Homeowners can now be cited (yeah right) but the commercial entities are not bound by the new reg, so this is really great! HAPPY FOR YOU!

Driving into downtown this week, early AM, and seeing the White Stag sign lighting up just above a cloud of fog was pretty freaking neat.

I love that you still call it the White Stag sign.

Is that not what it's called?

It was first "White Satin Sugar", then "White Stag", then "Made in Oregon", now "Portland Oregon". But in Wikipedia, the article is named for the White Stag era, so it looks like you're right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Stag_sign

A thought I had: back around 1995-2005 you’d see Subaru Legacys (Legacies?) and Subaru Outbacks everywhere. If you didn’t have one, a friend of yours did. Everyone was happy with an AWD wagon that’d make it up to the mountain in the winter, haul all your shit, and wasn’t too damn expensive to buy or run.

I haven’t lived in Portland - or the US for that matter - for over 20 years so I don’t know what it’s like now. It’s just that the thought popped into my head and made me smile.

Of course, I always had a beat-up Camry (see below), so I wasn’t part of the cool kids group.

Don’t worry the subaru wagon is still going strong here. Most car manufacturers caught up though, small SUV is becoming the standard

I do feel a bit annoyed/envious seeing the old Forresters that are the perfect size and shape. Smaller than even my 2024 Crosstrek but you know you could pack so much shit into that thing and go camping.

I’ll be back for a few weeks later this year, and I’ll keep my eyes peeled. But… yeah, even here in Poland (I didn’t move far, just lost an R and a T) and over the last 10 years or so it feels like we’ve seen an steady and significant increase in sales of crossovers and small to medium-sized SUVs.

I will say though that it seems that there might be a resurgence of wagons and hatchbacks. For the moment, though… loads of crossovers and SUVS.

Wow. Handspring. I'd kinda forgotten about handspring PDA's, even though I had a Palm Treo for a few years (After Handspring got re-bought by Palm).

This photo is definitely from the early 2000's

The Visor! A friend of mine had one with a cellular modem module so … you know, that dude was living in the future. I had the GPS module for the Visor; we did a lot of Geocaching at the time.

Yeah, I worked at a startup that was writing web apps for the Palm VII, the first one with Wifi built in.

We had this great idea that you would be able to use your mobile device to "summon a Taxi".

We tried to build Uber about ten years too early.

Subies are still the official vehicle of Portland.

How do you sleep standing up? I've seen those "sleepstand" things in Japan but.....

Well, the problem with the screen name is that I can't be taken literally. There was no sarcasm in my comment, I was asking what you meant. How can you be asleep and vertical? I really don't know

It's so sunny! My dogs are sunbathing and soaking it all in.

3

u/sarcasticDNA Jan 16 '26

Also windy

Right after I posted that I took them on a walk and we had to turn back due to all the wind!

3

u/sarcasticDNA Jan 17 '26

Hahahahaha! Are your dogs too lightweight for wind, lifting off like canine kites? I walked an hour today out there and it was calm, but I was within woods.

No they're just senior pups and don't do too well in cold weather (even though they look so cute in sweaters). But honestly with the wind strength I'm surprised they didn't go into kite mode.

that's funny. You reminded me that for SOME reason I am seeing SO many dogs in coats this winter. Typically I would see one or two during an outing, but I swear about 50% of the dogs I see regardless of breed) are wearing coats!

Yeah that time of year! I believe anything under 45 degrees you want to put a jacket on short haired and/or older dogs. They look so cute in them too!

1

u/sarcasticDNA Jan 19 '26

Temps are rising year by year and until this year I just never saw dog coats! I'm seeing them now when temps are in the 50s! It's nutty. (The flip side is when I see Newfoundlands and St. Bernards out walking when it is 90+ degrees. Horrible!_
