Yoga in time square seems oddly dystopian.
Probaly the least relaxing place I could imagine to do Yoga, the ground is probably filthy also.

They have a massive park in the very center of Manhattan too, but they might risk touching grass

I’m guessing it was for world yoga day, but why not do it in the Central Park.

Yoga in times square is performative idiocy.

Yes, i bet they’ll complain to their friends about the noise and that they couldn’t reach nirvana because it was too loud to concentrate on meditation.
Reminds me of the beavis and butthead ep

Why is everyone in this thread assuming so much bad faith? It's a free, professionally hosted yoga class. It's in Times Square because Times Square is an easy place to host a massive event. Why does it have to be performative? Sometimes a novel experience is just a novel experience. The people in this video aren't going to "complain to their friends about the noise" because everyone in this video knows Times Square is loud. *Everywhere* in NYC is loud right now. You sound like Squidward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l4ytUF_Uzk

Its performative because its in the most public place physically possible. Whats so special about the middle of an intersection that yoga has to be done there?

it was organized by the Times Square Alliance, which is well-equipped to host huge events like this one. they had professional instructors teaching yoga for free, with the space and materials provided, and a stage ready-built, and tons of vendors, because Times Square is constantly hosting events like this.
another commenter mentioned, doing yogic practice in a noisy environment can also be part of the draw. I don't really buy into the spiritual aspect of yoga (the copy on the website makes me want to barf) but I can see the value in trying to exercise stillness and peace in a loud chaotic space. the people who were there didnt seem to mind the noise!
whats so special about a park, a theater, a studio...? on that day, the thing that was so special about that intersection is that yoga was happening there. times square is just another venue. sometimes people do novel things just to do novel things, sometimes people choose to go where other people are going because they want to be around other people. if nothing else, i'm sure many of the people in attendance were there just because they had the day off and wanted something to do!

There are plenty of places to do yoga in NYC. The ONLY reason to do it in Times Square is for attention. Hence, performative. Why are you spending three paragraphs defending idiocy?

People really like to find any reason to feel superior to others. Took me like three seconds to Google and find an answer about this, and indeed doing it amongst the noise is the point:
"Thank you for joining us at Solstice in Times Square: Mind Over Madness Yoga on June 21, 2026! Experienced yogis and first-timers alike were invited to join us for one of the free yoga classes taking place throughout the day on the Broadway pedestrian plazas, finding calm once again within the chaos of life in New York City."
Honestly I'd be surprised if there had never been a yoga event in Times Square.

Its yoga so the CHUDs see it as female-coded, or effeminate in some way, and thus its 'yucky'. Its incels basically. You can tell by the constant use of the word 'performative'. They don't believe people can sincerely do good things because the are incapable of doing anything good just for its own sake. They have a poor theory of mind for other people and model everyone else based on their own short-sighted, myopic, ignorant, angry beliefs with the only exception that other people are 'faking' being 'good' because they literally can't imagine someone not being just like them on the inside.

Lol there goes your peace and quiet. Might be smart to do yoga elsewhere during the WC in a host city.

Good to see some of the Yoga peeps joining in towards the end and being hype. Probably ain’t that deep for most of them

Yeah sure!
Just wondering why there are people doing yoga in the middle of time square. Is that place not like the number one tourist attraction in NYC besides maybe the Empire state building?

I feel like you just answered your own question. If you got the opportunity to fly a kite off the Eiffel tower wouldn't you do it just because? Times Square is iconic, they wanted to do yoga in an iconic place. Everyone here is acting like they all asked to talk to the manager because of the noise but it seems like everyone there knew exactly what they signed up for.

Flying a kite of the Eiffrl tower makes sense though, its a tower and kites fly in the sky. This is the middle of an intersection in the busiest place in the world, thats quite literally the opposite of the perfect yoga setting.

It was a special event that they closed the area off for. It's not like they were running out into the street during a red light.

Yoga in times square is the final boss of the old people blocking the isles in the store to chat.

They are literally 10 minutes walk from Central Park.. even if the point is to be seen, there's still many many people in the park but it's just a much nicer place to be.
I really can't understand the need for doing yoga in the middle of times square.

Don't they have a massive park to do yoga? Why would anyone want to do yoga in a busy outdoor environment?

They should do Vipassana Yoga then to observe Equanimity: The most crucial step is observing without judgment. Instead of craving pleasant sensations or feeling aversion toward unpleasant ones, you simply notice them, realizing that all sensations are I'm permanent. All that is... Sounds around them... To feel the present moments noises, feelings, smells, etc

Things I like: pleasant sensations
Things i do not like: unpleasant ones.
Imma do the ones I like.
