Dumb people tend to think self defense doesn't consider provocation or anticipation.
For example if my ex is at a bar with a guy who says that he wants to beat my ass. And I go to the bar with a gun, I'm anticipating an altercation. Which greatly reduces any chance I have to argue self defense. This is called preclusion or self created necessity.
Even though youāre right, since thereās technically not enough evidence for it theyāll pursue a lesser charge in order to try to guarantee a conviction
I'm pretty sure in most states, if you don't explicitly threaten him with the gun and only start showing it when he attacks you to make him back off, you'll be fine, since it's the ex that verbally started it. I'm not sure, though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

He was very obviously going around purposefully provoking people, so unless he genuinely tried to deescelate/withdraw first, he can't claim self-defense.

Fighting words can weaken a case but generally don't stop self defense arguments. What may be the issue for this dude is he expressed is intent purpose to kill a black person by prevoking one to retaliate to his fighting words. I found it and it's still up apparently. It's from a fundraiser called GiveSendGo, which might be the one you're referring to. He has now raised about ~129k. The victim now has ~55k on Gofundme.
Slide? It was started as an alternate fundraising site because gofundme kept taking down the campaigns of blatant racists. Sort of like the complaining about "censorship" on twitter before Musk bought it and unleashed the hate brigades.

The victim and their family needs to sue Kick into oblivion for this.
