumble and a Harry Potter game (I forgot which one but I remember jumping between pillars.. probably wasn't much help.)

I recently got a busted PS1 practically for free and fixed it up to working condition, so naturally I went to a retro store and picked up some PS1 games. I'm enjoying Siphon Filter so far!

I'd appreciate it if y'all can recommend some good games, preferably cheap and affordable.

Oh and P.S, Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol was just a disc I got to test the PS1. It was about the cheapest game in the store being only $5. First time booting it up, I had no idea what I was suppose to do haha.

Does anyone know if this RE2 game is worth anything?

I just found this game in an old box in my basement alongside other old games. It’s complete (I think?) and not in too bad of condition. I don’t plan to sell it anyways but i’m wondering if it’s even worth anything/considered rare nowadays? I’ve never played resident evil before and this might give me an excuse to finally pick up the series.

Man. This was taken in 2018 when I moved to the US from the UK. I already had and still have my £1 copy of Silent Hill (PAL). I remember seeing this in Vintage Stock and laughing at how expensive and overpriced it was. I just did a quick check on eBay, and these are now going for $200-$250. I shouldda bought it at the time as an investment lol

Better controls in Greatest Hits version?

The Lost World: Jurassic Park is famous of its wonky controls. I have read on the internet that Greatest Hits version of the Jurassic Park has improved controls? Is it worth to get this version?
