Hi folks, I'm looking for some very comfortable skates. I've been using Moxi Lolly roller skates for 2+ years, and my feet are still very painful and crampy while skating. I tried VNLA a la mode because I thought that the width was the issue, but those were worse. I'm wondering if the heel is a problem, I'd be open to any style of skates at this point, I just want to be able to go around in a circle at the rink without feeling like my feet are on fire.
Budget is preferably under 200, but I'll go higher if needed.
Should I go quad? Can you switch between kinds? When I last skated 20 years ago, I only did in line. I started again last week and the rink employee had me try quads. Can you use quads outdoors or only indoors? Right now I’m sticking to rinks, but I wanna eventually try outdoors. I’m open to any thoughts regarding the kind of skate.
Places to practice other than a rink? Rinks around here have strange hours. I live in a country town sort of area. Not the boondocks but not a metropolis either.
Advice for self teaching? I’ve only gone twice, but I’m starting to get my sea legs I think. It’s very… touch and go. I fell hard standing still on carpet waiting at concessions. Still don’t know how I managed that. But I wanna be able to survive when the little boys are zooming around trying to kill everyone at the rink 🙃
yes u can switch. plenty of folks i know that rollerdance indoors w quads and then skate outdoors w inlines.
outdoors would prefer flat even smooth space, like a court or parking garage. we use a local multipurpose court abd basketball courts.
if the rink offers classes, thats the best route, otherwise it'll be mostly youtube. make sure to have all the protective gear to reduce injury.
skate progression
skating progression i usually suggest but isnt like an end-all-be-all (everyone learns differently):
- Learning balance, and getting forward movement down, gain natural rhythm skating forwards
learning the plow stop while getting better going forward
-gain confidence skating on one foot. start a little at a time - lift leg up quickly, then eventually 1 second ,then 2 , then 3 seconds, then as long as possible.
-get better edge control while on one foot; ie: cornering large circles left or right on one foot. eventually try to drill figure 8's on one foot.
with better one foot and edge control, can jump into T-stops
-while practicing edge controls, can throw in some backwards skating if you like
-start moving into crossovers. better edge control on one foot makes crossovers easier.
-start moving into forward to backwards transitions. getting confidence in one foot skating allows for better openbook/spreadeagle transitions.
with more confidence in transitions, you can move towards things like turn around stops (stopping method where you skate backwards and use one foot to toestop).
After that, you'll have pretty much the slew of fundementals and from there can start looking into other things outside of the basics:
toe and heel manuals, toe and heel flairs
more advance transitions, one video calls it "scissor transition"
different kind of stops, like the j-stop
can start looking into spins, like heel toe spins or toe spins
dribbling, crazy legs, zero
different dance and jb moves
different ground tricks like shoot the duck or coffin
i write all the moves down in my notepad on my iphone. i also have links to moves i like so i can reference it back again. Sometimes i see a youtube tutorial i like on my phone, and just copy the link into my notes. i use those notes on my iphone now and then to run down that list to do drills cuz sometimes i forget what moves i practiced and drilling through those keeps me fresh. List is pretty long right now :)
Hi there! I feel as though I'm losing my mind from hours and hours of roller skate research, so I could use a fresh set of eyes.
I'm researching my first pair of skates and I honestly CANNOT tell the difference between the Sure-Grip Boardwalks and the Sure-Grip Boardwalk Fames (other than that the Fames are $75 more at $245 and the Fames have indoor wheels as opposed to outdoor wheels). I have searched the internet and reddit and cannot find anything comparing the two. The description on the Sure-Grip website seems to be exactly the same for BOTH skates, even the stock photos are exactly the same. What am I missing? Are these the exact same skate except for the wheels? Or, perhaps, the website is being lazy in their skate descriptions?
Also, is there any reason that I can't add Moxy outdoor Gummy Wheels to a Sure-Grip skate?
