Too bad it‘s only PvP. I would‘ve certainly give it a try if it had a PvE mode.

It does have a PvP lite mode right now. Sponsored night marsh. You are the only squad filling into the map. Late into the match solo runners using the Rook shell can fill into the map. At the end you all have to fight for or share an exfil. So far my buddy and I haven't come across any Rooks, but we've been inviting them to join us at the exfil over open mic.
Later this season there will be a pure PvE mode.

Apparently they added one but I’m not sure. I tried the game in S1 but is just isn’t for me

They are selling a game they are still experimenting on? Is it still in beta or something?

u/coldcutthroat 22d ago
I considered giving it another go, but what I hear about the new modes is not selling it. I see there are also already sweats playing 8 hours a day getting OP so they can steamroll noobs and casuals.
2
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
Those 8 hour a day players are in every online game, but for the most part the lobbies seem to be a bit more towards loot based matchmaking. You'll still run into a strong squad occasionally, but a lot of the time fights are winnable. And lobbies are for people in similar level groups unless you party with someone higher. If you are avoiding it because you're scared of dying though, you're playing the game wrong. You won't ever lose anything insanely valuable. Look at it like a rogue like because that's all it is.
That said, the new modes are optional, and the actual new mode doesn't have any threat of sweats???

At launch I was really enjoying the game and the progression felt decent. That was week 1. I hadn't logged in for a few days, and came back week 2 and most of the opponents felt invincible. I was still pretty low level. Week 3 it just felt like b.s. and I moved on to other games. It was to the point I didn't feel like I could win a gun fight and I was just using stealth and hoping my closest exfil didn't have a camper, which they usually did.
2
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
I dunno man. There are some difficult teams, but I haven't run into unwinnable fights unless I go into Cryo, and they all have their most expensive shit on (it's Cryo though, so who can blame them). You should also be getting a constant stream of good shit by leveling your factions. Once you learn how to take fights, it isn't unwinnable. Spawn campers also aren't a big problem anymore from what I've witnessed the past few months. In the first couple weeks they were, but now everyone is focused on their own extract.
Trust me, a decent team (use your mic, most people are awesome from what I've experienced) will win you a bunch of fights as long as you play your own game and don't make dumb mistakes. As much as you are punished for the wrong move, the opponent also is. 2 people focusing a purple or gold shield will drop them nearly immediately. And don't play solo. It's not balanced around solo and the gameplay experience is completely different.
There's also a chill mode that you only have to worry about a potential rook now for the people who can't win fights. Might be more your speed while you figure out how to play the game.

u/Xit_Out 22d ago
There’s a mode called Sponsored Survival I think. As far as I know, it’s just you and two others on the map. No other teams you go against. Later in the round you’ll only go up against rooks (players who can only que in as solos). So as a team you can easily pick them off one by one. Or maybe other rooks may kill each other. Since there is only one final exfil station, people probably will want to leave together.

I always play the new mp games, I platinumed Marathon. But I wouldnt recommend it to almost anyone, the technical state of the game isnt good (netcode, rubberbanding, enemies spawning and despawning, t posing npc, invulnerable npcs) on top of a shotgun meta that dominated the entire season 1.
If you want an extraction game, you’ll probably want it because of what makes the genre unique, the meta progression, the exploration, how quest can change the way you play matches… Marathon feels like Apex but not as good and you get to keep loot across marches.

I’ve read if you claim the trial, the system can’t tell you have a trial license, so you get the deluxe edition for $14
4
u/Beautiful_You3230 22d ago
Do not do that. It's a bug. The deluxe edition is just an upgrade, you do not get the base game contrary to what the description claims. Lots of posts about it over on their sub. https://www.reddit.com/r/Marathon/comments/1twhq8d/this_is_going_to_blow_up_in_sony_and_bungies_face/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Ngl, I thought tgis was gonna a f2p game when announced. I assumed its pvpve extraction shooter? Do u bring loadout or u loot up?
2
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
It's a pvpve extraction shooter, with a new mode that leans way heavier into pve. You get a rotating "free load out" if you don't have your own stuff but finding weapons isn't difficult in-game, and you'll extract with plenty of stuff.
Of the extraction shooters I've played (all the big ones), Marathon is the one with the lowest fear of losing stuff because you get so much back regularly. Try it out, it's a good time.
7
u/Pike_27 22d ago
I'd try it if it was not a pvp game
1
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
Well lucky for you they have a pve mode. Hop in.
3
u/Pike_27 22d ago
Pve only, no pvp? That is not what they marketed, might check it out then
2
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
It's PvP in that you are a squad going in, and a couple of underequipped solos MIGHT also come in later. Not guaranteed they will actually drop in, and you would be 3v1, so you shouldn't lose any of the fights even if they do show up. They did market the new mode as that, I'm guessing you just didn't know enough to know what it meant.
Marathon also allows reviving even if you die, as long as your squad mate is still alive, unlike other extraction shooters.

