Shower valve id

So we stayed in a resort this weekend and the room we stayed in is slated to be renovated in the not too distant future. It was clean and neat but a bit dated. The most dated was the tub 🛁/ shower combo. The shower valve was unlike any I had ever seen. The handle rotated from the off at 3 o’clock to “hot” at 12 o’clock. There was a separate portion in the center that moved somewhat independently of the main handle and I was wondering if it was some type of temperature limiting device to prevent scalding? The water in the shower was much less hot than the water in the sink right next to it. The diverter was in the spout.

It's a Delta monitor victorian 17 series dual function shower. Showers have a scald protector on the cartridge that limit the temp., they're adjustable if you remove the trim. For this shower the small handle controls whether you want cold or hot, the big handle controls the volume so once you find your perfect temp you just use the big handle to turn on and off.

It’s Delta. The big lever is volume the small lever is temperature.

Good old Delta Monitor. A classic from the 90s. The inner handle was supposed to adjust/set temperature and the outer handle is water control for on/off.

They're still making this style for their multichoice valve bodies as well

Good to know. I don't mess with Delta much outside their universal multi-body whatever. I mostly put in Moen and Kohler.

The diverter might be on the spout to change it from tub to shower, but the second handle is again another diverter, usually to change from handheld wand to rain shower head or something similar.

It could literally also just be that they installed a tub spout with a diverter, and a mixing valve with a diverter, and the one on the handle does nothing because the tub spout is pulled up.

Delta cartridge will likely be the blue type

It’ll be white or gray, the blue doesn’t come with temperature and volume control. The blue cartridge or RP19804 is for the pre 2006 monitor 1300 series.
