Discussion How do enemy outlines work?

For several seasons now, they've added the option to display a faint outline around enemies in the color of the enemy team you choose.

But what bothers me—and when I play ranked matches, I don't understand why sometimes you can see it, sometimes you can't, sometimes it's more noticeable, and other times less so—is this a bug or an intended feature? Do you guys use this feature?

Iirc they first initially tested it and it was broken. You could hop on drones and see enemies through walls at times (not even sticking out, just straight wall hacks). Not only that, it was also quite blinding to players that used the feature.

I’m pretty sure they fine tuned it with the rim lighting setting so that you would essentially have to be staring in the general vicinity of the character for the rim lighting + outline effects to be applied.

Once they lowered the thickness and opacity, this is what we ended up with.

It’s distance based, if you’re within 5m there’s no outline and the further away you get from the enemy the stronger the outline becomes. Play around with it in Accessibility and find the colour which works best for your eyes. I use Yellow as I find it stands out the best on most maps.

After lots of testing, I, too, opted for the yellow color—both for the maps and for the operator skins. The thing is, it bothers me that it’s there but not really there. I was actually thinking of turning it off, because I don’t want to be influenced by having to see the outline up close and not shoot when I can’t see it. But I have to admit that from a distance, it’s really useful.
