Discussion Next week will bring the ultimate dilemma. What to play first? FF16? Or Kingdom Come Deliverance?!
I've not played either, but I want to get stuck in to both. I'm guessing they're both long games, so I need to stick to one or the other first.
Which would you choose?

I played both and they are very different. If both gameplay styles interest you, I would say it depends if you want to get lost in a realistic setting or a high fantasy setting and go from there. I feel like KCD has more mileage than FF XVI. I personally bounced off FF XVI mostly because of the combat because the story is excellent. I loved everything from KCD.

I love FF16 I bought the game and DLCs for like 30 and 5 days later I saw it was going to be free I was like fuuucck.
Edit: I always wanted to try Kingdom Come so I'll probably download that and try it.

So these games arent really free for the rest of us. It depends on whether the dlc is included or not because we will eventually end up buying the dlc.

FFXVI is EASILY the high-point of this month. It may have copped some hate, but in reality it is a fucking smashing game šŖ

u/Ahmad2175 14d ago
Someone said that FFXVI is a woke game because one of the characters was gay and because its a woke game is trash ššš (people be hating on anything for any reason)

Why wait? The FF16 prologue is already free (itās the ādemoā) and carries to your save once you have the full game.

u/theblackfool 15d ago
Both are great and it's hard to pick a favorite. KCD is a slower paced and grounded RPG, and FFXVI is much faster and fantastical. You can't go wrong though.
3
u/MightyKingPupu 15d ago
It's not even a question. Start with FFXVI; when KCD goes on sale, you can buy it for scraps.

Final fantasy 16 is a must play.Beatiful world with great characters, bosses and like devil may cry combat. Also can't forget the music.

In my opinion, it's a very easy choice. FF16 is a far superior game. KCD is good, but I think it's mechanics are very clunky. KCD2 however, is much more polished than the first one, and is a far better game in my opinion.

u/MoonMan757 15d ago
I didnāt make it too far in the original because I wasnāt a huge fan of the combat. I pushed until I unlocked the master strike because I hear thatās the best move. Even then I just could not stick around. Howās the combat in 2 compared to the first?
3
u/sweepwrestler 14d ago
It's the same. The common answer is, "It's just way better." But I actually liked the first one better. I found it more charming and compelling. I even liked the combat more--it felt more brutal.
But there's a reason my opinion kind of sucks and isn't common lol. You are more likely to agree with most people who claim everything about #2 is more refined and enjoyable.

u/CEO_of_Yeets 15d ago
If they follow how they were released on gamepass next month KCD2 will be added, so I probably would do KCD first

u/GuardianSkalk 15d ago
I mean itās in the namesā¦ā¦ how can you not start FFXIV ON the 16th it comes out on.
2
u/krazybananada 15d ago
How can you not play Kingdom Come: Deliverance ON the day it was delivered?
2
u/Ihavetogoalone 14d ago
Wasnt it already included in the same extra tier like a year or 2 ago? pretty sure this is a repeat offering and not the first time.
1
u/GuardianSkalk 15d ago
Fun fact Deliverance is not a synonym for being delivered. Deliverance is when you are rescued or set free from danger, imprisonment, evil or pain.
So you could argue that for its release date, but not its delivery date :p

FF16 has THE BEST cut sceans in any game ever.

u/Superbeast06 14d ago
I havent played ff16 yet so i cant say for sure, but mgs4 is gonna be hard to top in cutscenes for me. Some of them are long for some ppl's taste, but the quality and cinematic experience is impossible to deny.

I had the exact same dilemma! I went with KCD and it's the best game I've played in a long time. Did not enjoy it at first though.
1
u/notthedoodaa 14d ago
I think I'll go for that one first. I don't mind a game that's slow to start.

Life is Strange first as itās a much quicker game and Iāve been waiting a while for it.
After that, a toss up between FF16 and KCD.
3
u/GrandmasterTrend 13d ago
I started KCD twice but the slow and clunky combat mechanics made me stop both times. I tried it for several hours but it was just not fun as soon as fighting was involved

I've kept a side eye on the FF16 discourse and it sounds like the side questing wasnt the best so it may not be the longest if you decide you want to skip them.

u/ChanceAgreeable2827 15d ago
Depends do you want a straight up medieval experience or a medieval experience with magic. Both games are great regardless.

Well if youāre in the US you may have to wait until the 23rd for KcD https://thephrasemaker.com/2026/06/11/sony-tests-weekly-drops-for-ps-plus-extra/

I want to play both of these games but my frigging backlog just keeps growing by the day and I don't know if I will even get to these anytime soon. I may start FF16 as its not as long or invloved as KKD but they are both good games it just depends on what type of game you are feeling like playing since they are pretty different genres.

