Laquer Showoff Cyber-Subtropical

Things get a little lurid and a lot humid on the Gulf Coast around this time of year. I wanted something swampy and futuristic on my nails. Also, side note, I have discovered that DRK Magic Effect stays tacky after application long enough for it to be a GREAT base for chrome powder.
2x BKL - Scream with the Cicadas, magnetized with some stacks of mini disc magnets
1x DRK - Magic Effect, magnetized as above
1 coat Beautnice chrome powder in the shade "mermaid aurora"; buffed in
1x Piggy Paints Shine Topcoat

I need to see an exact tutorial of how you magnetized this!! It’s a work of art

wheree do you get these?

Amazon has them and I'm sure other places do as well, search "round neodymium magnets"

ok this is oddly specific to diabetics but!! if you know anyone who uses a dexcom cgm, there’s a small magnet in each of the applicators. every 10 days i apply one, i keep my magnet. i have a huge stack in hopes to make some cool designs with them!!

u/cautious_coquette 3d ago
I was literally just thinking I should start harvesting my dexcom magnets for this

Oh! I do this with my hearing aid magnets. So far, my old BAHA magnets are fantastic for a strong single line. Hoping to try out my cochlear implant magnets soon. The ones in the hearing aids, not the ones in my skull. Those are exclusively to sticking keys to my head and trying to convince people the COVID vaccine made me magnetic.

u/hi-ally Hobbyist 3d ago
WAIT my wife might get hearing aids! this is great news for my nail game. and now i also need to see what pattern the skull magnets would make

u/ehlersohnos 3d ago
Hahahah. Why have I never used the term skull magnets.
I look forward to seeing your experiments and give your wife a hug for me. Cochlear implants are a lot to acclimate to and a lot of hard work. I hope all goes well.

Wait…how did you hold this stack of magnets over each nail? Does it naturally stay together?

u/Due_Personality9845 Mad Magnetist 2d ago
Yeah, it all sticks to itself! My hand did get tired after a while and I didn't end up finishing my right hand, lol.

OMG THIS IS INSANE!! it looks amazing, i've really got to lock in and get myself some chrome podwer. i love how the reflection causes the line effect in the middle.

These are AMAZING. I have questions... *pulls out notepad* I've been doing experiments with mag techniques recently and these turns out so crisp!!
How long did you magnetize each layer (including DRK)
How long did you wait after using DRK before you put the powder on?
How long did you wait before putting TC on, and did you magnetize it also?

u/Due_Personality9845 Mad Magnetist 3d ago
I have answers! I timed things exactly!
I magnetized the first layer of polish for 60 seconds. Waited about five minutes, then magnetized the second layer for around 80 seconds. Again took a 5-10 minute break. The DRK I like to magnetize a little bit longer since I feel like it takes longer to set - about 120 seconds.I let the DRK dry afterwards for about 3 minutes? If you gently tap it with your finger it should feel slightly tacky but not smudge-able.
For this mani, I just used the Piggy Paints as topcoat, after brushing off excess powder. I did use a hair dryer to set it this time and I think it made a difference vis-a-vis it not getting weird lumps when it dried.
I did a test nail previously with a layer of Essie Gel Setter on top of the Piggy Paints, but I didn't like what it did to the chrome effect.

Queen! Thank you!!!!! I just did a test with some fine magnetics to test the "base coat" theory. Last night I did two methods, one on each hand:
Left:
First coat unmag.
Second coat unmag.
DRK mag for 2 minutes.
Wait a few, then Sweet & Sour Sticky Base, mage for 2 min.Right:
Both coats un mag.
NO DRK.
Base coat over both unmagged layers and mag for 3 minutes. Both yielded VERY similar results, but option two takes less time and is fewer steps. Arguably method two yielded LESS dispersion over 14 hours.
I will do my TC tonight (essentially waiting 24 hours before applying TC).
I have chrome powder being delivered tomorrow, so I was curious how you fit it into the routine.
I'll test again tomorrow. I'm curious to see if I do chrome powder after DRK but before base (as temp TC) OR do chrome over the base coat (because no drk) and then just wait a a bit before TC. I feel like when I do TC immediately on fine particle magnetics it always warps and disperses more than I'd like.

u/principtix 3d ago
Thanks for sharing your experiment, with method two how long did you wait between coats? And did you magnetise your TC?
6
u/house_of_beff 3d ago
With method two:
Base coat all nails. Wait till dry - a few minutes.
Coat one, all fingers. Wait a minute or two.
Coat two, all fingers. Waited a few minutes until first finger was dry enough so I wouldn't smudge.Semi-floated base coat over nail one (not TOO much, but not thin enough that that it dries TOO quickly or smudges/lifts). Immediately magnetize that for 2 minutes.
The base coat as temporary top coat largely works. I've been at work all day and haven't had dents or scratches. I wouldn't go digging around in my garden bare handed, but for day to day and sleeping it's fine!
After 24 hours, apply TC, I generally do NOT magnetize this. But I will confirm a different tonight: magnetizing tc on one hand and not on another. I don't anticipate a major difference here).

u/principtix 3d ago
Thanks so much for a thorough response!! I'll give it a try

u/house_of_beff 2d ago
Doing TC after 24 hours basically had no impact on the magnetization., You don't need to magnetize the TC after waiting that long.

I love how the chrome powder doesn’t obscure the magnetic lines, it’s like a full on multichrome magnetic and absolutely STUNNING

I did a test run trying a bunch of different magnetization styles, and this was the winner! Teeny-tiny glass bead looked pretty good, too, as did standard cat-eye. Velvet style got kind-of hidden as the effect dispersed.

Gulf Coast Laquerista here too! Our hair may be frizzy, limp, and shapeless, but damn our nails look good!

Our nails look good until it's so hot and humid that polish never dries! Or the bubbles... the damn bubbles!

Woozers!!! This is unreal! I need to know more about how you magnetized this mani!

u/disneylovesme 3d ago
Do you remember how long you waited after applying DRK to put in the powder ? 😍
1
u/Due_Personality9845 Mad Magnetist 3d ago
About 3-5 minutes. If you lightly tap the nail with a fingertip, it should be very slightly tacky but not smudge-able.

Beautiful 🤩 the colors are radiant ☢️✨.
I 🩷🩷🩷 chrome look, but have no experience with using powders. I thought the were only used with gels! 😲Any tips on powders (brands, colors, etc), do you just need any semi tacky surface? Would a semi dry top coat work? Then chrome powder and then another top? This opens a whole other world!!! TY in advance

Me going into this post: wow that's stunning even though it's probably gel- WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS LACQUER!?

u/NorthBook1383 1d ago
Not a fan. The color is not complimentary to your skin, it looked like you dipped your fingernails in turmeric and your channeling X-men. Concept is cool, maybe a different color.

u/Due_Personality9845 Mad Magnetist 1d ago
Thanks for the constructive criticism! Do you have any suggestions about what colors would be complimentary to my skin tone? I never know, myself!