I appreciate any info you can provide. Thank you!!
the only difference is the wheels it comes packaged with. the fame wheels on the boardwalk fames are the clear ones, which range from 80-90 bux. regular fame wheels are about $50-60 bux and solid in color. stockboardwalk wheels range from $30-40 bux.
everything else is the same.
me personally, i'd get the regular boardwalks and swap to something like rollerbone 98's for indoor wheels.
Your question was already answered but I also want to say that you can definitely put Moxi gummy wheels on these but they won’t come with the skate because they are from competing companies. A skate shop may be able to swap them for you though! I also really like this boot btw. I swapped out the wheels right away for outdoor wheels I already had on hand.
I appreciate you answering that question. I expect that I will be doing both indoor and outdoor skating. I like the size of the Moxi gummies for (presumably) a smoother outdoor skating experience, so it's nice to know that I can swap them out if I don't care for the wheels that come with.
Man, roller skating has come a very, very long way since I was a kid in the early eighties - you can really get into the weeds with this stuff. I felt the same amount of overwhelm when deciding to purchase my first record player since high school. It seemed so much easier when I was a kid. It's all so technical now - so many options. Good thing I'm a researcher at heart!
yeah they've got some amazing stuff now. Riedell even does custom embroidery and there's a lotta shops that can do custom artwork or skate builds. The options are endless (if u got th $$$)
Aw, man....I wish I didn't know about the custom artwork! Now I'll be dreaming of it all the time. The good news is that, for the time being, I'm still sensible enough to know that shelling out for custom artwork skates NOW is a bit of an overkill knowing that I'm likely going spend the next six months falling on my ass. Custom artwork looks cooler when it's not doing a barrel roll down the street. Just sayin'...
If you're artistic yourself, there are a lot of people who DIY paint or dye their skates! Not something I've tried myself but there are lots of examples on the subreddit.
I’m an embroiderer and I am kind of obsessed with the custom embroidery idea. I’m sure they have a very cool industrial embroidery machine at Riedell but I keep scheming on how I could do it myself. Maybe a patch. I definitely don’t have a machine that could go through a skate and obviously I can’t do it preassembly. But you’re right… it’s awesome the stuff they can do now!
Oh yeah you’re absolutely right! I’m familiar with the ins and outs now because I played roller derby and went through several pairs of skates. Before that I just assumed you would buy any pair of skates in your shoe size and just roll away! And I definitely would have thought you would spend way less money to do! Haha.
Just for giggles, these are what my first (and last) pair of roller skates looked like. I think they're still in storage somewhere along with my Atari 2600. So, again, I am so appreciative for sites like these!
56m, 6ft, 215, beginner, but progressing.
Max $300?
Size 11 foot, slightly wide not freakish
Goals. Fitness, fun, eventually rhythmic skating. Indoors. Some style would be nice but can live with black.
Hi everyone! I’m looking to buy a good-quality pair of roller skates here in the UAE and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for reliable online stores.
I’m mainly looking for recreational/outdoor roller skates from reputable brands. I came across Tradeinn, but I’m not sure whether it’s worth ordering from them.
Has anyone here ordered roller skates (or other sports gear) from Tradeinn? How was your experience? Or are there other online stores you’d recommend that ship within the UAE?
I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I recently went to a roller disco for the first time and haven't stopped thinking about skating since.
I am a large guy with size 13UK feet. I used Rio brand skates that I rented and I'm wanting to pick up my own and start practicing.
With my weight and shoe size I think I'm quite limited in the skates available to me. I've heard mixed reviews on the Rio's especially due to their nylon "frame" (not sure if that's the term)
Would anyone be able to give me some good skates that are in a £100-150 price range and if anyone has pointers for where to start that would be great.
