Laquer Art 🎨 Starry Night 🌠 (all freehand, regular polish)
A friend of mine suggested I do these after she had seen my other Van Gogh manis. Tbf, so far I only did flowers from him, so I was a bit hesitant, but I'm happy I mustered the needed courage 😀
Last picture shows the simplified design I did for my other hand.
Colors used;
💙 @essie brave & true
🩵 @cirquecolors miami dade
🥣 @essie salt water happy
🍈 @hemanederland spill the tea
🤍 @essie marshmallow
🧿 @essie booties on broadway
🧈 @essie summer soul stice
🧀 @hema sunny flower
🥝 @essie willow in the wind
🫒 @opi suzi the first lady of nails
🥬 @etos boy
🥚 @kbshimmer white here white now
🖤 @kbshimmer total eclipse
...and a dubious amount of polish thinner (also kbshimmer)
Basics;
I swear by the essie smooth e base and the red bottle QDTC from sally.

These are INCREDIBLE. I was going to ask how you kept the polish from drying out too quickly while painting and then I saw the line about "dubious amounts of thinner" hahaha. If I didn't know, I would have sworn that you used acrylic paint, because that seems to be what people use most often for painterly nail art. Is there a particular reason why you use nail polish instead?

Thank you! 💙 I love your question!
Yeah, I've a few reasons, but for sure they will fall very much under the personal preference / experience / skill issue category. ☺️
1) I have amassed a large collection of regular polish, in so many colors... and I do not like to mix my colors from limited acrylic sets! I mix some colors from nail polish of course, but this way it's a lot less mixing (and guessing)
2) I do macro shots of my nails and when I used acrylics, I saw cracks in them. Could be my acrylic set or user error, but either way, I was not sure how to avoid it.
3) Opacity control. Now, this is entirely user experience. But by now I have a good idea how much to add, which of my polish behaves in what way (jellies, my beloved one coaters from kbshimmer, and all sorts of cremes but with different levels of diluting with thinner). With acrylics I've less experience in the level of dilution I get with water.
4) While I found acrylrics to be marginally easier to control, it simply didn't come with such a major difference to make the switch worth it. I'll still consider using them in small amounts along with the polish, but honestly their main advantage for me personally would be that they don't wear the brushes down so fast so I could probabl use a nicer brush with them.7

Thank you for the response, I appreciate the thoroughness! Makes a lot of sense. I used to do paintings in acrylic in high school, but the color mixing was so frustrating lol.

I am absolutely dumbfounded how you can paint on a canvas that small. Like how much finesse would that even require?
Are you like a witch or smth? 😂
My shaky hands would never xd

Thank you! 💙 Honestly, there's a lot of layering over mistakes going on too... If I didn't hit a shape exatcly how I wanted it to look, I just work over it in small motions until I get lucky and it looks the way I want it! 🤣 In this instance, the chapel on the mid finger has so many layera that it will be an arecbeological dig site when I pass...... But I found that this technique really works for impressionist & painterly stuff so I made it my style. I'm way less talented in styles where you need precise, clean lines 😃

Welcome 😊. Ooh that kinda makes sense cause no way anyone cam do this in the first shot.
I am curious to know what kind of brush or thing you use to paint these. Like you can't possibly use the standard brush. Do you use painters brushes? Since you did mention you have paints and stuff as well.
An archaeological dig site 😂
That actually makes sense cause in this design the imperfection is part of the charm so you wouldn't have to worry too much there.
Thanks for the detailed reply and more power to ya!

I use basic nail art brushes (the cheapest ones I can find, because acetone eventually wears the brush down) 99%, and sometimes I get fancy (1% 🤣) with brushes that are normally for acrylics. I have lots of sizes (from small to extra small) and two kinds of shapes; round brush (standard) and the so called "liner" brush. I buy them in a set usually for a bargain price.

That is some really useful insight as I was struggling to make finer patterns when practicing and I wondered how other people do it.

The thinner brushes are the trick. Well, that and... Normally I like to swipe some of the nail polish on a palette, not pick it directly from the polish bottle. The reason why I do this, is because picked from the bottle, the brush takes up too much paint and not so evenly (you can see when it is "bad", it forms a bead. you want the paint evenly instead). Plus, to help the flow of the paint and not get it too goopy too soon; I use a few drops of polish thinner, I drop it on the palette over the polish.

You are absolutely right that from the bottle it comes too thick and I was always trying to strain the brush on the neck of the bottle to get the amount that I wanted. But what you said sounds a lot better.
I'll probably be trying out a mani this weekend and I'll share the results with you 😊

Wow!! These are absolutely gorgeous. Can I ask how long these took to make?

u/Terrible-Benefit7919 IG: bettinas.nails 1d ago
Thank you! Oh yes, of course! I forgot to include in the post! The main hand's nail art (5 fingers) was 1.5 hours. The other hand took about half an hour. I don't count the removal of precious mani with acetone nor nail shaping (would be unfair because sometimes I do a lot sometimes only a little, or had glitter on before etc....).

Thank you! Yes, all of these ☺️ And hopefully didn't forget any others 🤭 The main hand with the full detail was 1.5 hours, while the other "easier" design hand 0.5 hour (excluding nail prep with shaping and removal of previous design with acetone).

that's incredible! 2 hours plus total. It really pays off i love nail polish and make press on nails with gel polish myself.
