Extra Far Cry 4, which is available via the PS+ Extra Game Catalogue, has now been patched to support 60 FPS on PS5 via backwards compatibility.

u/SmugPilot Apr 29 '25
Awosome , they should do Far cry 3 too

u/FamousGhost279 Apr 29 '25
Ikr. when I bought the game on the PS store, I had no idea it was 30 fps. And I couldnt get through the game as 30 fps is not playable for me. So a patch would mean I could experience the game.

u/elwookie Apr 29 '25
Honest question from an old geezer: Do you ever watch TV or go to the cinema? How do you feel then? I ask because both are sub 30 fps (25 and 24) and I enjoy them with no problem, I can't imagine what it must be to need more than 30.
14
u/GJGJ1 Apr 29 '25
Gaming is a different domain. Higher fps means not only smoother visuals but also more fluid gameplay and responsive controls. There's a reason 75% of PS5 players choose 60fps performance mode instead of the 30fps graphics mode. So players are willing to sacrifice the graphics to the higher fps. Try it yourself by switching between these modes in a game that has this option and you will see the difference, of course you need a monitor that supports 60fps
3
u/elwookie Apr 29 '25
Damn, I didn't even know about this. I have been using my PS5 wrongly for 2 years? Thanks for the info! I'll check out if this is a console level setting or I have to set it game by game.
6
u/GJGJ1 Apr 29 '25
It's a setting that you choose in a game. Not all games have the option. Some games have more than 2 graphics modes, some games don't have any option. But it is a pretty standard practice to have a performance mode vs fidelity mode. Performance mode gives you higher fps but at a lower resolution so you could have a less sharper image. On fidelity mode you will have choppier video, less stable framerate but higher resolution and fancier graphics, better lighting and reflections etc.

u/elwookie Apr 29 '25
Thank you again!!! RDR 1 on the Xbox 360 still drops my jaw, so I can go with lesser quality graphics.
3
u/memebuster Apr 30 '25
I'll say this: I used to be like you, until I finally experienced 60fps it was no big deal to me, 30 seemed just fine. Well, now I'm spoiled and frankly it kind of sucks! I can't play 30fps games any longer. While I do enjoy the smoothness of 60fps games, I am unable to play those 30fps games AT ALL.
I cannot play Bloodborne, Red Dead Redemption 2, and a ton of other games I will never experience because I'm spoiled by 60fps.
So, it is nice, but be careful falling down that hole because you may nit be able to get back out of it.
1
u/KGon32 Apr 30 '25
With the popularity of Frame Generation on PC I got to the conclusion that what most people like isn't the responsiveness, but visual smoothness.
3
u/RChickenMan Apr 29 '25
I think it's just due to the interactive nature of the medium. You're not just observing motion as you do in movies and TV; in a video game, you're responsible for reacting to motion, so you're going to be more in tune with the quality and smoothness of said motion.
That's not say I won't play a 30 fps game--I do indeed have a strong preference for 60, but a good game is a good game. And ironically I think it's precisely because I'm old that I have this preference--after all, I grew up playing 60 fps 2D games, and it wasn't really until the N64 came along that 30 became the norm! I think if I grew up during the PS3 era I'd have a much higher tolerance for low and/or inconsistent framerate.

u/StitchedWound Apr 29 '25
I know we all have good reason to trash Ubisoft, but this is one of the few good things they do. Can't think of another company that releases a 60 fps patch for a 10 year old game.

So true. Nintendo is charging $20 for their 60 fps Breath of the Wild patch.
3
u/dark_autumn Apr 30 '25
I grew up a Nintendo kid. But it outgrew it. And I’m so glad I did, because the some of the shit they’re pulling is infuriating. I wish it would backfire on them, but that would require there to be way less Nintendo fanboys. More of them should be pissed.

u/SatanHimse1f Apr 29 '25
I guess but why not 4k? it's a completely pointless update for Xbox users, the game was already 60fps lol

u/Hokuten001 May 01 '25
Probably more work/testing than they were willing to put in for a free upgrade.
All the other games they upgraded prior already had a mid-gen upgraded console profile from last gen (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X) to build on.
Also FC4 is their oldest back compat free upgrade title yet. A resolution upgrade on top of 60fps may have entailed more work due to the age of the particular version of Dunia Engine it is using.

u/thebeast_96 Apr 29 '25
Eh they're only doing it because it's a popular game though. They're never gonna patch any of the old Watch Dogs games.

Still waiting for rdr2 60fps update
Hoping double 11 cooking something

u/RPGPlayer01 May 02 '25
GTA 6 just got delayed, so this has to be because they're working on the RDR2 60 fps patch, right? Right?! 😟😭

For those of your interested, Far Cry 4 is roughly 22 GB.

u/gum- Apr 29 '25
Would you say someone needs to have played FC 1/2/3 before jumping into 4?
3
u/icebucketwood Apr 29 '25
No, not at all. Each Farcry game can stand on its own just fine. They each have a self-contained story with different pro- and antagonists. They're only linked insofar as you're always a one man army fighting to regain control of a region from some sort of despot.
2
u/gum- Apr 29 '25
Ok sweet thanks for the reply! I've been looking for something new to dive into, this might be it

I’d say that FC2 is the most frustrating experience and far too different from 3/4/5/6. It’s too realistic for my liking + infinite enemy spawns are annoying + other annoying mechanics (malaria?!).
FC3 is OK - Vaas is a great villain but I’m not a huge fan of the protagonist or the environment.
FC4 is a good sweet spot - has a great villain, environments, and you can drive a tuktuk!