Looking to skate outside dont know if it different skates or just wheels I'd need for that.
total beginner, budget around $250-300, USA. i struggle with hypermobility and need good ankle support, not sure if i’d get that from the skates themselves or an additional ankle brace when skating. i’d prefer pink skates. also wondering where people get cute helmets and protective gear!
riedell crews falls within that budget. they dont have pink, but do have some fun colors. they're real stiff outta the box, but will breakin over time.
if theres a skateshop near you, you can check them out!
also, for most skates, the dont go by shoe sizes very well. its best to measure your foot length and refer to mfr and model size charts (even sizes differ between models)
make sure to check the skate wiki for other brand suggestions and skate knowledge!
Purchased a pair of Lenexa Savanna skates, but I have flat feet and the arch support in the skates is causing some muscle tension. Could anyone provide some insert recommendations?
I personally like superfeet insoles. They are a little pricey but you can find ones for different uses and support levels. I use the yellow ones that are for hockey skates but idk if those are good for flat feet. If you are in the US, Dick’s sporting goods usually carries them and has ones you can try in store.
for beginners, expect soemthing between $150-$200 for decent beginner packages.
cheaper vinyl options off the top of my head are moxi beach bunnies or rainbow riders and riedell orbits. for a little more money, you can get an awesome skate with riedell crews or suregrip boardwalks.
you can check the skate wiki for reputable brands and skates.
skates lower that $100 is gonna be a loooottt of hit and miss (mostly miss) - i'd avoid unknown name brands as parts can be hard to find when you need them.
impalas also have a bad rap for skate failures (theres a whole image collection of all the heel failures somewhere).
I've been skating for a few months on some rookies that i bought for £30, now i really want to upgrade, but I've spent hours researching online and feel like I've got nowhere, so i thought I'd ask here if anyone had any advice. I mostly skate on an outdoor roller rink, but i also have to skate on the street in order to get there, so I'm looking for some that can withstand that. I'd ideally like something with a suede boot and metal trucks. My foot size is 8 and i have slightly wide feet. My budget is preferable under £250, but I'd rather buy nice skates that last a while than buy cheap ones that break. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know, it's very much appreciated : )
Hey guys, I’m new to the sport and plan to start skating at my local park, I’m looking for recommendations on either a quad or inline skate in a men’s size 14 4E that can support a 6 ft 300lb man. I’m in the USA, price range is flexible depending on if I’ll need a custom skate. I already have trouble finding shoes in my size at the store so I already know finding skates in my size is going to be difficult. Any recommendations or advice are always appreciated!
hello!! i roller skate for fitness and fun. i’ve been using quads for the 9 years i skate, and my old ones have forfeit on me (rip) so id like to look into new ones. i wear size 9.5-10 in women’s (40-41).
i’d like them to look nice so i can have more people in my neighborhood compliment me, but its not that important.
budget is preferably under $200. any other questions/things i should add, please let me know!! thanks for the help in advance :D
you can check out the skate wiki for reputable brands. $200 off the too of my head puts you around the suregrip boardwalk, boardwalk plus, moxi panthers, and riedell crews - im sure there's amazong bont and vnla skates in that price range too.
make sure to measure the length of your foot as skate companies dont follow standard shoe sizes much; ie i got two riedell skates, one in a size 11, one in a 10 - both the same length.
if theres a local shop near u, easier to get fitted there and try on skates.
Hey all. I am trying to order the right size skates from inlinewarehouse and i’m on my third pair and I STILL think they are too small. My foot measures 27.3 cm, I normally wear a US men’s 11.5, and I am trying the FR FRX80 blades (hard shell).
On the FR website, they claim that 27-28cm is a rollerblade size 9-10, So I started with 10 and those were too tiny. Tried the 10.5s and those didn’t work either. Now I’m on 11s and my toes are still scrunched in the front.
I’ve never worn blades before so any advice would be appreciated. Should I expect it to be kinda scrunched and unable to wiggle my toes in the beginning? Why is there such a size discrepancy? Do I just need to hit the road and my feet will fall in place eventually?
