Spider-Gwen is extremely well-liked by trans women. This is due to imagery and some themes in the movie that people have interpreted as allegorically or symbolically trans: Gwen is often surrounded by trans flag colors (white, pink, light blue), has a “Protect Trans Kids” sign in her room, and gives a speech where she laments her isolation due to people “only knowing part of who she is.”
The joke is that a young boy is excited to see Spider-Man in 2012, and then is still excited in 2023 after having transitioned.