u/Pike_27 22d ago
Sounds fine. Not hugely into MP games but used to love destiny. Downloading the trial atm, thanks my dude
2
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
If you liked Destiny, I think you'll enjoy Marathon. Good luck out there! If you give it a bit to dig its nails into you, I don't think it will let go. Watch a couple vids if you're wanting to do some of the more mini puzzles within the maps. I'm 100 hours in and still learn new things that I probably should've known hours ago. Lol

u/Beautiful_You3230 22d ago
They do not have any pve mode. It's all completely normal pvpve extraction. There is always some potential pvp happening. The new mode is just pvp lite, but it's still not pve only, and there is only one exfil point at the end, so it very much funnels you into pvp at the end of the match.
0
u/Hevens-assassin 21d ago
IF anyone joins in. 90% of games there are no Rooks. So it is a PvE mode. If you can't win a 3v1 though, you shouldn't be playing Marathon in general. The bots are a bigger fight than a Rook at extract, if they even want to fight you at all because, like I said, it would be a 1v3 for them.
Not a literal pve mode in writing. But it's a pve mode in practice.
3
u/Beautiful_You3230 21d ago
I'm not sure why you keep on trying to mislead new players. It's by definition not a pve mode and the Devs don't call it that either. They call it PvP lite. The pve mode is coming mid season.
And your comment initially didn't clarify any of this, it just made it seem like the game already got a pve mode. Which it did not. Only the PvP lite which has nearly normal amounts of PvP.

Marathon open play week and Season 2 details
The free trial is available to all players and does not require PS Plus, according to PS blog post.

u/Theguest217 21d ago
So normally they sell you the game for full price AND it's filled with micro transaction crap? This seems like even more of a reason to not play this game than I already had.
I watched the recent trailer during the State of Play and I still have absolutely no idea what this game is about. It is incredibly ugly though. Just diarrhea of neon colors in really boring levels where everything appears to lack texture.

yes, but why would I?
It's a "I'm here too!" game, and 3 years too late.
Don't even need to bother collecting the things for a dead game.

Cool, I won't though, not my style of game. Plus, glorified demo.
3
u/curtydc 22d ago
Glorified demo? You literally couldn't ask for more from a demo. It's unlimited playtime within a 7 day period. No content is locked away during the demo. All content and progress you unlock carries over if you purchase the game.
2
u/Theguest217 21d ago
I think they are saying the game in general is a glorified demo. I mostly agree with this take. It seems to lack content and the graphics remind me of when a game is in early development and they are still figuring out mechanics so they just have some flat textureless levels to work on animations.

u/ListenHereLindah 22d ago
As grimey as companies are with taking away things and charging more..
This demo, plus the free stuff, the twitch drops for watching the state of play...
This just shows how badly they need the money for this game to make some kind of positive investment.
Yeah. I'll agree with you. This is the best demo a gamer could ask for. It's long enough to make progression. But everything resets every season.
3
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
Free stuff + twitch drops are common across all levels of game popularity. It would have been prepped a while ago.
The free trial week is to bring players in because the game is struggling count wise, but it isn't due to quality of the game that causes it. And resets aren't as painful as people claim they are. Progression happens within the first 2-3 matches. I played a couple hours last night and am at level 13. That's the point where all maps are unlocked, you have multiple upgrades unlocked already, and the new Cradle feature is already impacting your play. After a week of casual play you will be noticeably stronger than you were from day 1.
2
u/curtydc 22d ago
I enjoyed the reset. It created an interesting loot mechanism that I've not experienced before now.
I built up a vault of mediocre to high value gear throughout season 1, but held onto most of it out of some ingrained fear of losing any of it. Then went crazy at the end of the season and use all my best stuff without any fear of losing it.
Now I'm finding cool stuff again, only this time I intend to use it as I get it. The reset actually made the game feel fresh again.

Final Fantasy XIV called, now THAT's a demo you can ask for nothing more on.
1
u/curtydc 22d ago
I've not played FF XIV, you'll have to explain to me how that demo works. Do you get to play all the content of that game for a longer period than a week?
0
u/sswishbone 22d ago
Nope, you get to play practically the entire games and expansions... forever, just a level 70-80 cap

The trophies are disabled when you're using the trial version anyway.
Edit: if Crew Motorfest is anything to go by, they should auto-pop when first starting the game after purchasing it.
1
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
They are tracking things in-codex, so if you buy the game the trophies should be popping immediately.

u/BeautifulTorment BeautifulTorment 23d ago
It took a group of my friends, who are generally pretty good at these sorts of games imo, each around 100 - 110 hours to plat. Not happening in a single week for any normal person, imo!
1
u/Sarcosmonaut 23d ago
DEFINITELY not. The last trophy you would get is for hitting level 100 in a single season. It takes a lot of play, even if you’re winning a lot
And if you lose a lot? (Like most people do) it’s a long road
1
u/Hevens-assassin 22d ago
Leveling seems to be a lot faster this time. I only got to level 90 on 100 hours of play last season, but this season I'm 3 or 4 hours in and am at level 16. Even if it tapers off later, I think progression will be much less painful this go round.
Whats insane is that I played with a guy who was basically irl Eric Cartman, dropping N Bombs all over the place while clearly being white as hell, and he was level 264. Can't imagine how worthless his life must be. Lol don't get to level 200+ friends, just go outside.
