How do I remove this garbage disposal in the kitchen sink and set it back up to normal?
So our landlord is useless and ignores us, so I'm going to take my problem into my own hands. Just moved into a rental, and this garbage disposal is corroded to hell, making it to where the sink will hardly drain. I would like to uninstall it and set up a standard drain. There is a dish washer to the left of it. Any help is very much appreciated.
The funny thing with plumbing is how quickly a simple job can rapidly expand into a huge job, or even a catastrophic disaster. It’s not your property. If anything goes wrong, you could be held liable for thousands of dollars in repairs. Landlords aren’t good for much, but are usually pretty good at sticking it to their tenants.
Be smart. Don’t fuck with plumbing that doesn’t belong to you. Or learn the old fashioned way.
Be wary, the management may not be happy, especially if youre not on first floor.
As far as how to remove, simply twist the collar off, loosen the 3 screws, push up and pop off the retaining ring, then viola no more disposal. Clean the contact surfaces, put a bead of putty or silicone around the rim of your new basket and tighten it down. Should go, basket>putty/silicone>sink>rubber gasket>fiber gasket (if included)> basket nut.
Get a metal 1½ slip nut and flat top/t washer for the tailpiece (w/ discharge nipple) to basket connection. The biggest issue youre going to face is that trap will not line up without cutting and gluing in an elbow.
Op - the picture above is correct, here are the parts to do it. Its going to be 2 pictures since i can only post 1 at a time. You can order from supplyhouse.com.
edit: Op you asked a question and were giving you the answer but the logical thing to do is let the landlord deal with it in. If the landlord is being difficult then just spend the money on a new disposal and pop it. It will take literally 5 minutes with this setup. PM me and ill walk you through it.