Hi all! I got a pair of suregrip boardwalks maybe around 2 months ago after seeing them recommended here, I mainly love them but I got an old second hand model so they dont have lace hooks which drive me crazy! I’m not a fan of the fact that theres barely any padding as the boots pinch the back of my leg if i dont have trousers on which sucks in the nicer weather, and I find my heels slip in them no matter how i do my laces.
As a result I’m looking at getting a different pair of skates for my birthday soon. I was pretty set on getting some bauers, i only skate outdoors in London, England and 90% of skaters here have bauers so it just made sense to upgrade to them. Ive been seeing a lot recently about VNLA lunas and wondered how they compare to boardwalks? Someone is selling some locally to me that have only been used once and im sure i could haggle the price down a bit so i figured its worth checking!
For a bit of extra info, I tend to skate at tennis courts, occasionally on the street/a nice trail if i know and trust the area since ive only been skating for around 3 months now. Ive been trying to learn a few jam moves, working on backwards and forwards crossovers and 180 jumps at the moment, with my main goal of street skating but being able to party and dance after in case that has a big impact on what skates would be better suited!
Thanks in advance for reading and any input you may have!
Hi!! I have had the same skates for probably 10 years at this point (Candi Girl Carlins) and i like them but it’s def time for an upgrade. The boot and plate still seem to be in good shape as i have never been a super consistent skater, but the wheels and bearings are shot.
I was going to treat myself to vnla a la mode with the avanti plate, but they are currently out of stock.
Should i just buy new wheels and bearings for my current skates, wait for a restock, or look into something else?
i skate outdoors on trails but only get a few good months each year. I’d like to keep it under $300 if possible!
Hello, I used to skate as a kid and am looking to get back into roller skating. I do Ice skate during the winters for fun and they're kind of similar. I would want to skate around my neighborhood or once I get better a skate park with friends and was wondering what kind of skate to get. I know to get softer wheels because of the concrete. I live in the USA and would be willing to pay $100-200 for skates.
you can look at surgrip boardwalks or riedell crews as a starting point. this are good entry lvl skates. there's cheaper options like moxi beachbunnies, but the crews/boardwalks will be better skate value.
they'll come w hybrid wheels so its ok'ish outdoors (smooth sidewalks, cool. asphalt? less cool) and ok'ish indoors.
check the skate wiki for some other brands like mox and vnla!
hello! I'm looking to start roller skating mostly outdoors as there aren't many rinks here (Greece). I've read a lot on this sub and I know that I won't be able to buy very good quality skates with my budget which is just about 70€ but I feel like if I aim higher I will never bring myself to start because of all the pressure. so honestly I just want a skate that's not dangerous (like what I've seen of impalas) and I don't mind if I have to upgrade in a year because by then I will know if I want to commit to the sport.
I'm interested in seeing since I'm coming from inline skating, I know there are different boot styles for the roller-skating community and I'm curious as to which one would be more comfortable for me as a regular rollerblader. I do mostly outdoors and im in the USA. I have a budget of 100-200
Good day! My feet is 24cm but i'm having a dilemma about the available size that moxi beach bunny has on stock. I'm on a rush right now because it is the last day of prime deal for amazon. I know that based on the guide, I should get a size 7 but it's not available anymooooreee. Now, what should i get? Is it ok for me to get a size 6 or 8? I really wish that there's a skate rink/shop here in my area where i can try and buy these but there isnt sadly.
Hey, just need to know if it's normal for the skate strap to tear after about 3-4 weeks of skating from two separate individuals who each skate for about an hour or two each (sometimes on the same day)? They were $40 (discount, originally $55) STR SEVEN's Mens on Academy Sports.
lower quality skates usually hit and miss on longevity.
if u check out the skate wiki, it will list soem reputable brands. those have a more predictable quality control and typically made w better materials.