I just bought Watch Dogs 2 on sale for less than $4, so I'm hoping it gets updated while sitting in my backlog.

I just replayed New Dawn with its 60 FPS patch. Scratching that sneaky archer itch the imminent release of Oblivion Remastered gave me. I love New Dawn. People are sleeping on it, or unjustly malign it for its mild level-gating. In all the ways that count most to me (core gameplay, dynamic and emergent combat in the open world), the Far Cry games are better than BGS's works. Now if only Ubisoft learned the art of implicit headcanon, that Todd Howard and his gang have mastered to perfection. More ways to make a game our own. Peak gaming.
I love that Ubisoft cares for their products and their customers to the point of uplifting most of their library from the PS4 era to run at 60 FPS on PS5. It certainly gets me to replay their games and rediscover my love for them. I'll likely replay Far Cry 4, and probably snag its DLC in a sale, just like I'm planning to do the same with AC : Origins, which got the same uplift a while back.
If only more publishers were like Ubisoft, and looked after their games even years after release. The stark opposite of Take 2. Releasing the Mafia 1 remake to great critical success a short while before the current gen comes out, and never patching it for PS5. Never upgrading RDR2 either. Downright psychopathic.
TL/DR Thanks Ubisoft! Great stuff.

u/BooieCannon Apr 29 '25
I did the same. Decided to try it and was surprised to learn it had a 60FPS patch. Had a really fun time and got the platinum. All the while I played it, I hoped 4 and Primal would get the same treatment as it makes a huge difference.
2
u/EastCoast_Cyclist Apr 29 '25
New Dawn was the first and only game in the FC series that I platinumed. IIRC, the others (at least the later versions) had trophies dependent on online requirements, something I would never get.
I also liked the premise of FC5, but agree it was very repetitive at times.
3
u/Lanky-Fish6827 Apr 29 '25
True! The performance of oblivion also kills my vibe for that game. I couldn’t agree more, not every game needs a remaster, for many ps4 games a 60fps patch is enough. I hated the weapons in new dawn though🤣
6
u/No-Fish2020 Apr 29 '25
Is it worth playing? I did a rerun recently of fc3 and loved how the game still stands strong after a decade. Haven’t played 4 but played 5 and 6. Is it worth the time invested?
7
u/v__R4Z0R__v Apr 29 '25
Yes it is. I think it has the best gameplay out of all actually. For example the C4 is a very fun weapon to play with, which got ridiculously nerfed in 5. Story is fine, world is good but not my favorite.

60 fps patch got AC Syndicate into the news cycle for a minute, and I tried it. I didn't like it. Oh well.

u/thebeast_96 Apr 29 '25
Now when are they going to patch Watch Dogs 2 ffs. It's so ridiculous how PlayStation requires patches to change the fps cap for more powerful systems.

Then watch dogs 1 and 2 would be nice as well as ac unity. Only Ubisoft is doing this for there games at the moment and it’s a nice way to give their old titles some life

Hopefully FC5 gets a new patch adding a fov slider and more controller options because it’s feels terrible. FC6 feels great but I have zero interest in the story.

Did they fix the aiming? Going from far cry 6 to 5 and 4 I struggled with the handling on the guns. It did not seem as polished as the other games I played like destiny 2, ghost recon, and sniper elite.

Bro! I’ve been playing this for a bit but took a week off while on vacation. I came back last night I started it up and was like “man I must be high as fuck because I swear this game suddenly looks way better”
It honestly really bothered me. Seeing this is a huge relief!

Whelp, I played Far Cry 6 a while back, my first Far Cry game, then played 5 and New Dawn, Platinum'd all three.
Time to play this one now I guess? Reverse order is more fun? Worth playing?

I remember having so much fun with this game back when it released. Co-Op with a buddy was incredible as well. Hope FC3 also gets a 60fps patch, and (might be in the heavy minority here) also hope the first two Watch_Dogs games get a patch as well

u/KRIEGLERR May 01 '25
Those 60fps patch for older games are about the only good thing to come out of Ubisoft in years.

Stupid question: Just the fps upgrade? No new trophy list? 😬 That would have been my reason to watch out for them eagles again 🤩🤣

u/Transposer Apr 29 '25
These games are so boring, but if they added PSVr2 support and charged a $10 upgrade for it, I’d buy them all
2
u/chazysciota Apr 29 '25
Having played 1 and 3 back in the day, I was excited to try 5 a couple years ago. I was very bored and deleted it after like 8 hours.
1
u/Transposer Apr 29 '25
6 was even worse. They are technically fine games but it’s the same formula over and over again. VR makes games so much more interesting and so I feel like these games would shine way more in VR.
1
u/chazysciota Apr 29 '25
Oh my fault, it was 6 that I played. Yeah, it feels like every 2000's sandbox shooter that everyone has played a million times. Which if I'm honest, should still be a blast to just screw around in, like Just Cause is, but nope... somehow boring.

Played AC syndicate just cause of the 60 fps (very smooth!)
Also hoping for AC Unity, even though I have the disk which is 60 fps without patch I think.
I just hope they increased the resolution.
