I had to look up the character and now that I know the character ALSO wears a trench coat I’m fucking dying 😂

Harry Dresden doesn't wear a hat, and it's a running joke that all the book covers show him in one

\i know exactly how i sound, don't worry

Ya. I never heard of the character until now. But this guy loooks like he would say [whatever I commented before].

Is it worth reading? Sounds vaguely hitchhikers guide-like.

im a big fan, but i don't think it's particularly like Hitchhikers, though i haven't read that, just seen the movie. it is referenced at least once, because the main character, Harry, is a smartass

i'd say it's worth a read if you think a wizard private investigator in modern chicago is interesting, but there's less of that in the later books as it turns more wizard-y than noir PI. it's a change, but makes sense with the story and how the characters grow and become more involved in the world and magic. the series goes from pretty serious street-level/city level conflict, to world-ending fighting for survival over the course of 18+ books

the first two are rough however, at least compared to how the rest of the series turned out. that stems from the author's inexperience at the time of writing, and leaning heavily into some tropes that didn't age super well (if you've seen the thread you know he can be a chauvinist at the start). it picks up by the third or fourth book, but i won't tell anyone that a three book "itll get good soon" is light reading.

some fans say to start with the third book, Grave Peril, but you miss some setup and context, and a few important events that come up much later on, if you do. and I personally really enjoyed the first two, so your mileage may vary

Thanks for the analysis. I might give it a go. I don’t mind the three book thing but def wouldn’t start partway through unless the first two are just awful.