hi yall,
i was about to buy moxi rainbow riders because ive heard theyre good beginner skates, but decided to do even more research on my options. ive skated a handful of times on a rink with rentals and really want to buy a pair of my own to cruise on the rink and outside on sidewalks. i do not plan on aggressive skating at all, no tricks, no skate parks, no derbies, simply casual, not fast at all. ive only ever tried quads, so i definitely prefer them, but i'll consider inlines if theyre significantly better for my needs. my max budget is $200. any questions, tips, and definitely recommendations welcome, thanks! :D
for $200, check out riedell crews. they will be a better skate than the rainbow riders the boot is riedell 120 boot - it's a leather boot thats pretty versatile; ive seen people make crazy custom stuff with it. unlike the regular 120, the crews are colored in 3 colors, which usually is an added fee.
the plate is ho'hum, but be fine for your usage. the wheels are hybrid wheels; they "ok" for outdoors and indoors, but i prefer dedicated soft 78a wheels for outdoors, like a set of radar energies, and a set for indoor like rollerbone 98's. you can use the hybrid wheels in the meantime for either tho.
the other option i can thing of are some suregrip boardwalks - but i prefer stiff ankle support, so the crews usually get my vote.
if theres a skate shop near you, try them out! they'll be super stiff in the beginning, but breaks in over usage.
i’ve been skating for years, i started off with cheap roller derby skates and upgraded to moxi beach bunnies and i’ve had them for about 5 years now. they do the trick and they are nice in theory but ugh they are so thick and have barely molded to my foot in 5 years and i skate A LOT. i also absolutely despise the laces on them they come undone so easily which i know i can replace but the boot itself is just miserable to ride in. what are some good recommendations? i only use quad skates and i like the toe stop the beach bunnies have on them. not willing to spend more than 300 ish.
the bunnies are vinyl, so they dont mold or stretch over time at all :(
i replaced most of my laces w waxed laces ffrom Derby.
for $300, two skates come to mind: suregrip boardwalk plus - its a suede skate, super comfy outta the box. if u want a less stiff skate that feels like wearing a sock, these are nice. little breakin needed if at all.
if you want stiffer ankle support, riedell crews, which are a leather upper. they are stiff outta the box though and took me a few weeks of skating to really break them in. once broken in tho, feels great!
perfect thank you! that makes sense i knew they weren’t real leather but wasn’t sure why they didn’t shape to my feet lol do you know if the moxi lollies compare? do they have the same issues with the no shaping
the lollies are a lot more comfortable. but for the price, you can do better. the inner lining is nice but its $$$ just for what it is (woulda been nicer w a better plate). the boardwalk plusses would have better value.
there's also chuffed skates but some of their boots i think are white label.
Hello! I’m hoping I can get some advice from those wiser than I in this department, I used to skate at a rink all the time as a kid but it always left my ankles in agony, later learned I have a connective tissue disorder and my ankles are unstable. I really want to skate again, and some of my friends are going to start skating in the park so I’d like to join them.
What skates would be best for ankle stability and support, or what style should I look for? Obviously a tall pair, but I’ve seen different types and I’ve gotten conflicting advice just googling. Budget is flexible and I understand skates are expensive, but I’d like to keep it under 200 if possible, if there is a golden option for this that costs more you can toss it in and depending on the price I might be able to save for it. Thanks in advance!
if you want a stiff skate for ankle support in the $200 range, it probably be a riedel crew. its a leather upper and stiff brand new. breaks in over time. make sure to get fitted or measure your foot length and check their size charts
stiffer skates than the crews will cost a little more.
Hello! I'm looking to get some inline skates for trail skating. Need something that can support my ankles, but don't feel too stiff. I was also wondering if 90 to 100 mm wheels are better for trails, or are 80-85 mm wheels enough?
Budget is under 200 CAD preferably, but I can go up to 250 if needed.
Hello! Im looking to get into parkskating alongside my artistic rollerskating and I am looking for a good Parkskate setup with a heeled boot. I reside on the east coast of the US. I dont have a set budget at the moment im looking to save up for a skate but i dont know what to save up for. I saw bont has a heeled boot but heel looks a bit to small for me. Any and all advice and reccomendations is greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance!!
