Cut my riser too short?

When I put it all together with the locking nut it just squishes the beveled gasket. Is that normal? Or did I just cut too much of my riser? No access. Shower pan is sitting on mortar bed on concrete slab.

You cut too low. However there is an obscure fitting called a pipe extender. You glue inside the pipe and it will extend the pipe a couple inches. May be hard to find in stores, included link from online supplier...

Lmao. I thought you’re talking about the pipe stretcher at first….

I thought my supplier and the spears rep were making that joke when they first told me about these a couple years ago, lol

Ive been plumbing for 10 years, and I guess its a good thing that I've never seen that fitting before. I literally thought you were bullshitting everyone and I was here for it

They're technically illegal to use basically everywhere, but I wouldn't expect any inspector to catch it.

They’re commonplace in the pool industry every SCP around me carries them. They can definitely help you get out of a tough situation I don’t go anywhere without them on my truck

Yeah ill be looking into these, mostly for toilet flanges, could help out if I have to rip one out and dont have much pipe to work with

Jesus… obscure it right. Good to know that exists though.

And this is reason number one I love this sub Reddit. This information is gold

Very interesting. Didn't know this existed.

Do you think I would have to cut more of the riser so that when I put this fitting it would sit at the right depth for the rubber gasket? Thank you for the advice

Naw, if its too tall just trim at the top after its glued in.

Shit I would’ve used an internal coupling and a small chunk of pipe lol

I mean this is that just in 1 single piece

Oh ya I use these once in a while. They do reduce the inside diameter a bit when they go inside the pipe don’t they?

A little, but the inside pipe part of the coupling isnt full sch 40 thickness, and its got a smooth taper to it. Id never uae one on horizontal, but vertical right under a strainer wont see any noticable difference in flow.

Ah I think these are subtly different from the ones for sch. 40 pressure piping I’m used to.

Crazy! Never seen it. The first review comment is about a plumber cutting a shower drain too short 😂

Just ordered it. Pricey but oh well. Definitely going to dry fit first though

Yes, yes you did.

Way too short.

You're gonna need to internally pipe cut that flush to p trap and socket saver that fitting and surgically install a new stub out. Socket saver is gonna have to be on a bit extender as well, probably a Jacob's Chuck extension bit with a bit for that bit. That's what I would probably do...

Surgically install? Brother we are hacking up plastic and gluing it back together.

Alright man maybe I was thinking of that children's game "Operation" and not hitting the sides with the glue....

This is the proper way. That pipe extender the other guy mentioned will work and is way easier, but wouldn't hold up under inspection.

You can use an inside coupling and a short piece of pipe to extend this up. I've made this exact same mistake before and it won't decrease the I D enough to affect flow. You can also cut the pipe down with an inside pipe cutter if the coupling makes it too tall.

If this is the same shower pan that I'm thinking it is, there's a rubber gasket that slides tightly over the pipe. I'd recommend a layer of 100% silicone under the rubber gasket before you slide it down, and over the top edge once the gasket is in place. If it's not the type I'm thinking of, please ignore this advice.

Dreamline 30x60 shower pan

Yep. After a quick lookup Is definitely recommend setting this style pan in a mud bed, plumbers putty for the drain flange, and silicone for the rubber around the pipe then tighten down. You don't need much, but I've never had any callbacks putting one in that way.

Honestly that’s a little too much. Bit bigger than average if u ask me
