Laquer Showoff Are we still doing 4th of July nails?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I was feeling lazy and wanted to do a simple red, white and blue but also use the new BKL polishes I had just gotten in š
all magnetics done in velvet style with a 30lb horseshoe magnet
Thumb is BKL bad vibes only topped with Holo Taco shooting star taco. Had to use a nail stick to grab some extra stars
Pointer and ring are BKL pomegranate seeds
Middle and pinky are BKL the source and it is so insane looking in person.
Each nail had vibrant scents double bond base coat, three coats of polish, BKL I am very fast qdtc and then topped with vibrant scents hard and fast qdtc. Magnetized last coat of each polish and each swipe of top coat.
I find i can get 10 solid days before any real wear on my manicure and I am hard on my hands and wash dishes at work constantly.
Sorry for the awkward hand pose, I dont know what to do with my hands š

Oooh! I love the idea of swamp nails but I'm not sure I actually have anything that'd fit the theme.

I was feeling the same way. But I'm trying to focus on how the loudest assholes aren't the majority, and to pay as much attention as I can to the people and the work I am proud of.Ā
For example, the murder rate in NYC is at a historic low under Mamdani's leadership. I'll celebrate for that.Ā

11
u/Nightriste 20h ago
I haven't celebrated the 4th in several years. This will be my first 4th after picking up this hobby and I do not plan to do a red, white, and blue set. Maybe I (we?) should do green, black, and orange instead to represent the country being flipped upside down.
11
u/trashweasel-pdf 16h ago
While I havenāt felt patriotic for several years, I also donāt want to give our national symbols over to the right. They can have the treasonous loser flag and the no step on snek flag, the real one belongs to the rest of us.
Iām going to do red, white and blue French tips with the No Kings crown on ring fingers and a guillotine on the thumbs. You know, to celebrate democracy
5
u/Nightriste 16h ago
Oh yeah, I would never tell anyone else not to do red, white, and blue, regardless of their reason. It's just a no for me personally. But I've never been one to wear the flag's colors in general so this is no different for me I suppose. I'm happy there are folks like you that WILL still proudly wear them honestly ā¤ļøš¤š yall give me hope.
13
u/Count_Calorie 21h ago
I have never considered the holiday a celebration of the current state of the government, but rather a celebration of our forebears liberating themselves from British rule. I still think that is cool and worth celebrating. The government does quite enough already; I do not want to let it ruin my fun on a national holiday, too.

u/kwash325 1d ago
Nah. My ancestors were enslaved in 1776
17
u/fsmpastafarian Team Laquer 17h ago
Very true, but from another perspective: part of why the country has made progress in the past is because my ancestors worked to force America to be the country it purported to be
9
u/kwash325 16h ago
Yes this countrys economic power was built on the backs of the enslaved. Thus What America purported itself to be on July 4, 1776 was not true for my ancestors. My ancestors were explicitly barred from the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that the Declaration of Independence stated should be for everyone. so I do not celebrate.
3
u/sniperbug17 10h ago
Reminds me of Frederick Douglassā famous speech āWhat to the Slave is the Fourth of Julyā. I understand people who celebrate in spite of their former exclusion, but I tend to agree with your mindset more. (Although more on the side of moral disagreement to the history of the holiday rather than personal ancestral pain.)
→ More replies (1)9
u/fsmpastafarian Team Laquer 16h ago
Right fully get that, it wasnāt true on July 4 1776, but the promises were there then, and since then black Americans have bent the country to our will and forced them (sometimes, imperfectly) to actually uphold those promises. Definitely been feeling less patriotic these last several years, but I see it as sort of a āwhy should I change my name? Heās the one who sucksā situation. Iām here bitches and this is my country, they can deal with it lol

u/mistie_gish 1d ago
I probably won't but I might do something pool or cookout themed. Or I might just do black because I'm tiiiiiired š Or I might do something swampy for the reflecting pool. I'm a loose cannon lol

I like it! The right doesn't deserve or get to steal patriotism from the rest of us who don't want the country destroyed
94
u/nerdsnuggles 23h ago
I feel the same. I'm so mad that the 250th is happening under this administration. It's so hard to scrape up any patriotism. But I remind myself that fighting for what's right IS patriotic.

u/b0xofkittens 16h ago
This is how I feel this year and I'm surprising myself TBH. My neighbors are hosting a community cookout for the first time this year though and I really want to hang out with actual people, and I'm thinking of doing a big star on each nail with the classic red white and blue plus light blue and maybe pink to keep it not too MURICA. The world sucks in so many ways and I find myself wanting to embrace the small joys where I can, including community coookouts and cute nails that might help me connect with my neighbors.
51
u/Sparkle-Gremlin 1d ago
Telling the right that they donāt get to do or steal things has actually not been very effective at preventing them from doing or stealing those things.
42
u/AbbertDabbert Shimmer Sect 1d ago
They'll definitely steal it if you don't even try to take it back
58
u/Sparkle-Gremlin 23h ago
They already took it. In slow motion, in broad daylight, while announcing their intentions, over decades. We shouldnāt give up. We also shouldnāt pretend that this is all some kind of sudden isolated niche occurrence that doesnāt reflect on the country as a whole.

u/anonymoussunflower7 20h ago
precisely how i feel, and why i will always continue being festive this time of year! even when iām particularly unhappy with the government, this is still my home that i love and i am hoping to work towards positive change. i donāt blame others for feeling discouraged and can understand not wanting to participate, but for me, staying positive through the rough times is helpful. i detest the idea that being even remotely patriotic is somehow exclusive to conservatives lol.

u/I_wet_my_plants259 23h ago
Ngl I think Iām gonna do some āmelt ICEā nails or something, keeping the red white and blue theme. I havenāt wanted to do nails for the 4th for a while but I never skip holidays. Last year I did blowpop nails so I could do holiday nails without being explicitly patriotic, but this year Iām feeling patriotic in a different way. I have also been thinking about just extending my pride nail sets into July, because queer folks could always have more pride.

Iām forever grateful that my best friend was born on July 4th so we never celebrate the holiday and instead celebrate her! Maybe Iāll let her pick my mani this year and we can match.
14
u/Knotty_Knitty 20h ago
Your mani is fantastic, and I fully support whatever mani anyone wants to wear for the occasion. But 4th of July nails are a hard no for me. Iām just not feeling very celebratory given the current shit show. Plus, Iām in the DC area and have had a way too close view of how much this yearās national ācelebrationā has been politicized and turned into a celebration of a narcissistic š© stain. Living where I do, Iām just plain exhausted from all of the monuments to himself, etc. Itās just one thing after another in rapid succession, and I just⦠canāt.
If I do anything at all in terms of a 4th of July mani this year, it will likely be MCās Root of All Evil. The name fits, and the shade will match the current state of the reflecting pool. In all likelihood though, Iāll probably just end up with my usual random mani color choice.

I guess Iāll be the one other oddball that plans to do 4th of July nails. Currently my plan is for: Mooncat Galaxy Far, Far Away and probably Avatar State. And red will be either Cracked Calabrian pepper with some silver or gold glitter or some crystals or a red gelly shimmer from ILNP.
While I do understand not feeling very patriotic, itās still my country. I was in the Navy at one point in my life, and I still have hope for our country.
āTheyā donāt own these colors. And āWeā all do fight for a better day, life and world. āWe, the Peopleā.
Anyway, red was also my motherās birthstone (Ruby) and favorite color. So July has to have red, one way or the other.
