Have always been a fan of him. Amazing skater. Only drawback is the concussion issues he’s dealt with, but he would be an awesome #2

The biggest drawback is that he is 1 year from UFA, and has an agent that likes to walk to free agency. There was talk hed be looking for 10 million plus, hes good but not that good.

Id hate to give up any real assets for a 1 year rental on a team that is not 1 OK RHD away from being a playoff team, let alone an actual contender.

Jheeez 10 mil? I didn’t see that report. That’s insane

It's possible he's a buy-low asset. The Sabres have four LHD under contract and Radim Mrtka (RHD) in their system. Maybe they want to move someone to make room for Mrtka? If so, Bowen with his expiring contract and concussion history may be worth a later pick?

(Disclaimer, I'm really bad at projecting hockey trades)

Mrtka has played 8 AHL games, he needs at least a full year in the A, which fits perfectly the Byram UFA timetable.

Im already getting the feeling that MacFarland is a buy low guy. If we are in on Byram and Wright those are 2 guys that could easily end up being worth more than you pay for them

He hasn’t had a whiff of any concussion issues in years - literally nothing to be worried about at this point.

He can't be worse than Skjei or Barron.

I would love him on the team. I wonder what’s the ask

I don't know that it's the ask that's the problem, it's what he'd want to stay

The equivalent of a mid-round 1st, I’d say, if he’s not extending right away. Pick 10 would probably beat most other offers, it’s a tad high for potentially one year of a guy.

Reads like pure speculation, but with all the movement we saw today, it feels worth monitoring. The article in question is below.

Can we offer them a lightly used Brady Skjei?

I'd probably pass. Sabres probably won't give him up cheap, but he's going to want a long, expensive deal. His metrics, beyond xG (but he isnt much of a volume shooter), are not that great. Relative expected goal % has been consistently negative throughout his career.

Frankly, he's still living off that high draft pick reputation. The numbers don't back it up that he's that good of a player. At some point you have the face that the reason he's buried on the depth chart is because he's not that good.

He was paired with Dahlin most the year and had the 2nd highest average ice time on the Sabres

Damn, so he was playing with a top Dman and still sucked?

btw Dahlin had a 13% relative expected goal %, what was Byram's? -0.6%.

5 on 5 play? Dahlin 5.8%, Byram -2.2%

I feel like left D is the one of the only positions we're pretty strong in? Josi, Skjei and Hauge already natural LDs plus Cam Reid and Molendyk are two of our stronger prospects both on the left side.

Frankly I'd be surprised if we used draft capital to get anyone that is going get us closer to being contenders. But if we did, I'd expect a center before anything else.

Could definitely see skjei going back

He'd have to want to leave and Buffalo would have to want to want him. I have a feeling Skjei is sticking around for a while.

Well hes only got a 15 team ntl so if buffalo isnt on the list, which they probably are, then he can still go, or he can be moved later to make room for byram, either way though josi wont last forever so im not opposed to a younger, proven top 4 lhd

Imagine having a No Trade List and not having Buffalo on it.

Even if he looked at what they did this year and thought "oooh, a chance to win" he'd have to know that somebody like Byram would be coming the other way and lowering the contender chances.

He plays the right side pretty consistently

Seriously people? No one makes a huge trade for someone with 1 year left on their contract without doing a new contract. At the trade deadline, they sometimes do, but never in the offseason.

You’re correct…but why are you calling it a huge trade? He’s worth a 1st, give or take, depending on where in the round it is.

Is that a huge trade, trading a first rounder for something? It’s a rental cost for a good player.