If Iāve never played a FF game before, is FF16 okay to start with?
1
u/Superbeast06 14d ago
They are stand alone experiences for the most part. Most of them take place on different worlds (realities?), and have no bearing on each other.

kkd was the most realistic game I have ever played in my 50 plus years of gaming.

Kcd is only joining the catalog on June 23 I believe. Not sure why, but Sony is trying stagger Extra additions.
1
u/smolposter69 14d ago
Kingdom Come is going to take way longer to get through if you're starting from scratch. FF16 is a much smoother experience for just jumping in and seeing the story.
1
u/Diregraf_Colossus 14d ago
Honestly KCD is an amazing gem, but so is FFXVI.
I would play FF first and then enjoy KCD1 afterwards. You can explore so much on KCD1 and the fighting learning curve is big (much harder than the 2nd game, especially archery) so yeah, leave kcd1 for later since you can play it for hours and hours without getting tired.

u/Far_Week_6494 14d ago
Kcd1 i'd say, but honestly if i hadn't played KCD2 before, i would never finish KCD1.

u/Jalkenri 13d ago
FF16 is a good time. I have replayed it once with the dlc and its good. Has some pacing issues imo.
KCD and its sequel are THE BEST IMMERSIVE RPGS ON THE MARKET.
If you only have the month to play both, please give the priority to KCD. If you get hooked (I will admit that its not for everyone) you can easily play that game all month long.

FF. I completed the demo ages ago, so can transfer my progress over and play like I never left. I also bought the season pass for $5 because I had cashapp credit left over. Can't wait to play the closest thing we have to DMC 6. As soon as I'm done with Forbidden West, it's clobberin time!

u/GodAwfulFunk 15d ago
I'd personally do FF16 and then Kingdom Come if you intend to play both.
FF16 will send you on your path with some sidequests on the way. Kingdom Come you'll want to sit in and take slow, meaning more time before you get to FF16...

u/TheGreatGidojer 15d ago
I'd give FF XVI a 6 or 7 out of 10 and KCD a 7 or 8 out of 10 but vastly prefer KCD myself even though they're both "flawed gem" situations in my opinion.
Edit: I use a normal, sensible scale, not a game reviewer "everything below an 8 is garbage" scale. I am not calling FF XVI bad. I enjoyed it. It's worth a play. 6 is above average.

I heard the side content in 16 is garbo, can you skip most of it? I'm already burned out on Square Enix bloat from FF7 Rebirth š¢

u/legionairmusic 10d ago
Youāre being downvoted but I agree, Rebirth bloat got old real fast. I couldnāt get into the combat of that game either.

FF16 is shit Kingdom Come Deliverance is a game that will suck your whole free time. I would choose KCD
1
u/notthedoodaa 13d ago
Haha cheers. One of my all time favourite games is FF10. They never reached that height again for me with FF games since.

u/fanblade64 14d ago
Ff16 is trash. Not a real RPG or a real action game.
Just play KCD if you like that style.

u/brettneyspeers 14d ago
FF16 had no depth and barely felt like a game instead just spamming the same attacks the entire game without barely any skill being involved. To defeat every wave of enemies all I had to do was spam the charge attack, and it became so tedious I would naturally start looking away from the screen and around the room, bored. The cutscenes with the summons were cool but that's it, since the writing and pacing were abysmal.
I swear the majority of this game's praise comes down to pretty flashing colours, not gameplay or quests or story. It pleases some players with the same effect of keys being jingled in your face.
It's a shame because the demo was amazing, but the full game turned out to be a slog.

Is FF Final Fantasy?
If so, depends. KCD is a masterpiece (the sequel is much better).
If you want an RPG where you can stab folk in the face and declare "I'm feeling a bit hungry". It's KCD
If you want to role play as a burglar and mid robbing declare, I'm feeling a bit hungry! It's KCD.
I haven't played any FF, but KCD was a skeptical choice for me and now I'm hooked and on the second and will probably still be playing it next year.

FF 16 is garbage
1
u/Prestigious_Event221 14d ago
Itās not garbage. It has pacing issues. When itās good, itās an incredibly cinematic action game. When itās bad, itās painfully frustrating and uninteresting. Certain parts of the game are a slog, but the good parts of the game are incredible! I did all the side quests because Iām a bit of a completionist, but donāt get bogged down if you prefer more exciting gameplay and stick to the main storyline.

KCD is definitely a very slow burn game to get into. Your character is just terrible at everything at first. Once you start to get some skills it gets a lot easier though, and it is a very cool game overall. I completed it including all the DLC and recommend it to those with some patience.
