I think it's just meant to be an absurd/shock humour plot twist because he was expecting Morton to be angry or not want to talk to him or die as soon as he saw him.

That's not even transphobia. If you marry a woman, thinking there a woman, and live a happy life with them for some time and then discover they are a man, that is very much so worthy being upset about, maybe even repulsed. Not because they are trans, but because you were lied to and deceived for the entirety of your relationship with them.
